X-rays uncover 'hidden portrait' A rare portrait, believed to be of Shakespeare's only known patron, has been discovered using X-ray technology.
Art historians from Bristol University have found what they believe is a picture of Henry Wriothesley which was painted over in the 16th Century.
To the naked eye, it is a portrait of his wife Elizabeth Vernon, dressed in black and wearing ruby ear-rings.
The hidden picture was uncovered when the work was X-rayed in preparation for an exhibition in Somerset.
Radiography revealed that underneath the oil portrait of Elizabeth I's maid of honour was a ghostly male figure - an older work which had been painted over.
Flamboyant appearance
From the man's flamboyant appearance and long auburn hair, experts believe it shows Vernon's husband, Henry Wriothesley, the third Earl of Southampton.
He was Shakespeare's only known patron and experts said finding the picture was a significant discovery, although there are no plans to chip away the portrait of his wife to uncover him properly.
It is thought the unknown artist painted over the image, possibly because a commission for a double portrait of husband and wife was abandoned in favour of the single portrait seen today.
The painting is one of 12 to be seen in the display - entitled On the Nature of Women: Tudor and Jacobean Portraits of Women 1535-1620 - at Montacute House in Somerset.
Among other discoveries are a portrait thought to be of Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox, who was Mary Queen of Scots's mother-in-law and one believed to be of Lady Jane Grey, both of which have not been seen in public for more than 70 years.
It is the first display for the National Trust and the National Portrait Gallery to have been curated by university students.

Picture perfect: The paintings that look just like photographs A tattoo artist from Essex is the subject of a 9ft by 7ft portrait being unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery today.
Zoe Windle, 35, was painted in her bra by celebrated realist artist Jason Brooks, whose paintings are so lifelike that they resemble photographs.
Her image will hang alongside two more large Brooksworks - a portrait of Nobel prize-winning scientist Sir Paul Nurse, commissioned by the gallery, and another of Formula 1 driver Jenson Button.
....All three portraits relate to the artist's fascination with mortality: Sir Paul specialises in cancer research, Jenson Button is engaged in a dangerous sport and Ms Wendle endures pain to decorate her body.
Brooks said: "What's really important to me is having that pornographic gaze, that forensic detail. The flaws, the marks - they're the things that I fall in love with."
He uses his own photographs as the source for his paintings but he does not regard himself as a photorealist.
"My work is ephemeral and that relates to photography, the funereal aspect of photography, capturing that frozen moment," he said.
He applies paint using an airbrush to create every detail. From a distance the images are sharply defined, but close-up they are made up of abstract forms.
Catherine Bromley, spokeswoman for the National Portrait Gallery, said: "You could see it as a departure for us but we always push to represent new work, of which this is a good example.

Coooooooooool! direct linkPictured: The giant pink rabbit that can be seen from space - (page has several photos of bunny)Oct 15, 2008
A giant pink rabbit has been created in the Alps that can be seen from space.
Visitors are encouraged by those who made it to climb all over the 200ft toy sculpture and even sleep on it.
But the Austrian art collective who created the bunny were amazed to find that it is so large the rabbit can be seen from space via the Google Earth programme.
The pale-pink bunny which lies flat on its back in the Italian Alps took more than five years to build and is set to stay there until 2025.
It is made of soft, waterproof, materials and stuffed with straw to make it comfortable to rest on.
It was placed in a rural spot called Artesina in near Cuneo and attracts many visitors each year.
Wolfgang Gantner of the Vienna-based art group, Gelitin, said: 'It's supposed to make you feel small, like Gulliver. You walk around it and you can't help but smile.
'We like to see hikers climb up the bunny's 20ft sides and relax on his belly.'
The group have posted the rabbit's location on its Gelitin website along with a poetic description of the creation.
It reads: 'Behind a hill, as if knitted by giant grandmothers, lies this vast rabbit, to make you feel as small as a daisy.
'Happy you feel as you climb up along its ears, almost falling into its cavernous mouth, to the belly-summit and look out over the pink woollen landscape of the rabbit's body, a country dropped from the sky; ears and limbs sneaking into the distance; from its side flowing heart, liver and intestines.'
The rabbit was moved to the 5,000ft-high Fava region in 2005. 200ft pink rabbit can be seen from space - with pix A giant knitted rabbit in Italy can be seen from space by visitors - with pix It really is a bunny old world - with pix

20 Strange Sculptures (Part 1)Crying Men Photos - page has photos Hollywood hunks including Jude Law, Robert Downey, Jr. and Laurence Fishburne amazed artist Sam Taylor-Wood with their heart-felt sobs for her bizarre new exhibition, Crying Men.
The photographer asked the actors to produce real tears for a series of images which she hopes capture the vulnerable sides of the movie stars. She is particularly proud of pictures of the Cold Mountain hunk weeping in a fetal position and a portrait of Reservoir Dogs star Michael Madsen betraying his hard-man image by crying hysterically.
