Title: LoTR??
Description: Who plays it?

Me and my friend (StPeter42) are considering starting Lord of the Rings, and I was wondering what you guys think of it. If I recall correctly, Grand Seraphim, Baranthazul and Woodpecker play it, but does anyone else? and what do you think? is it good?

I have played a very very small battle (around 6 models vs 1 model)once, but I don't actively play it.
It was fun, but that is all I can remember about it.

I never started LotR because IMO warhammer fantasy is much better due to the larger size of the models.

Lotr was good right after the movies. Its the type of thing that you play if you love the books and movies, and just watched them, and want to see some elves kick goblin ass. There are little to no tactics involved, and rather bland rules. If fantasy is chess, and 40k is checkers, lotr is tic tac toe (Nuaghts and crosses).

I have to agree with Baran here. GW seem like they are just trying to kick a dead donkey and try and get all the cash out of it now just before it dies. After the movies EVERYONE seemed to play it, and it was fun, but there is a signifigant lack of a challenge any more. I have to admit some of the models do look pretty cool though, and i enjoy painting them.

I would reccomend you buy the Mines of Moria set, and test it out. If you think it sucks, at least you havent brought an armie for it. If it dosent then go for it!

BOTFA (Specialist games) did, and always will rock though. I dont care if everyone hates it, i loved it!

i like converting my Umbar army but... the models are almost impossible to convert or position, each model has only one or at the max two parts (excluding bases and large metal models trolls etc) to make my 12 wardens of umbar i used 20 uruk-hai and 24 warriors with minas tirith, i took me 2 packs of green stuff and hours of care ful sawing and clipping to make them and i had about a ton of wasted plastic in the end, to make any models in LOTR i always saw the arms, legs, torso and head of to allwow me a greater degree of positioning but even then some (okay most) of the models arms were permantly attached to the torso...

and i havent even started on the overpowering heroes, the rubbish missile fire, the 20 turns per came, the high defence value and no armour saves (you can get a D9 dwarf lord...)which meens models with low D get massacred and of course due to all these the impossibility of any game more than 500 points lasting less than a few weeks and being quit due to sheer boredom. not only this but the unrealism of the models comparitive stats (Numenorians are worse than men of Minas Tirith, the Numenorian blood was supposed to have been waterd down by the time of the war of the ring not condensed) and the power of hoard armys, i meen elves can't kill goblins that fast (especialy if only a third of them are utilising that oh so costly shoot value) also whats up with only getting a max of 3+ to hit whats wrong with 2+?

i dont meen to discorage or insult any one but seriously? small games are fun but if you want value for your money fantasy elves, orcs and goblins stick to fantasy.

P.S. GS i love Morhiem and Necromunda myself
