Hinckley United at double to beat Gainsborough Trinity

Two second-half strikes earned Hinckley United a 2-0 home victory over Gainsborough Trinity last night.

The win at the Greene King Stadium should put the Knitters in good heart for Saturday's FA Cup outing.

There were plenty of thrills in Hinckley's goalless draw against Stalybridge Celtic at the weekend and this match started in similar fashion with chances at both ends of the pitch.

Adam Webster went close twice for the Knitters in the early stages. His first opening came when Alex Taylor made a run down the left, crossed and Webster headed over.

Then Webster collected a kick from Hinckley goalkeeper Chris MacKenzie on his instep. He controlled the ball and closed on the target but Gainsborough keeper Philip Barnes advanced off his line to save.

Gainsborough also had chances to break the deadlock.

Luke Beckett broke into the Hinckley area but he put his attempt wide.

Then, following a flick-on by Beckett, Matt Hudson had an opening but he volleyed over.

As the half wore on, the match developed into a midfield battle.

Webster had a good chance soon after the interval.

Neil Cartwright sent in a cross and Webster was unmarked in the six-yard box but he was unable to make contact with the ball with his head.

The Knitters gradually got the upper hand and they gained reward for their pressure on 69 minutes.

Cartwright made a run down the right and crossed into the area where Richard Lavery, on the far post, bundled the ball over the line from six yards out.

The clincher was scored on 80 minutes. A Chukki Eribenne back-heel set Webster free down the right and he crossed for Taylor to strike.

Hinckley are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Rushden & Diamonds in the first round proper of the FA Cup.
