Title: Untitled
Description: A story about best friends
Cheesecake - July 21, 2006 12:26 AM (GMT)
I'm not exactly sure what to rate this story because I might decide to add things, so for now I'll just say PG.
Everytime Sarah looked at him her heart ached. She liked him so much, but there was nothing she could do about it. Greg was like a big brother to her. He would never like her that way. If he knew that she liked him, it would ruin everything!
Sarah had grown up with Greg. Their parents were good friends so they had known each other for as long as they could remember. He was two years older than Sarah (he was seventeen and she was fifteen) and until now that had always seemed like that was a huge difference. They were practically complete opposites. He was loud and outgoing, while she was quiet and shy. He was also very mischieveous, and while Sarah was not like this by nature, when they were together he always brought out the troublemaker in her.
They both lived in a small suburban town in Long Island. It was very quiet, and nothing exciting ever happened there. Sarah enjoyed the peace and quiet of their home. Greg on the other hand yearned for the excitement of the city. He was always talking about how he was going to move to Manhatten one day. He'd been there a few times with his parents and absolutely loved it. Sarah, however, thought it was too big and fast paced. Although whenever Greg talked about it, it didn't seem half bad. Plus, the thought of him being there to show her around was a really good selling point. For now though, Mayville was their home.

One night, Sarah was sitting in her room reading late at night. It was summertime, a few days before the fourth of July. Suddenly, she heard a tap at the window, a pebble. She looked down, and there was Greg.
"Come down here, I wanna show you something!" he said to her. Sarah shook her head and rolled her eyes in mock annoyance, as she secretly loved it when he did this.
"Gimme a minute!" she said and she rushed to fix her hair and arrange her stuffed animals underneath the blanket on her bed. Once she was ready she climbed out the window, walked along the first story roof, climbed down to the porch banister and hopped down. An art she had perfected over years of practice.
"Took ya long enough!" Greg teased.
"Shut up!" she said and pushed his shoulder.
"Oh the pain! Oh, please, have mercy on me!" he begged sarcastically.
"So what do you want to show me?" Sarah asked, ignoring his teasing.
"It's great, you'll never guess!" he said as he grabbed her by the arm and led her into a foresty area nearby. Eventually they reached a clearing. "Wait here" Greg said as he ran into the middle of the clearing and began setting something up. When he was done he ran back to Sarah.
"What are you-" Sarah began.
"Shh!" and suddenly there was a whistling noise from the middle of the clearing. Sarah looked just in time.
"BANG!" it was fireworks! Sarah was startled and jumped back only to lose her balance on a rock. Greg caught her just in time. She paused in his arms for a moment and looked up at his face, his golden-brown hair framing his forehead. The fireworks in the background were very fitting.
"You okay?" he asked similing.
"Oh, uh, yeah!" she said snapping back into reality. "I'm fine."
"Scared you didn't it?" he asked as he guided her back upright.
"Yeah, guess so. Where'd you get them anyway?" she said, quickly changing the subject.
"My uncle brought them when he visited from Texas. He gave them to my dad for the fourth of July, but I managed to sneak a few away." he said gazing up at the show. Sarah on the other hand had trouble concentrating on the fireworks. She just wanted to be back in Greg's arms again.
Later that night Sarah couldn't sleep. She'd been in his arms, she should be happy, but she couldn't help but worry. She was worried that her feelings for Greg might put a strain on their friendship. Even more than that she worried that it would never be anything more than a friendship. But that had always been enough before, why did it suddenly seem like it wasn't?
Sarah decided to stop worryingfor now. She could still be his friend, she always had been. Besides, it was better than nothing, wasn't it? She fell asleep that night imsgining Greg confessing his love to her.

Sorry it took me a while to update, my computer's been going haywire.
The next day Sarah and Greg went to the local diner for a couple of sodas. Greg looked at his watch.
“Three and a half hours and counting!” He said excitedly. “And this year, you are going on the Ferris wheel!”
“Oh, did I say this year? No, I meant next year! Yeah, next year I’ll go on the Ferris wheel.”
