Title: Band's musical skill

jigenbakuda - April 15, 2008 11:05 AM (GMT)
I am not really a musician, barely a vocalist, lol. Well I heard some talk on here about how turkey was the most skilled followed by akko then lastly yuu. How was this determined? What makes turkey awesome? Why is yuu not a good guitarist? I read that she does not really solo or something like that... Vocally she is crazy to me, I love her voice, even sounds good singing enka. Well I know about akko, as my dad plays bass and I know what good bass sounds like.So I know about yuu's voice and I know about akko bass playing skill. But would anyone care to tell me why they think go!go! is good at singing/playing? I am very interested in knowing what others think.

So basically tell me what makes each band member skilled (or unskilled).

Whoever said Yumi was a bad guitarist should be taken out back and shot.

same here.... or would they say we all have a bad taste of music? :P

Well, I really love Yuu's guitar playing. Maybe sometimes it is simple when you compare it with.... Jimi Hendrix or some other guitar legends, but she can really show emotions with her playing and I love this.

who said that? link me!

its not even possible comparing 3 people with 3 different instruments I guess  ... but as favorite member I'd pick Turkey cause he's cool  Yuu is so mysterious but cute and weird -ui- I love it... hmm I don't care about Akko ROFLMAO

Here is what I read, there was something else about the soloing I did not bother to look for, it does not matter if you guys feel that way.

Anyways, I still have not heard your opinions about what makes them good. As I really only admire the compostion ability of the group. I am not a musican so I do not know why people are skilled or not. I just know what I like, and me likey go go.

In my opinion yuu is awesome because she plays stuff I like. Now other guitarist may be more complex... but they do not play what I like. go go's chord progressions are irregular to me, I have never really heard anything like it. The vocals serve as an extra instrument to harmonize with. I really think go go is unique.

Oh yea and I guess I worded the oringinal post wrong, I guess I should of asked why akko and turkey are better than yuu, instead of why is yuu bad.

i dont like to think too much about why are they good cause of their skills or compositions or lyrics or voice .. I just... like them  and I guess this is enough

Ah sokka. You are very correct. Most people like stuff just because, lol. I know I like go go just because, but it is just certain stuff sticks out to me. Certain stuff makes me go "wow never heard that before" I guess that is what I like best about them. They always give me something new and their style is theirown.

All of them are awesome musicians in their own right.

What I like about them, is that they can all stand on their own. They're all a vital to the sound of the band.

Hehe I'm glad the mis-interpretation of what I said was cleared up... I never said Yuu was a bad guitarist!

Even though what I originally said was more of an aside, it seems to have ruffled some feathers so perhaps I should explain what I meant a bit more

I could not agree more with the voiced sentiment that music you like (as opposed to music you admire, which may or may not be one and the same) should come from a feeling that is largely unquantifiable. Like people have said, "you like them just because".

When I made that comment about sometimes (key word: SOMETIMES) thinking that Turkey could play his instrument the best out of his group, it meant just that - play. Not composing or songwriting, but technical playing.

I guess the reason why I figured the "Turkey > Akko > Yuu" scale is twofold. Firstly, and this is purely from personal experience of playing guitar and drums myself, Turkey's stuff is simply a lot harder to replicate than Yuu's. With a few notable exceptions, most of Yuu's parts are based around simple bar chord progressions whereas Turkey's stuff constantly pulls you in different directions and is a lot harder to nail down. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Turkey and Akko play a lot better live than Yuu does. To me, this is a much more accurate test of proficiency Regardless of how "good you are" compared to the other members in a band, whether you can replicate your OWN studio playing live on stage is the real test. Some artists are far better live than they are on record, and that's always a wonderful thing to discover. For me, GO!GO! is a band that was born to be experienced live, because their energy and humour is such an essential part of the appeal and this only really comes alive in concert. So as far as live shows go, Turkey and Akko are technically rock-solid pretty much all the time, whereas Yuu will tend to slip up with the bum notes... but I don't really care because it's part of the charm and she's also got the added burden of having to carry the main vocal lines as well as handle her instrument.

Having said that, if I were to "rank" them in order of demonstrated songwriting ability (something far more rare and valuable than mere technical skill), the order would clearly be reversed :)

I just feel the need to say, before I respond, that I love long insightful posts...

Anyways, that clears up a lot. I do not play guitar, bass, or drums, but I do sing. So I admire yuu's singing ability and her song writing more than anything. As I was listening to go!go! I was trying to find out what made them more unique, I came to the realization that they play a lot of stuff that sounds japanese. Like japanese chord changes and stuff. I felt that no one has mixed japanese chord changes and western instruments as much as go!go!... But to be honest I need to listen to them much more to be certain of this. I have only been a fan for a couple months, not even a year yet, so I need many more listens.

Yuu has a very enka quality to her tone in some songs, and I think it suits her so well. I think she should use her enka voice more often.

My father once told me you can tell how good a drummer is by how many times he "hits" off beat (syncopation), I know turkey does a lot of that. But the disco-esque beat in manatsu no dance hall was my FAVORITE drum beat for a long time, I think I learned it, it was awesome (air drum of course!)

And akko, even if she sucked it would not matter, she is the voice of go!go! she is the vocal one in between songs in lives, and has all the charisma. But she also happens to play the bass quite well (in my ignorant opinion, lol). But it seems as if her bass not only plays the bass, but also plays harmony with yuu's guitar at times. I really enjoy the sound.

To be honest I have not seen enough go!go! lives to comment on their live performance, but I liked what I did see. I think that I should catch go!go! next time they come to america...

I'm not so sure about skill but surely Yuu has a great year for catchy music. And her playing, although it's simple, accentuates whatever she wants to convey in her music

In term of musicianship, she can pull off some awesome stuff much better than more experienced musicians.

Music is not always about complex. Sometimes simplicity (although I don't think Yuu's playing can be categorized as simple) can woo audience just as much as how so-called complex music does.

Anyway, think about it. Yuu has to sing and plays guitar at the same time. And her guitar playing usually includes more technically-challenging stuff than just strumming power chords. Anyone who has tried singing and playing guitar at the same time, especially in an off-beat manner like Yuu, would understand how much effort and skills it takes.

Not to mention, Yuu still manages to reach those incredibly high piitch and bend her voice beautiful to a very fluctuating traditional Oriental tune. I myself has seen a lot of artisits struggle with that sort of singing. It demands a super skill and talent to control the throat and the voicing. Or else, it would sound like a coughing cat.

So by all means, I think Yuu is a great guitarist and vocalist as well.

To compare 3 of them is really a lame idea. It's like saying banana is longer than apple

Sorry for my horrible English
