Veteran Dublin signs for Celtic

Dion Dublin has signed for Celtic until the end of the season after agreeing his release from Leicester City.

The versatile veteran played under Celtic manager Gordon Strachan while at Coventry City and can play in central defence or up front.

"Although I am 36, I feel fit and I am ready to go. I'm just happy to get the chance," Dublin told the club website.

"What are you going to say? When you get to play for Celtic, it is an incredible experience."

Dublin, who also had spells at Manchester United and Aston Villa is eligible to face Motherwell in Wednesday's CIS Insurance Cup semi-final.

"I know Alan Thompson from Villa, Paul Telfer from Coventry and Roy Keane from my Manchester United days," added Dublin.

"Hopefully, they will welcome me and make it easier for me because I am quite nervous.

"I may be 36 but I am still quite nervous to come to a place of this size.

"I know the fans are one of the biggest groups in the world. You don't get too much history of Celtic down south.

"But, having seen some games and played in friendlies against Celtic, I am just gobsmacked at the size of the place.

"I am just looking forward to being part of a good squad of players and, hopefully, I can add to that and help the team to success this season."

Celtic are short of a target man in attack, following Chris Sutton's departure to Birmingham, while Craig Beattie is injured.

And, despite his side leading the SPL by eight points, Strachan has had trouble in central defence, with his side leaking too many goals for his liking.

Bobo Balde is on duty at the African Cup of Nations, Du Wei failed to win a long-term deal and Roy Keane picked up an injury after playing one game at the back.

Affectionally known as "Cheggers" the former child actor became a household name, once described as a man with a bladder problem, as he was alway jiggling up and down like some sort of deranged manic. Keith was the sort of man that if you saw him whilst out shopping you would cross the road to avoid him.

After Swap Shop he continued to annoy Saturday Morning audiences in the pale imitation that was Saturday Superstore, (with the even more annoying Mike Read). During the late 1970s it seemed that you could not get away from him, his own show Cheggers Plays Pop (or Cheggers Goes Pop as we used to sing at school) became a hit on BBC Childrens television a mixture of pop music with a quiz involving giant inflatables and lots of jumping around, (and that was only Keith).

It was whilst being on Swap Shop that Keith met his wife to be, the wonderful Maggie Philbin, they wed in 1982 but the marriage ended in the early 1990s when Keiths depression turned him into an alcoholic and they divorced.
Now firmly back on the straight and narrow, he has made something of a TV comeback in recent years, including a stint as presenter of Channel 4s Big Breakfast, and most recently on the revival of the classic show It's a Knockout, and has also caused an outcry recently by appearing naked on a show on Channel 5.