“No, no, no, don’t try and squirm your way out of it this time. You’re doing it tonight!” he ordered. You see Sarah had a terrible fear of heights, and was always too afraid to go on the Ferris wheel at the annual town fair. Greg had tried to make her go on it last year, but she begged him to give her on more year.
That evening, when they got to the fair, Greg dragged Sarah onto the line for the Ferris wheel.
“Greg, please don’t make me do this!” she begged, “I can’t, I just can’t!”.
“Listen to me Sarah!” he said as he put his hands on her shoulders, “You can do this! There’s nothing to be afraid of! You’re gonna be fine!”. She nodded weakly. What had she gotten herself into?
A few minutes later they were climbing into their seats on the Ferris wheel. Sarah held her breath as they glided up and backwards. The wheel then gently stopped as they were a few feet above the ground.
“What happened? Why did we stop?” Sarah asked panicking.
“Calm down, there just gonna let more people on.” Greg said soothingly. Sarah let out a huge sigh of relief. Once the next pair of passengers was seated, the ride began. Sarah was too afraid to even open her eyes.
“Sarah it’s ok, you can open your eyes now.” Sarah opened them just as they had reached the very top. She saw how high they were and gasped. Petrified, she leaned into Greg, burying her face in his chest. He put his arm around her and held her tight.
“Don’t worry Sarah. I promise, I won’t let anything happen to you. Now, just try and open your eyes again.”. That was the last thing she wanted to do. She just wanted to stay like this, in Greg’s arms forever. “Come on Sarah, it’s all right.”. Finally she looked up at Greg. For a while she just stared deeply into his dark, green eyes. When she did snap out of it she turned to look forward. This time, she wasn’t so afraid. Somehow, having Greg’s arm around her made her feel safe. She looked out on the breathtaking view of the Manhattan skyline.
“Oh wow!” she whispered, completely awestruck.
“Isn’t it awesome?” Greg said looking in the same direction.
“I can actually see why you want to live there. It’s so beautiful!” She said and they both just gazed at it for the rest of the ride. When they stopped at the top to let people off Sarah didn’t even notice. She was too entranced by the amazing view and her dreams of living in the city with Greg.
“Hey, you did it!” he said suddenly.
“Did what?”
“You conquered your fear!” he said proudly.
“Oh my gosh, I did!” she said and wrapped her arms around Greg, thanking him. Just as she did, the seat rocked from the movement. Sarah screamed and clung to Greg even tighter.
“It’s all right Sarah, the seat just moves sometimes, you’re fine.” Greg said trying to comfort her without letting out a little laugh. She carefully let go and sat back.
“Heh, I knew that!” She said trying to cover up.
“Yeah, sure you did.” Greg said laughing.

Later that night Sarah found herself worrying over her feelings for Greg, again. She couldn’t stand keeping this from him! It was killing her and she didn’t think she could act like everything was fine any longer. So the big question, should she tell him and risk losing him as a friend? Or should she keep it to herself and risk losing her sanity? Neither option was very appealing to her.
The next morning Sarah had made up her mind. She had a dream the night before in which Greg took her in his arms, and told her he loved her! Sarah considered this to be a sign, and knew she wanted to tell him!
Just when she was trying to think of a way to tell Greg about her feelings for him, he called to ask her if she could hang out. Of course, she said yes, and they decided to meet at the diner.
When Sarah got there she found him sitting at their usual booth, beaming from ear to ear.
“What are you so happy about?” she asked, confused.
“You’ll never guess who I met when I was walking home from the carnival last night!” he said barely able to contain himself.
“Who?”
“Brianna!” as soon as he said this name it was all Sarah could do not to flinch. She and Greg had met Brianna at a block party about a week earlier. She was a cousin of Greg’s friend, Will. Will was introducing her to his friends from school, because she’d be going there in the fall. As soon as she saw Greg she got this “I want you look in her on her face. Sarah had wanted to punch her right then and there, but of course, didn’t. Instead she just went into a very bad mood for the rest of the day. Greg, however, didn’t notice this, as he was too busy flirting with Brianna.
