Yay! A story by me! I guess you're all thinking it's about time I posted
one, seeing as I made this place.
I'm not so sure if I like it, but see
what you think.

I might not finish it...I tend to get bored with
writing long stories.

Anyway,

Chapter One

Azra Skeffington scowled. "You didn't tell me there was a party."

"Yes, I did. You just forgot. Again," her mother said. "Why don't you wear that dress of yours with the blue ribbons? It looks lovely with your eyes."

"But I wanted to go out."

"If you made plans, you'll have to cancel them. I'm sure your friends will understand."

"I didn't make plans. I just wanted to go out." But finally Azra obeyed, and put on an old dress that itched, and smelled like the attic.

She walked downstairs. Some people had arrived already, and they looked surprised that the host and hostess's daughter was late. Apparently they hadn't noticed she wasn't there before.

Azra disliked her parents' parties, not only because they always involved her getting dressed up, but also for the adults who bothered her with silly questions like "How's school?" and "What do you want to be when you grow up?" because they didn't think they knew how to talk to children. The one good thing about these parties, was that after some time they left her alone, and she had a hiding place under the dining room table to read, and stay away.

But--here was one of those mentioned people now.

"Astra!" came the loud booming voice of Aunt Caroline.

"Azra," said Azra.

"Yes, yes, right. It's been so long since I last saw you! How old are you now? Seven? Eight?"

"Nine years, six months, and three weeks."

"Of course. How's school?"

Azra had a feeling that her aunt wasn't listening to her anymore, (if she had been at all) and felt like testing her theory.

"My teacher was killed by a bomb that was planted in her desk by one of her students. I know which one did it, but I can't tell anyone because he said he would kill me next. And I got an A in math."

"An A? Your parents must be so proud of you."

Well, at least Aunt Caroline had heard some of her tale.

"How is your brother doing?"

That was another popular question. It generally meant that the person had grown bored of her. People were much more interested in her brother. They always remembered his name, (Nikolai) his age, (10 months, as of today) and what kind of things he enjoyed. (dogs and ceiling fans) Azra didn't mind.

"You can go and see him if you want. He's over by..." Azra stopped. Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw a figure approaching Nikolai's cradle. It wouldn't have been unusual, but the figure was quite short, wearing some sort of cape, and unnerved her in general.

Then it was gone.

She looked around. No one else seemed to have noticed. Maybe it was just her imagination. Mother and Father said she had a good one.

Aunt Caroline had moved to Nikolai by now, and Azra was alone.

She knew what she wanted to do. She went to the dining room, and ducked under the table. Finding her book where she had left it last, she opened it up and began to read silently.

are you sure she left? aww! too bad! this storie's really good. and it's true about adults! it bugs me! i mean, why do they care how school is? they don't actually care about us, just what we can do for them or that they can make us be what they didn't get to be themselves! i mean, please! i can take care of my own life, thank you very much!
