Title: Merthyr

Salisbury 2-0 Merthyr
SECOND-PLACED Salisbury leapfrogged Merthyr Tydfil to take top spot in the Southern League Premier Division after inflicting the Martyrs' first defeat of the season.
For over an hour there was little to choose between the sides and chances came thick and fast at both ends.
Indeed it was probably Merthyr who created the better opportunities with Salisbury's Kevin Sawyer the busier goalkeeper.
Craig Steins, Garry Shephard and Jason Welsh all had good chances, but were unable to convert.
Paul Sales struck the woodwork for Salisbury and Wayne Turk was only inches away with a stinging, 18-yard drive.
The turning point arrived on 72 minutes with the home side beginning to enjoy the greater share of possession.
Jeff Eckhardt slid in on Craig Davis inside the penalty box and referee Wayne Bull pointed to the spot.
Davis converted and, on 81 minutes, Salisbury doubled their advantage with a swift counter-break.
The lively Davis broke down the right and delivered an inch-perfect cross for striker Robbie Matthews to score.

Martyrs rally to grab last minute point
AFTER coming back from 3-1 down in the final 20 minutes you would be forgiven for thinking that Merthyr would have been satisfied with their reward from Hertfordshire.
But, after creating enough chances to have won not one but three games, the Martyrs were left to dwell upon just how they had not come away with all three points.
Both Craig Steins and Jason Welsh could have had hat-tricks in the first half alone, while Garry Shephard and Jeff Eckhardt also drew saves from the over-worked Cheshunt goalkeeper Martin Peat.
They had to settle for a Welsh strike on 12 minutes which gave Merthyr a precious lead that lasted only two minutes when the home side's Michael Beane curled in a 25-yard free kick.
The Martyrs continued to create - and squander - opportunities and eventually paid the price just past the hour mark.
First Dwayne Clark and then Lloyd Opara gave the home side an unlikely two-goal advantage and the outlook looked bleak for the Welsh side.
But, crucially, they continued to carve out the chances and Welsh gave the Martyrs a glimmer of hope with a low drive 20 minutes from time.
Paul Keddle's second yellow card for a challenge on Lee Allen eleven minutes from time seemed to end Merthyr's hopes of salvaging some reward, but that was not how it proved.
Steins, who had spurned a glut of chances during the afternoon, latched on to a delightful pass from Shephard and fired home from eight yards to rescue a point.

Merthyr target Gascoigne as boss
Welsh minnows Merthyr Tydfil want Paul Gascoigne to be their next manager.
The Southern League Premier Division side say they have started negotiations with the former England star, who was sacked as Kettering boss in December.
Gascoigne was dismissed after 39 days from the Conference side for alleged drinking problems and later arrested for an alleged assault in Liverpool.
Merthyr currently have two caretaker managers in charge after Tim Harris left to manage Gloucester last month.
The Martyrs, who were once managed by former Wales and Juventus great John Charles, have recently slipped down the table after being among the play-off places in the first half of the season.
Promotion would take them to one division below the Nationwide Conference.
Former Newcastle, Tottenham and Lazio midfielder Gascoigne, who won 57 caps for his country, was in charge of Kettering for six league matches - winning two, drawing two and losing two.
The recovering alcoholic was sacked amid drinking claims, but Gascoigne strongly denied the accusations.
He has since had offers of help from the Professional Footballers' Association to get back into football management.