“Brianna?” Sarah repeated once she was finally able to speak.
“Yeah. We’ve been talking on the phone a lot since the block party, and she was at Will’s house when I went there the other day. So, when we saw each other last night, we got to talking, and decided to, you know, go out! Start seeing each other. Isn’t that great?” His words were like a knife through Sarah’s heart. He had been talking to her?! And now they were going out?! Sarah just wanted to crawl under a rock and die. She sat there, staring at him for what seemed like an eternity, until she finally responded.
“You mean like, boyfriend/girlfriend?” she said trying to sound happy for him.
“Yeah! She’s nice right? You like her?” Sarah thought about his question. She realized she really had no idea whether or not Brianna was nice. When she had met her she was concentrating too hard on how much she wanted to strangle her to actually get to know her. Not that Sarah really wanted to get to know the girl who stole her stole her love from her, but that was beside the point.
“Well, I mean I don’t really know her, but yeah, I guess so.” Sarah said still trying to act cool about the whole thing, something she was not finding particularly easy to do.
“Oh, well you’ll get to know her. She’s really great!” Sarah forced herself to smile and nod. Just then the waitress came by with the sodas Greg had ordered before Sarah got there. She downed hers in under a minute, while Greg continued to rave about Brianna. A little while later (after Sarah had drunk three sodas whereas Greg had barely touched his first) he was finally finished babbling on about his new love interest. “Well, anyway, I’d better get going now. I’ve got to go meet up with Brianna now. You need a ride?”
“Oh, uh, that’s all right. It’s nice outside, I’ll just walk.” she said and he hurried out, his head still in the clouds. Sarah’s head was somewhere else too. She was imagining herself comforting Greg at Brianna’s funeral, thereby making him fall madly in love with her. This however just made her feel even worse. As mad as she was, wishing Brianna dead still made her feel guilty. Sarah went to lie her head down on the table, and accidently banged it with an unexpected amount of force. This of course left her with a splitting headache, and an entire diner full of people staring at her as though she were a crazed lunatic. She quickly paid the check and ran outside only to find out that it wasn’t exactly “nice” outside. In fact it was so blistering hot that she thought she might faint before she made it home. Once there, she went up to her room, collapsed on her bed, and screamed into her pillow.

Thanks. I see what you mean about that paragraph, I'll try to fix that.
Ok, I'm not sure but this next part might be considered PG13. It's really not bad though so I'll just leave it at PG.
A little while later Sarah’s friend Jill, from school, called. Aside from Greg, Jill was Sarah’s best friend, and she knew all about Sarah’s feelings for Greg. Sarah told Jill all about Brianna.
“Sarah, I’m so sorry! Stupid Brianna!” Jill said, emphasizing each syllable in Brianna’s name with hatred. “And stupid Greg! How can he not see the great girl right in front of him? He has to go and get some bimbo he doesn’t even know!”
“Thanks Jill, you always make me feel better!” Sarah said, though she was still very upset.
“No problem, and hey, you know what will make you feel even better?” Jill said optimistically.
“What?”
“A trip to the beach with us girls! And who knows, maybe you’ll find some other guy who tickles your fancy!”
“Oh Jill!” Sarah agreed and they called their friends from school, Angela and Mary, and decided to meet at the beach in a half hour.
When Sarah got there, they were all waiting for her with loads of junk food, just what the doctor ordered for a broken heart. The three of them managed to cheer her up, and eventually she nearly forgot about Greg.
After swimming for a while, they all decided to go back to the blanket, lounge around and pig out for a while. That’s when Sarah saw something that nearly made her heart stop. Sitting on a blanket at the back of the beach, were Greg and Brianna, making out! Sarah just stood there, dumbstruck, her heart breaking even more.

Sorry it's been so long since my last update, i had a bit of a case of writer's block. Anyway here you go!
“Oh Sarah!” Jill said as she realized what was going on. “Sarah I’m sorry.” She felt a little guilty about having suggested the beach.
