Title: Eldar City Terrain
Description: Cheaply made
Typhoid_Garry - January 8, 2007 10:22 PM (GMT)
I recently came to the conclusion that I'll been letting a lot of good plastic go to waste around our house. Soda bottles, Gatorade bottles, V8 bottles, pie containers, salad containers, all that good stuff. We go through a lot of it in a week, and though most of it can be returned for CRV, it seems like such a waste now. Now that I realized how aesthetically pleasing it all is as Eldar Terrain:

I just got to thinking; "what good is having Everguard, if they've got nothing
to guard?" So I came up with this piece yesterday. The platform holds 50 standard bases, so probably 25-35 based models depending on thier poses, and can easily land a grav-tank on. This is just the first stage. I have yet to build the "floating" tower that branches off from the top of the spire (to break up the phallic look), doorways, and plenty of Apoxie-Sculpt to hide the name brands, tape (which mark where the rest of the wraithbone footings will line up), and sharp edges. I'm also considering a ribcage-like wraithbone design around the edge of the platform. Taking heavy inspiration from all the scenery sketches in the new codex.
Also in the works are a tank-sized webway portal, and defensive spires.

Very refreshing to see some Xenos terrain. Promising start and I'll be watching this closely.

Heehee! You said "phallic"!

yea lets not be all childish about it, you have any comments other then that?
Rad XIII - January 9, 2007 08:24 PM (GMT)
Hahaha! it really does look phallic, try to add some semi-spherical entrances protruding from the bottom to break this up ;)

Did the beginning work on the webway portal:

The black piece up front will be cut out to make way for a series of steps.
I'm having a bit of trouble deciding how to make the gun spires, I may need to raid the beverage aisle at the local Vons for appropriate shapes.
Edit:
Made the steps.

Now I need to re-cut the two wraithbone pieces framing the stairway. Didn't think that through too well the first time.

Those are very cool Garry, so cool that I just might have to nick your ideas for myself.
I especially like the webway portal. Excellent work, can't wait to see more. ;)

Posterboard is blocky, Wraithbone is organic and curvy. How do you fix that? Here's my solution:

I doubt I'm tthe first person to try this. But I include this for those who would like to know how it's done. First, cut out your basic shape from posterboard. Always use a sharp blade and try using a scrap piece of posterboard to back it, as it will dull the blade less than a cutting board will. Make sure it fits where ever you may need it to fit. Now, mark any edges you would like to close off. Any edges that will be connected to other structures should be left as is. Take your blade to the edges that you've marked and carve a V-groove down the legnth, between the paper faces. Remove the foam you've just cut. Masking tape is probably best for the next step, as the Apoxie-Sculpt used later doesn't seem to have any trouble sticking to it. You may want to prepare by tearing 10-15 small pieces of tape at a time. Pinch the paper faces together along your open edges, and tape them snugly closed. Continue this along the edges where needed. As you can see, it gives a much better "natural" look to Wraithbone structures. I experimented, and it also made this piece much more aerodynamic. Well, there you have it. Hopefully next week I can follow-up with an apoxied strut. We'll have to see.

Nice job TG!
Kinda reminds me of Futurama, but instead of Slurm advertising, its Gatorade! :D
Question: What is posterboard? Is that like foam card?

Posterboard is to foam card, as sheet styrene is to plasticard.
They're just different names for the same thing.

As soon as I paint my army...
After I finish converting it...
I do have one finished Fire Dragon...
Almost...

And then to transport it I need a car...
And a license...
Because I've never driven in my life...

don't make me find out wehre you live and drive your minis to the store man!

Don't make me find out where you're keeping all the pies and sodas!!
BTW looking really good. car bodyfiller would be an idea, thing skim then sand it smooth?
;)

Wait 'til my work week is over, I should have a couple rum mixer bottes to add to the collection.
Actually, I use
Apoxie Sculpt. It's what I have, and due to class, I currently don't have the funds to buy/try anything else. Anyway, it's really smooth going on, and sets hard as stone (but still sandable/carvable).

Nice!
Great terrain on a good budget. I love the use of the putty and cardboard to round the edges. You may also be able to use masking tape as a less expensive alternative.
Typhoid_Garry - February 12, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
Did a bit of epoxy work last night. After a bit of sanding today (more to be done) you can see how easily this becomes a wraithbone structure:

What can I say... simple, effective and made with easily obtainable materials. It's simply inspirational. ( which means that I'll be nicking your techniques!! ) ^_^
Keep up the awesome work my friend, I can't wait to see more. ;)

This stuff is fantastic. There are so few "Alien" sets, that it is great to see such a fine effort toward a unique table.
All of the tutorial stuff is really helpful. Thanks.

Finished one support. I hope to finish the second one by tomorrow, and get started on the main structure by Friday.
Ultramar - February 19, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
Excellent results!
The look is completely eldar-organic to me. It's good to see that someone dares to do Eldar scenery... :)
However, it just seems a lot of work to repeat all pieces by hand. Have considered to cast the basic pieces?

Actually, over the weekend, I came to the same conclusion. If I can wrangle up enough mold-maker to cover both pieces (sliced the original down the middle to make a two-piece mold), then I'll have this project done a lot sooner than planned.

Great pics, and ideas.
My wife just started collecting an Eldar army. So I will be watching the progress, and building my own version soon!
Thank you

very, very, nice. I think that I might steal some of those Ideas to make tau walls and buildings
