rebuilding the earth
the year is five thousand two hundred
eighty-nine. you live in a world that is
coming to an end. the sun flickers for
the last time and goes out. a world without
light? impossible. deaths? inevitable. the end of
existence? not quite. they have the means to
help just two hundred people escape. and
everyone wants to be one of these people.
but there are guidelines, requirements that one
must fill to be one of the elite. they aren't
going to take just anyone. and who gets the
responsibility of picking? you don't know. no
one does. but someone is releasing names, just
one at a time. each day, you wait intently, praying
that they will pick your name. so many people
in the world and only two hundred will live. the
selections - they seem terribly random. a shy teenage
girl that you would never give a second look to.
a successful lawyer. an alcoholic. with each name,
people are left with one question - why? why
are they the ones getting picked?
and then it happens. your name is picked. there
are no instructions, but you know what to do. it's
as if it has been there in your mind and suddenly,
something triggered your memory, sparked these lost
thoughts into the front of your mind. you find yourself
with the other chosen people. these are your whole, the
people you will live with for the rest of your life. no
family, no friends, no one familiar to the life you used
to enjoy. but you have no complaints; you are going
to live. you will forever be remembered as one of
the founders of this new world. it is up to you to start
a society in an empty void of space.
they call it velleoun and it is your home. earth is
recorded in history and ceases to exist. velleoun shares
similarities with your old habitat, but it is very much
different. the climate is warmer and it rarely rains. the
air free from pollution, the land free from cement buildings
and transportation vehicles. everybody knows everybody;
you call yourselves equal. velleoun is the perfect
place to start over, to rebuild earth in the best way possible.
everything is shared. you share food, talents, living arrangements.
it is still a puzzle why these people were the ones
chosen, but the society thrives.
five thousand ninety. others begin to show up. they can't
be the humans; no one could have survived the
destruction of the first earth. they call themselves the
originals and you become the new. they claim that the
land belongs to them. an agreement is reached and
the two groups of life settle the land together. but the
perfect situation is no longer as perfect. the originals want things
done in ways differently than the new. tension fills this
new land. the friendships between the originals and the new
are fake, meaningless. it's an act, all of it. everyone
wants things from everyone else and will go to the ends
of velleoun to get these things.
will peace ever truly occur between the originals and the new?
will this new land ever reach the same level as the
former earth?
