Title: Winter League Tournament 2008
Description: TEAM TOURNAMENT

James J. London, CDC 900278 - December 22, 2007 09:57 PM (GMT)
Well it is that time of year again!! Time to start the process of setting up for the "League Team Tournament"!!!
Since this is the first time I have tried to do something like this any helpful feedback would be much appreciated.
I am in the process of making up the raffle tickets and I hope to have them ready to put the folders at the beginning of this session. I plan on doing the same things they have done in the past. I will have the captains approach the bar owners and pitch the sale of tickets. Selling points for the captains will be:
1. Increased sales for the bar,
2. Home field advantage for their team.
The set-up will be that all four (4) teams in each division will go to one bar for the first round. The top seed will play the 4th seed and the 2nd seed will play the 3rd seed. The two winners will playoff for the "Division Champion". Possibly the two losers might play-off for 3rd and 4 place. (it depends on sales of tickets and what kind of funds I have to work with on how the payouts will go.)
Some guidelines for ticket sales will be that the bar must have at least two (2) boards for each division they wish to have. So they have 6 boards they could potentially have 3 divisions in the bar. However I will use common sense and if I do not think that the bar can handle that many teams comfortably then I will only allow two divisions for that bar. 3 boards per division may be better anyway with the amount of players in the bar.
The first round matches will take place on the regular league night in week 16. So
if you play on Monday night, your first round match will be on week 16, which should be by my calculations, the week of April 28th, 2008. But I will announce a firm date in a future post.
The following weekend, which may be May 3rd, and 4th, we will hold the finals at a bar to be determined.
There is still a lot to work out and most of it can not be figured until we make up the divisions, but I want people to start thinking about this now and offer any suggestions they might have to make this a most enjoyable process.
There will be 2 types of tickets in the folders.
1. for round 1 and
2. for the Finals,
Make sure you bar owner knows about both tickets and has the opportunity to purchase both. Now for the finals the bar must have at least 6 boards and have room for about 50-75 people comfortable and food would be a plus.
I need some feedback on how much ticket prices should be set at. My initial thoughts are $10-$20 dollars for round 1. Remember that there will be 4 teams in the bar at least for a couple of hours.
For round 2 (finals) I was thinking more in the $25-$50 range because there could be up to 8-10 divisions at the bar.
A couple of initial things is that the seeding will be done after week 7, the halfway point of the season, period.
Another is how do we want to do the Finals? With so few teams in Gold--Silver-=Bronze the finals could be very weird, so to speak. An option might be to put all of the teams in the finals in a hat and have a Team Blind Draw and play-off everyone, to determine a Nightly Champion. Obviously team that has to play the top team in the league in the first round would be very unhappy. However if the two "gold" teams had to play in the first round it could make things very interesting.
I am sure there is a ton of things I am missing here so please post your ideas and helpful suggestions as soon as possible.
cool: cool: biggrin: B) cool: cool:
Thanks for your input

Jon,
I would like to suggest that the "Finals" be played on a Sunday. May 4th if possible the 11th is Mothers Day. Some of us work Saturdays and that has made it impossible to attend previous Tournaments, Bashes or Bonanza's. All of which have typically been held on a Saturday afternoon. As far as "grouping" all divisions into one Blind Draw style tourn. I would have to disagree with it. I'm not going to start a "Gold" level vs. "Bronze" level arguement, there are several of those already in this forum. I just think that there are still plenty of Beginning level players out there that don't need to show up at a tournament and get dejected. It has been a life long struggle for ALL dart leagues not just the CDC to retain their members and having New/Bronze/Blue/Apple/whatever level players get beat in this type of atmosphere would just help push them away from the league. I do remember years ago when the league/club tournaments were held at one location(Statlers downtown, The laser tag whatever building on Tiedeman etc...) on the same day for all the divisions. Each team, within their division, played a play-off style tournament for the Championship, regardless of Mon. Tues. or Thurs. night being their regular night. There were also plenty of Blind Draws for each division and "OPEN" Draws for those, like me, who wanted to "improve" by getting beat down by Gold/Red/Orange level players. It was an oppurtunity to get ALOT of members in one place, for maybe feedback, Email gathering or just some old fashion Dart "FUN", but thats another subject for a different forum topic.

Just trying to help,
Doug

Good Stuff Doug. Thanks for the input. Maybe I could h it at BJ's Diamond mine and have all the Bronze darters show up at 1pm, the silver at 3pm and the gold at 5pm and then have a huge blind draw afterwards. (I'm just spit-balling here)
Then I could lump all of the Bronze divisions together and have a
"BRONZE DIVISION CHAMPION"
"SILVER DIVISION CHAMPION"
AND A "GOLD DIVISION CHAMPION
Let me know what you and anyone else thinks about that idea.

Jon,
I'm not sure of the total number of league/session players but looking at the schedules and totaling up the number of teams for each division and guessing an average of 5 players per team this is what you would be looking at:

Monday

Bronze = 40 people
Silver = 100 people
Gold = 35 people

Tuesday

Bronze = 35 people
Silver = 150 people
Gold = 40 people

Thursday

Bronze = 35 people
Silver/Gold = 40 people

Total = 475 people

Granted several people play on 2 nts. and maybe all 3 nights and not all teams will show up but even if half the people show can BJ's handle 200-250 people? Sure most players will leave after their event leaving/making room for the next divisional players but still you could be looking at 150 to 200 people there at the same time (wouldn't that be a great problem to have?).
I like the larger scale tourneys. I think it's a better atomsphere and it brings out the better darter in most people. The week "16-17" format has teams playing the same teams they've just played 2-3-8-10 weeks earlier and in most cases the same teams/players they've been playing for the past couple of years( see parity scheduling). Wouldn't it be fun to get all (ok some of) the Westside teams (Lakewood Cleveland etc...) the Eastsiders and The teams from the Burbs (Strongsville Parma N Royalton etc..) together and play against someone different for a change?

Keep Spit Balling,

Doug
