i know i started the happy life and never finished it, but i will finish it, i promise! i just decided to take a break from it, and i started this story!
SAVED
Is a story about a girl who is abandoned by her poor family, and who must rough it on her own. Then, she is put in an orphanage where she is adopted and moves to California where she meets a boy while trying to adjust to her new life.
I live in a poor country. I live in a shack. I’ve been wearing the same clothes for three months now. I’m not rich. This is the only life that I’ve ever known. I wish that I was like all of the tourists who ride their horses past here with their beautiful jewelry and nice clothes, but I’m not. I know that it’s getting hard for Mom to take care of me and my little brother and sister. My family and our neighbors are behind with the rent, and it’s only a matter of time until we’re evicted from our home. I heard Mom and Dad arguing last night. They said if they got rid of one of us, that things would be more affordable.
The next morning I woke up to find my Mom throwing all of my belongings into a plastic bag.
“What’s going on?” I asked sleepily as my Mom looked up from her packing.
“We’re going on a trip.” Mom said. “Get up, we’re leaving in ten minutes.”
I got up off of the dirt floor and into my parents room. My Dad looked at me and then walked outside. I usually got that look from my Dad when I did something wrong.
“Come on, we’re leaving now.” Mom said as she put on her shoes.
“Mommy, Mommy,” my brother and sister said. “Can we come, too?”
“No, stay here.” Mom said as she walked out the door.
Mom led the way as we walked miles and miles down the dirt road until we reached town. She stopped and then turned around to face me.
“This is where I leave you.” she said to me. I was confused. This is where she left me?
“You’re…you’re leaving me?”
“We can’t take all of you kids. Me and your father talked…you’re the oldest which means you can take care of yourself. Good luck okay?” Mom said as she pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and then walked away. I just stared at her as she walked into the distance. I couldn’t believe that my family had just abandoned me. It felt like the world was pressed on fast forward and I couldn’t press stop. I was all alone.
shall i continue?

I didn’t know what to do. Who could I turn to now that my family had just abandoned me? I was surrounded by a crowd of people, yet I felt so alone. There was no phone to call for help, and even if there was I wouldn’t have anyone to call. It was still early in the day, so there was time for me to figure out where I would be staying that night.
It was probably around midday and I hadn’t eaten since I had woken up earlier that morning. I looked hungrily at the fruit stands. The unripe mangoes were starting to look very appetizing. I watched as the man begged people to buy his disgusting fruit.
“Ah, sir, would you like to buy one of my delicious fruits?” he asked a vacationer as he motioned ‘no’ with his hands and then continued to talk on his cell phone. “Ah, madam, you look famished, would you like to try one of my delicious fruits?” The woman had been taking pictures with her daughter when the man had asked him. The little girl nodded, the mangoes seemed to reflect in her light blue eyes and they approached the man’s cart.
Now was my chance. All I had to do was sneak up behind the man and his customers and take a fruit, and if they saw me I would run as fast as I could. I didn’t like stealing, but it was the only way my family could keep alive. I took a deep breath and made pretend to be looking at the jewelry on the cart next to the fruit stand. The man was engaged in an intense conversation about sanitation in the Dominican Republic with the woman. I turned around, and as I did I saw the man’s eyes shift from the woman to me. Now was my only chance, even if he did see me. I grabbed the fruit, and ran.
“Get back here you thief!” the man shouted from his cart. People began to look in my direction as I ran through the crowd, pushing people all over the place as I ran. I turned around to see the man chasing after me. I cursed, because for a fat man, he ran awful fast. I ran as fast as I could until I felt like I couldn’t run any longer. I turned around, happy to see no sign of the man behind me. Then I saw him slowly working his way through the crowd, still shouting. I quickly took off again until I ran into a long line of people. I was confused; I had never been to this part of town before. I pushed through the line until I made my way towards the front of the line.
“Hey, no cuts!” the man at the front of the line said.
“Oh, please, Carlos. She’s only a child!” a woman said.
“I haven’t been able to get in here for a week! Seven days! I’m not letting anyone take my home away from me!” a man said angrily as he took a step towards me. I backed away. He was awfully large, and scary looking, and I was very small for my age.
“Is there a problem?” a man regulating the line asked.
“No sir, she’s with me.” the woman said. She looked at me, waiting me to move into the building with her, but I hesitated, that is until I saw the fat man running towards us, then I quickly jumped into the building.

“Thanks.” I said as we entered the building.
“No problem, miss.” the woman said as she smiled down at me. She had a kind of friendly glow to her face, and I got a warm feeling when I was around her. Even though I didn’t know her, I could tell that there was good inside this woman. “What’s your name, darling?”
“My name’s Pita.”
“My name is Marianna.” The woman said as she put out her hand. I smiled at her and we shook hands and she smiled back. That’s when I looked around for the first time. Everyone in this place was dressed like me, in ripped up, dirty clothes that smelt terrible. I looked around at the beds around us. That’s when I realized where we were.
“I’m guessing this is your first time at the shelter, Hun.” I nodded. I looked at all the homeless people like me. To the naked eye, they seemed rough, scary, and mean, but really they were the kindest people. I watched as a man helped an elderly woman into

a chair in the cafeteria, and how a woman was reading a book to a little girl. People thought we were crude because of our looks, but really they were crude for being so judgmental. That was when I realized that we have to stick together, because no one could ever see us for who we truly are.
i'll write some more a little later : )
