Title: Temptation Waits

2008 – San Francisco

The Knights have fallen. The chance that was once held for humanity was lost with the simple sacking of one city, the murder of one man. Had the humans known at that moment their fate, they would have fled. They would have tried to hide themselves, or made peace with gods because that could have been all that gave them safety. The new order that would be taking over wasn’t going to grant them that boon though. There would be no safety. There would be no treaty. There would be no future for those that did not submit to the destiny that was made for them.

~2083 ~

Those that had once remembered a time when the vampire did not rule their existence were few and far between, most being disposed of when their use became limited and their doddering became annoying. There was not a place where safety wasn’t sought out from the ruling overlords that took what they wanted and destroyed what they didn’t. In some places, where the people were smart, or perhaps didn’t know any better, there was a tense kind of peace between the vampire rulers and the human populace – the humans served the vampires and the vampires took only what was needed. Most cities were under the rule of vicious creatures though, that were only interested in advancing their kind. Just as the human rulers before them, they ruled the people as they saw fit. The only difference was there was no law that kept them from having you publicly murdered on the spot of a trespass, to use you as a lesson to others.

Marcus Vasile had started this tidal change – the downfall of the order of Elders came with the murder of the one eldest – Alexander the Great. Having spent what could only be an eternity to one as old as him hiding in the shadows, as soon as his maker was dispatched, there was nothing to hold him back, nothing to stop him from putting his plans into action. Those that tried were stopped, viciously, in their tracks. The show of power, of cruelty, of complete disregard to the human cause was taken in terror. Some tried to flee the captured city of San Francisco, but it was in vain. When news reached out that a vampire was publicly living at the head of power in the city, others rose up. The government, too concerned about trying to cover up such an unbelievable event, had quickly over thrown, the military dismantled, and total control seized by the nightwalkers. No one had ever expected that something like this could happen. The major cities of the world soon fell in line, vampires overthrowing human governments and taking control. There were of course, those vampires that didn’t wish to make themselves known. Marcus had always abhorred the idea of being hidden in the darkness, only a phantom fairy tale, but there were others unlike him. Where these vampires were the strongest, and eldest, there were puppet governments put in place. Yes, everyone knew that the vampires held control, but there was some semblance of order held up by a human government that was controlled from the shadows.

Just as humans had justified their expansion over the world, claiming to be smarter, more civilized than those there before them, the vampires took complete control. It was for the best, they said, that the stronger species control the weaker. Of course, this was met with outcries from those that thought themselves strong enough to go up against the vampires. In San Francisco, and in a few other cities he had traveled, Leon Renatus, Marcus’ childe, personally dealt with these outcries. This, in turn, was met with a mass killing of hunters and humans alike, and there was order imposed on the shattered remains of the civilization. Now, the hunters, still alive and plotting against their undead rulers, are allied across the nation. Of course, were they to throw down the vampire rule in one place, someone would simply come to replace them, so they had to work together. An organization was formed in secret, those that were strong enough or brave enough, or at the vampires’ insistence, crazy enough to stand up against their rulers began to network, all under the instruction of (insert name here), a hunter with extraordinary connections and the ability to move from place to place to help the smaller ‘rebel’ hunter groups fight the vampires. Of course, there are some vampires that do not care for this style of rule, preferring the way that it once was. These vampires ally themselves with humans to fight their brethren, though in secret, and are friends to the humans that are enslaved to the vampire ruling class.

However as with any drastic change in an ecosystem, the increase of vampires has caused a massive threat to the human population – something that they would not care about save for the fact that if the human race dies off it would cause the vampire race to die off as well since there would be no steady source of food. Genetic advances have, however, turned in the vampires favor and ‘human farms’ have sprouted up across the world. Places where humans are breed like common cattle. Lead by head geneticists under the command of Leon Renatus, the humans are altered to regenerate quickly after being bitten so they are a steady source of food, but they are also implanted with an innate fear of vampires. Bred and raised to be subservient to their overlords, the free human race is dwindling in strength. The vampires are in a tense treaty with each other, but as the free human population dwindles, and the mutation lines lie in the hands of the vampires in power, the treaty is beginning to crumble. There is turbulence right beneath the new Order’s feet, and it is quickly becoming a rip-tide. Will there be such a quick fall to the new order, or will it crush all opposition, dooming humans to an eternity of servitude?
