Title: 2006 Winter League Tournaments
Description: Playoffs & Finals Game format options

Scott Madis - March 3, 2007 02:41 AM (GMT)
Ultimately, these decisions will be made by your respective League Director; Rick Betler for Monday League and Mark Dodge for Tuesday & Thursday League. However, your feedback is appreciated and will certainly be considered.

It's official, for Monday League:
League Director Rick Betler has determined the tournament game format will be Option 1:
Round #1= Team `01 Best of 7, Round #2= Team`01 Best of 3, Finals=usually Team `01 Best of 5.

Team games suk. I vote for option 2, a mixture of singles, doubles and team games.

QUOTE (Jeff Inman @ Mar 7 2007, 11:06 AM)
Team games suk.  I vote for option 2, a mixture of singles, doubles and team games.

If you are a confident player (for whatever reason), then yes - team games are not going to be popular to you. You prefer to be on your own or with one partner.

However, if you're not a strong (confident) player, and you want your team to win in a single-elimination competition (not a round robin, week after week), then you tend to prefer to have your stronger teammates covering your back. Would you agree?

And if you do agree, then you'll also agree that most players are not "confident" about their game.

When I first adopted the traditional "team" format, it was on the notion that what are now known as the "Winter League Tournaments" were known as the "Team Tournaments". Traditionally played at the end of Winter Leagues. At the end of Fall Leagues, back until the mid-90's, we held "Singles & Doubles Tournaments". Those were eventually discontinued due to lack of participation. The Team Tournaments however, have carried on - in some form. "Team" events are more popular among the average league player when it comes to a tournament setting.

I'm not opposed to change. But there's virtually no support for change of any kind. We certainly didn't get much input here! But thanks for your 2¢ anyway. ;)

Fortunately, it's not a decision that I have to make.

Scott - I disagree 100% with your statement that most players are not confident with their game and therfore would be more comfortable with playing in team games. But that's really besides the point.

We play the entire regular season with format that consists of a mixture of singles, doubles and team games. Why switch to 100% team games for the playoffs? I can't think of any other sport, pro or otherwise, where the format of play is changed so radically once the playoffs start.

The format described in option 2 in the poll above makes more sense to me. Looks like a good percentage of those that have responded so far agree.

I agree with Jeff on the plan 2 option, stick as close to the regular format as possible. As far as being confident in the game is concerned, maybe the format should reflect that in each division during regular season. What if ? bronze, silver, and gold all had different formats. Bronze being geared the most toward team games, silver being geared toward doubles and singles, and gold doesnt really matter because they play 2 of 3 anyhow. Maybe this would push players toward their competitive level and prevent sandbagging.

I agree with Jeff and Dennis. Team game is horrible because it is very hard to get into a rhythm and then that usually doesnt reflect the caliber player that you are, regardless of confidence. It is hard to keep focused and in the match. Plus, there are many people who favors Cricket over '01 (...anyone who knows me knows that isnt me!!!) but the current set up disregards that preference. The only thing I might say for option 2 would be Doubles 01, 2 Sgl Crk, 2 Sgl 01, Doubles Crk, then 2 Sgl Crk, 2 Sgl 01, Team....that way again it is not more heavily weighted on one type of game or another and still very similar to match night......

I am a fairly new darter (2005) and I always thought it was strange to have a tournament with a best of 7 team game which we only played once a week throughout the reg sesaon.

I can see both sides here. 2 years ago we were a new team and had a much better chance at advancing against a better team with a Team format. We play Bronze on Thursday and it seemed to be that we always had a chance to take a team game no matter who we were playing. It is hard to get into the game though since you only go to the line every 8 turns.

However, we are more experienced now and would much prefer playing games which we enjoy the competition and are much more focused.

If it is called a TEAM Tournament, why not use the same format as during the season, but cut out the singles games: i.e. for Thursday you could have 2 D'01, 2 D Ckt and the Team game last for a tiebreaker if need be.

Also, it seems like it makes more sense to have the 1st and 2nd rounds as a best of 3 or 5 then use best of 7 for the finals; just as most Pro Sports do.

I am probably too late in replying to this, but this is my input.
