It was the night of May 9, 2006 and not all was right in Gilmore land; Rory had thrown a huge London themed bash in honor of her boyfriend who would be leaving in the morning for a job that would keep him over seas for who knew how long. Lorelai had stood in the streets in front of Luke’s diner yelling at her fiancé that it was ‘now or never’ and when he couldn’t jump fast enough she all but ran into the arms of her ex and the father of her only child. Each woman lay in the arms of a man looking out their windows and wishing that there was a way to fix their respective lives, to go back to a time when things were simpler, easier. Eventually they slipped into a deep sleep.
When they woke up they were not where they last remembered being. Lorelai and Rory Gilmore woke up beside one another in a hostel in London… in what was clearly the year 2003. At first both women were reluctant to mention their strange ‘dreams’ but when they ran into a group of girls on their way to Ireland to stake out the Clarence Hotel in hopes of catching a glimpse of Bono Lorelai was instead reluctant and flippantly groused that Bono wouldn’t show anyway.
“How do you know Bono won’t show?”
“What are you so bent out of shape about? Now we can get home before Babette freaks out because we didn’t return when the itinerary I know you gave her says we will.”
“But how do you know Bono won’t show up?”
“I dreamed it, okay!? Two nights ago I dreamed the next three years of our lives and go ahead and call me insane but I swear we’ll sit in a pub eating soda crackers and weird cheese for two days and he won’t show.”
“Mom…I don’t think it was a dream…”
And so now the Gilmores have returned from Europe three days earlier than planned—after all, they’d seen it before—and have thrown themselves into preparing for Rory to leave for her first year at Yale because while she remembers everything she was taught, she still needs to take the classes. Lorelai becomes much more frugal much earlier, anticipating the need to ask Luke to borrow money to open the Dragonfly. Both women find themselves at odds, aware that the world around them moves in very much the same way and the choices and struggles that faced them before are facing them yet again. Rory must fight the internal question of whether or not to stop Dean from marrying Lindsey and Lorelai struggles with the idea that she could have Luke so much sooner or whether the fact that she wound up in Chris’s bed is a sign that they were never meant to be.
Knowing what they know, how will it affect the Gilmore girls’ decisions? How will it alter the timeline of their lives?