“It’s getting really hot, why don’t we go back in the water?” Mary asked, trying to distract Sarah from Greg and Brianna’s little show.
“I’ve got an even better idea!” Angela said staring at a bunch of hot guys a few blankets away.
“Angela, what’re you planning?” Sarah asked, noticing the mischief in Angela’s eyes. As soon as everyone saw what Angela was looking at, they knew exactly what she was up to. Without even answering Sarah, Angela started strutting over to the hotties.
“Hey, can I borrow some sun block, I ran out.” She asked, smiling flirtatiously.
“Sure!” they said simultaneously and rushed to pass her the bottle. Angela giggled.
“Thanks, I’m Angela by the way.” She said as she took the sun block and rubbed the tiniest bit on her shoulders. They announced their names as well. There was Josh, Billy, Scott and Anthony. “Nice to meet you guys. See you around.” She gave back the sun block and started to walk away slowly. She counted to herself 1…2…-
“Hey Angela!” one of them called, just as she’d planned. She turned around. “You wanna, you know, hang?”
“Yeah, sure. Come over and meet my friends!” she said and continued walking as they gathered their things.
“Prepare to be cheered up!” Angela said to Sarah when she reached their blanket.
The boys rushed over and Angela introduced everyone. Sarah was a little uncomfortable at first, but then she got to know the boys a little and she liked them. Still, no matter what she couldn’t stop thinking about Greg and looking over at him every few minutes. Finally, Greg actually noticed she was there. He smiled at her then turned back to Brianna. It was then that Sarah decided that she wasn’t going to just sit there while Brianna stole Greg from her. She was going to make Greg jealous! She wasn’t exactly sure if that was possible, but she was going to find out.
Sarah decided Josh would be perfect for her plan. He was a year older than her, very cute, and seemed interested. She felt a little bad using him like this, but all she really could think about was Greg.
So while they were all sitting on the blanket talking, Sarah slowly made her way over to Josh. As she tried flirting with him, she realized she didn’t really know how to flirt. She’d never actually flirted with a guy before. So she just tried to act really nice to him, and it actually seemed to work! She wondered if this was what flirting really was.
Angela noticed how Sarah seemed to really like Josh. Hoping to nudge them along, she suggested a game of Truth or Dare.

At first Sarah thought that would be perfect. Then once she realized what Angela must have in mind, she got a little worried. Worried or not, there was nothing she could do, besides, hopefully this would either make Greg jealous, or possibly even make her forget about him, which she highly doubted.
"Okay, who wants to go first?" Angela asked once everyone agreed to playing. No one was brave enough to volunteer though. "Oh come on, someone's got to do it!"
"Fine I'll go." Josh said smiling at Sarah. Sarah's heart began beating at an alarming speed when Angela dared Josh to kiss her. Then she looked over at Greg. He had his arm around Brianna but was looking in their direction. Suddenly all her worries left her. She turned back to Josh and nodded, smiling. He smiled back and leaned in to kiss her. In spite of her feelings for Greg, Sarah truly hoped she would feel something when they kissed. Something that would make her forget about Greg. Then this nightmare would be over. Unfortunately, when their lips touched there was nothing there. No sparks, no fireworks, she felt nothing for Josh.
Suddenly she felt Josh being pushed away from her. She opened her eyes and looked up, and there was Greg. At first she thought she must be dreaming, could this actually be happening? Maybe her nightmare would come to an end!
"Who the hell are you?" Greg demanded, staring at Josh. Sarah had to force herself not to smile.
"What are you her boyfriend or something?" Josh asked in surprise.
"No I'm not her boyfriend!" Sarah's heart sank. Greg sounded disgusted by the suggestion. "But I will kick anyone's ass for trying anything on her!"
"What's your problem? It was just a kiss!" but Greg ignored him and grabbed Sarh's bag.
"Sarah, I'm taking you home." he said as he grabbed her arm and started pulling her away.
