Another year is about to pass me by. I sighed. I'm being forced to go to the Higgins party. My mother, the society lover. I don't like New York. I'd give anything to go back to New Jersey. Or San Francisco at least.

I put on the lipstick I hated to wear. All set.

I stared at my Etnies stuffed at the back of my shoe cupboard. All I want to be is the girl who goes out in her hoodie and sneakers, and that's enough.

"Come on, Sweetness."

I looked up to find my mother standing in the doorway. She's beautiful, she really is. I wonder how my parents ever produced me. Not like I'm exactly some ugly duckling, but I'm pretty average. Not that I've been helping myself along in the beauty area. I've been dying my naturally platinum hair a nice, ordinary brown since I was thirteen, I refuse to wear any makeup, and I try to wear my glasses as much as possible, even though I have custom-made contact lenses.

"Sweetnam, I'm waiting."

"Fine, Mom." I slid on the sparkling red heels lying at the foot of my bed and I followed her out of the room.
