OUR HOPES AND EXPECTATIONS
What would you do if suddenly the world as you know it began to change? Well, it did for our generation. Sure, the government and its scientists knew what was going on, and they hadn’t bothered to inform us that things like global warming, and the depleting o-zone wasn’t our real problem. We didn’t realize how much trouble we were in until it hit, and hit hard and fast; a mysterious disease that, even to this day, we still don’t know anything about. Oh, we know what it does – we know how fatal it became in such a short period of time, but what we didn’t know was we had been warned. There are these beings, you see – being from another planet. They look…well, from what I understand they look almost completely human, but they aren’t from Earth or our galaxy even! They had warned us that the same thing had happened to them and the plague had wiped out most of their world. They had known about us, they had known all along whom we were and where we lived, but kept to themselves until they realized that we would be doomed to the same fate. So they contact us, thinking we would understand and take heed, but we thought they were the enemy! Our government, our own fucking President lied to us!
They ignored the warning and worked on figuring out more about these so-called “aliens” and all the while we were oblivious to our ever-approaching doom. Then when it hit, all hell broke loose. Some of us thought we could ward it off with normal medical procedures, quarantine, or simply ride it out – a lot of us died. The smaller countries around Europe were the first to be wiped out, but it continued to spread. Airplanes that had been in the sky that were contaminated began to fall from the sky, car pileups were a regular occurrence on a day to day basis, hospitals were overflowing and everywhere you looked people wore gasmasks. It looked like a battlefield – a real World War all over again – but it was human against an invisible disease this time, and those are definitely hard to bomb into oblivion! In a matter of months the world’s population was cut almost into half, and many began moving into the rural areas because the less people they were around the better chance they had at surviving a little bit longer. Then we suddenly got the news – Canada had been wiped out. Panic rose once more for those of us in the United States, and those who had fled here to get away from the plague, but there was hope.
NASA had been secretly funding a private organization known as NOVA that had, before the plague even hit, been trying to finish training some people to be “the first civilization in space”. We had known about the possibilities of having a colony in space, but no one had known they were so very close. The radio, our only means of knowing what was going on in the world, informed us that they would be sending the first group of survivors up to a space station that was to be the colony. The thing was – the colony could only hold a hundred or so people. We were to make our way to Nevada to Area 51 where we were all herded like cattle. While a lot of us, much more than a hundred, made it to Nevada a lot of others were too late or it was just too far. We went through a series of checks, quarantined despite the fact that it didn’t help, and filled out tons of forms, only for what? One hundred names called out over a loud speaker – tons of people, those that weren’t called, cried in despair. Mothers, daughters, sons, husbands, friends – we were torn from our loved ones, or at least the ones we still had with us. Those lucky few of us…we were brought into this bunker where two spaceships were ready to launch. None of us had any real training for life in outer space, but we were suddenly thrown into the galaxy. Honestly, we don’t know what to do anymore. We lost our homes, our families, our friends…and yet we don’t know when all of this will end, and what will be left of earth when we are finally able to go back.
