Title: Cwmbran Town

BlackandAmber - June 14, 2005 11:23 AM (GMT)
AN OFF-THE-FIELD shortage of volunteers is threatening the running of Cwmbran Town.

Crows officials say while the club will be able to field a 16-strong playing squad, they admit to having a serious behind-the-scenes problem.

“Matters have come to a head because besides chairman John Colley, there are only two other people, secretary Ian Greaney and myself, who help run the club,” said treasurer Mike Lewis.

“There are also about half a dozen match-day volunteers, who along with the ball-boys, are invaluable to us at home games.

“But what this club needs is people to come forward to help organise a committee, which would take care of the day-to-day running of the club.

“We need people to organise commercial and fund-raising activities, organise publicity for the club, liaise with local schools and much, much more.

“When we go to clubs such as Rhyl and Carmarthen Town, for example, we see they have a number of committees looking after different things.

“We don’t have anything like that, but should. At the level of football this club is playing at, I can’t believe we managed to get through last season without a significant number of off-the-field helpers.

“Cwmbran is one of the leading clubs in the Welsh Premier League, has a well-run academy and a youth team which won the national imder-19 league last season.

“So I’m appealing to the people of Cwmbran to contact the club to see if you can help.

“Although it would be of great assistance, they need not have any experience or knowledge of how a football club is run.

“We’re just looking for honesty, enthusiasm and a keen sense to help their local community football club.”

Mike Lewis can be contacted at 01633 676570. or 01633 483282.

They probably would get people to help, but unfortutely most of them are busy nicking cars, and dumping them in our posh valley ruining the lovely country side.

Club captain Mike Fowler becomes the second player inside a week to leave Cwmbran Town, opting to drop into English Southern League with Merthyr Tydfil.

Virtually ever-present last season, Fowler played an important holding role in the midfield, and was the club’s second top scorer with 9 goals in all competitions.

24-year-old Mike joins South Wales rivals Merthyr Tydfil who almost won promotion from the Southern League Premier Division to the Conference South last season.

Cwmbran snatch win after late goal flurry

CWMBRAN TOWN opened their Welsh Premier programme with a thrilling victory over Haverfordwest County, all five goals coming in a final 15 frantic minutes.

What looked to be heading for a goal-less stalemate burst into life when Jamie Edwards drove a 35-yard pile-driver past helpless Haverfordwest keeper Lee Kendall.

Three minutes later, the Crows went 2-0 up when Nicky Palmer's miss-hit back-pass put Kendall in trouble and his attempted clearance was blocked by Kaid Mohamed who coolly slotted the ball home.

Wyn Thomas hit back for the visitors direct from a free kick but Mohamed stretched Cwmbran's lead after being set free by Kristian Dimond.

In the dying moments, Thomas benefited from a fumble by home keeper Gareth Wesson to head home what proved to be a mere consolation goal.

Llanelli 0 – 1 Cwmbran Town.

Llanelli started off very positively; with some superb quick football and one touch moves. It is evident that a lot of work is done during training on set pieces, with some excellent movement on corners and free kicks. However, despite a lot of possession during the first 20 minutes, the Cwmbran defence were rock solid and we slowly fought our way back into the contest. There were a few strong challenges with Chris Thomas among the Crows players to be booked. Eventually a total of eight players would end up with yellow cards, apparently being dished out like smarties by an over zealous referee.

The match turned on it's head after 30 mins when Kaid Mohammed picked up on a defensive error on the edge of the box, ran in on goal and, just as we all thought he'd lost control in the six yard box, turned to hit a sweet shot into the bottom corner of the net. At this point we were made aware of how many travelling Crow's there were in the ground! Wonderful to see about 30-40 of our fans had made the trip down.

The second half started in exactly the same manner as the first, with the crows’ defence halting all attacks quite comfortably. To sum up the threat from the Llanelli front line, I think I'm correct in saying that Gareth Wesson didn't have a shot to save all night. As Llanelli pushed forward to seek an equalising goal, the inevitable gaps occurred in their defence, and the Crow's almost caught them on a number of occasions, with only some weak finishing by Hanbury and Dimond saving Llanelli. The strangest sight of the night was the Llanelli keeper venturing into the Cwmbran box for a corner...with 10 minutes remaining!!!!! But when the Reds had a corner in the last minute he stayed in his own penalty area?!

Kaid had a wonderful opportunity to seal the game with 5 minutes remaining when he was put clear with just the keeper to beat. A wonderfully controlled lob over the keepers head sent him clear, but the ball wouldn't drop quickly enough, and with some strong pressure from a Llanelli defender the ball was put into the side netting from the corner of the 6 yard box.

In summary, this was one of the most committed performances by a Crows side I have seen for quite a while. An outstanding performance from the boys who battled for every ball and worked as a solid unit (even commented on by the Llanelli supporters!) Llanelli are a very quick, skilful team and have some talented footballers. The influx of the Spanish contingent has meant that there is plenty of flare in their play. But this also begs the question...how will they react to trips up to Caersws and TNS in the long winter months, playing on heavy muddy pitches, -2c with the rain /sleet / snow doing it's worst? Time will tell. "Welcome to the League of Wales, signors"!!

Cwmbran’s League Cup Quarter Final against Port Talbot Town takes place tonight, will both teams in good form. The Crows have recorded two successive victories against tough opposition, and Port Talbot remain unbeaten so far with four draws in the WPL.

Something will have to give of course, as there will have to be a winner on the night. A semi-final tie against Llanelli or Cardiff Grange Harlequins is the reward on offer.

The Crows are currently fourth in the WPL, and Port are twelfth, but this will mean very little in a cup competition. Instead, we may have to look at the goal threats on show: Kaid Mohamed is on fire at the moment with four goals so far this season (two in the last two games), and former Crow Rhys Griffiths is currently Port’s top scorer with two