"Greg what are you doing?" Sarah demanded pulling her arm back. "What's your problem?"
"My problem is you don't even know this guy and he's got his hands all over you!"
"Look man," Josh said, trying to reason with him.
"You just shut up!" Greg snapped.
"Greg what is wrong with you?!" Sarah asked.
"Greg you are acting kind of, um, rash." Brianna added hesitantly.
"Look, I'm just trying to protect her!" again Sarah had to force herself not to smile. Brianna on the other hand just rolled her eyes. "I mean you know, cause she's like a little sister to me." he added, and suddenly Sarah had no problem not smiling.
"Well she's not your little sister! Wait, is she, are you?" Josh turned to Sarah in confusion.
"No I'm not!" she said never taking her eyes off Greg.
"Well, I'm still taking you home!" Sarah turned to her girlfriends, but they just stared back at her, not knowing what to say. Greg waited a few seconds then grabbed Sarah's hand and started walking away. Reluctantly she followed. Sarah looked over at Brianna, who was clinging to Greg's other arm as they walked. Suddenly she realized this was not what she'd wanted.
They'd only gotten a few steps away before Sarah stopped, jerking Greg to a stop.
"Sarah-" he began.
"No Greg, you can't be like this. I am not your little sister." she looked him square in the eye, expecting him to be angry. Instead he just seemed hurt.
"Fine." he said flatly and walked away. Sarah watched him leave the beach and wondered if things ould ever be the same.

Sarah left the beach early that day, leaving behind a very confused Jake and some concerned friends. She took the long way home, so she could think through everything. She had a lot to think about. So it was true, Greg really did just think of her as a sister type. She knew that in a way, it was really sweet that he thought that, but for Sarah, it just didn't seem like enough anymore. When she thought about Brianna, and how much Greg seemed to like her, she realized it would have to be enough, at least for now. It was Greg as a friend, or no Greg at all, though she wasn't exactly sure which was worse.

Sarah had been so deep in thought, that she didn't even realize where she was going. Before she knew it, she was standing in front of Greg's house. She was about to turn around and rush home when she saw Greg's father's car in the driveway. Since she knew Greg was using the car today, she figured he must be home, though somehow she already knew he would be.
Sarah stood in front of the house for a few minutes, unsure of what she should do. Finally, she walked to the side of his house, and climbed the tree by his window. She got to the top, and before she even tapped on the window he opened it. They stared at each other for a minute.
"Wanna take a walk?" she said finally. He nodded and climbed down with her.
"I'm sorry." Greg said after they were walking a few minutes. "I know I can't tell you what to do, but I do feel like I should protect you sometimes." Sarah couldn't help but smile at the thought of having Greg as a protector. Then she remembered his little sister comment. She was so confused she didn't know what to say, so she just nodded.
Sarah could feel her eyes welling up with tears. Greg knew there was more to why she was upset, but for once, he had no idea why. That rarely ever happened.
"Sarah, what is it?" she opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. "Whatever it is, you can tell me." she wished she could, it was breaking her heart not to tell him, but she knew that would just make things worse.
"Sarah talk to me!" she couldn't hold it in anymore. The tears started pouring down her face faster than she could wipe them away. Greg looked at her, worried and confused. Sarah turned away, unable to look at him. Suddenly she felt his arms wrap around her. She leaned her cheek against his chest not wanting him to ever let go.
They stood like that fo a while after Sarah had stopped crying. Finally, Greg gently pushed her away.
"Are you gonna be ok?" he asked, his hands on her shoulders. He looked deep into her eyes, in a way that Sarah wasn't sure he ever has before. "Sarah?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine." she said finally, snapping out of the trance she was in.
"Are you sure you don't wanna talk about it?"
"I'm sure."
"Okay, I'll walk you home." they walked back to her house in an awkward silence. "Are you sure you're okay?" Greg asked when they got there.
"I'm sure." and she turned to walk up the path.
"You know you can talk to me right? I mean, whatever it is, I'm here for you."
"I know, I just, can't talk about it right now."
"Okay."
