Title: The Tunnels
Description: ~of despair~

Venom had led Echo and Sorrow a fair way across the lands. The sun was shining less brightly and Venom felt a little less blind without the sun's glaring in his eyes. His large dark paws was aching, but Venom knew that he still had a while to go. He felt a little better when he found the cave he had once mistaken for a suitable shelter but had instead discovered a network of underground tunnels. He swung his head around to face the others. "From here on, we have to stay close. Even with our well-adapted night sight, it's easy to get lost. Make sure that you can see the one in front of you at all times." He stepped into the darkness of the cave and his acid green stripes began to glow faintly. "That should help," he explained in his gruff voice. His green eyes glow brilliantly and his sight cut through the darkness like a flash of light. He flicked his tail for them to follow again and prowled into the shadows.

Echo kneaded the ground in impatience. Did they really have to stay together? She wondered when she would get to explore the caves. Then she thought of a plan and flicked her tail in delight. As soon as Venom had stopped speaking, she would go invisible and walk through the tunnels by herself.

And, sure enough, she did. Echo flitted into the shadows of the tunnels and walked away from the group. She sniffed around the walls and looked for something interesting to do. She could hear water a little ways off and scent mice. "Lookie! There's mice down here!" she called to the others, forgetting that she had broken away from the group. "You need to get a cat, Snake!"

She ran through the cave until she came to one of the holes in the ceiling where sunlight seeped in. "You have holes in your roof too! We're gonna get wet when it rains!" She walked on and came to the river. And there she stopped, looking back at the other two. "Come on slow pokes! Let's get exploring!"

Venom sighed. He had had a feeling one of the following females would try to sneak off. At least Echo hadn't gotten lost. "We can explore," he agreed reluctlantly. "Even I havn't seen all of the tunnels before. But where we shall settle is a little ways off and it goes through alot of confusing tunnels. We've got to remember which direction we came from." With that, he padded forward to Echo and grinned faintly, meowing, "Well, where would you like to go first?"

Echo grinned and looked around. She hummed a tune while she thought. "I wanna go to that river!" she said and headed towards the sound of the water. She wondered what she would find there and that made her want to get there that much more. Progressively, she speeded up from a slow walk to a fast run. She could feel the cool air making her ears lay back on head. She tried to stand them up again, but she couldn't. She felt aggravated at that, but kept running anyway.

Before she knew it, she had reached the river. A hole in the roof of the cave shone down upon the waters, making them glimmer and glow. Echo skidded to a halt in front of the scene, dust flying up around her paws. She looked down and drank from the river, thirsty after her run. And, forgetting why she had even turned invisible, she faded out of the shadows. The light shimmered on her fur, like she was part of the scene of the magnificent river.

Venom had followed what he hoped was Echo, pinpointing every falling pawstep. She may have been invisible, but he could still hear her. He found the going through the narrow tunnels difficult, as he was the largest of them and he found himself stuck several times, only to wriggle out again. He heard Echo stop at a river he had never seen before.

A hole in the roff of the cave shone down onto the river and the now-visible Echo, the glimmering and sparkling light causing him to reel back slightly at the sudden light. Shaking his head to clear his head and waiting impatiently for his eyes to adjust to the brightness, he stepped forward to the river, peering into it's depths. Slim shape were only just visible under the torrent of water. "There are fish here," he growled, running his tongue over his teeth. He hadn't realized how hungry he was. It could wait, however. He now felt the thrill of exploring the unknown and shared Echo's enthusiasum at seeing it all.
