Title: A tournament experience
Description: Angels first Tournie run around!

Grand Seraphim - July 13, 2005 03:23 PM (GMT)
Well after much bribary via beer and peanuts i was able to convience the organiser of the Worcester Park Tournie (yeah theres lots of players in my area) to let me use angels in the tournament.

He eventually aggread and distributed the rules for the angelic beings around so they could get ready for the tournament. He read the rules and said they looked in a playable state. This tournament is not exactly the level of GT but it can get quite Competitive so, here was the list the angels used in there very first tournie (it was 2k, all matches pithched battle. Sorry, cant get opponents lists) We may even get a boost in membership due to him sending out the list to every player in the tournament.

The army was proxyd with Daemons, with a few of my own converted models for the characters.

Heres the list:

Total=1998pts

Game 1- Skaven
Unfortunatly the terrain was a bit against we with most of the table providing a large "killing field" for the Skaven Artillaty to use. Thanks to the angels flight move though i was able to (carefully) navigate the tree line that surrounded the edges of bored using it as cover so realtivily few angels fell to warpstone fuled nastieness.

His army contained only a Warlok engineer to provide magic support to i was able to rule the magic phase. Several Comets of Cassandora forced him to constantly re-deploy his army, and when his only hald decent combat unit got into the thick of the fighting they were blindend into submission.

After this point the game became fairly one sided as the angels slowly tore away what remained of his army.

My opponents comments were that he thought that the angels did play well, but the flight move over terrain for almost the whole army was a bit over powerd.

(-Note, this guy one best sport for the whole tournament)

(Massacre- 20pts)

Game 2- Ogre Kingdoms

This board consisted of a lot of snowy/mountanny terrain. This suited the Ogres well and made them look rather at home.

It was fairly typical Ogre Strategy running full pelt across the board. My angels used there wings to there advantage yet again flying over terrain and over enemy units to get ready for a counter charge. A gorger popped up early in Turn 2 which threw a wrench into the mechanics, i had to devote the Vengancies to dealing with him, which left me flanking unit less.

The Tyrant burst out of his unit using Longstrider and Bull gut (probably my fault as i failed to judge the distance properly) and slammed head on into my Archanangel unit. He subsequently tore them apart as the rest of my army attempted to play keep away from the angels.

The Tyrant eventually got zapped by Uraeons Thunderbolt and the Butcher Burnt to a tender Golden Brown by Forked lightning.

After the Vp's were counted up it turned out a draw, not by much mind you.

My oppoennt yet again commented on the angels flying ability but said the army played farely. He suggested they not be able to fly over enemy units as this gave them the ability to avoid an entire army.

(Draw- 10pts)

Game 3- Empire
Okay. Less we talk about this game the better.

A very large Empire Artillary line. Gun, after gun, after steam tank, after gun. He didnt even have 1 combat unit i think. Added to the ability to that i couldnt pass a single ward save throughout the entire match lead to a lot of angel's lying over the field.

Opponents comments was constant laughter

(note- This guy got the score for the LEAST sporting opponent in the tournament)

(Massacred- 0pts)

Game 4- Khorne Daemons (NOW THATS MORE LIKE IT!)
This was a match i had been looking forward to. Lots of daemons vs lots of angels. I think this was the best game of the tournament, we really played our hardest, it was set on a Chaos Wastes table which added to the Epic feeling of the game.

The bloodletters fought toe to toe with the angels slowly wittling each other down. Thanks to the archers some of the daemons had already fallen before they reached my line meaning it was easier to banish them back to the warp.

Yet again Angelic Flight proved vital to outmanouvere the Daemons granting me a vital rear charge (even if it did cost me my entire powers unit to hold them in combat) on the largest unit of Bloodletters (25!)

Best part of the game was easily a showdown between the bloodthirster and my Characters. My Princedom and the Archangels charged in against it, doing some damage but were torn apart. Then about 16" away from each other, with nothing inbetween them the Ark Abalim stood un fearful of the Bloodthirster. He rose his staff as the Bloodthirstser readied its charge. The angel attempted to destroy the Daemon by calling down a Comet of Cassandora, The comet came and destoyed almost half of the daemons body. Unfortuantly it regrew its limbs and charged at the Ark Abalim, who was torn apart by the daemon.

Filled with rage as his masters death the Abalim transofrmed himself into pure light energe and charged in to fight the Daemon to the death. The combat went on until the final turn, with it clear whoever won thsi combat would be the victor of the battle. The Abalim was hit by a massive foward kick by the daemon sending him flying back. The daemon roared in triumph as it marched foward to deliver the killing blow. Swinging its massive axe foward which would cut the angel in two, The abalim rolled out of the way just in time before launching itself, staff first deep into the heart of the daemon. It ripped a gaping whole in its body emerging from the other side. The Bloodthirster roared in pain before collapsing onto the floor and melting into nothingness.

My opponent loved the idea of the angel army and really enjoyed the game.

(Solid Victory- 17pts)

Game 5- Vampire Counts (Strigoi)

A nice change from Blood dragons i thought. Playing on a green field again was fun and my ability to outmanouvere my opponent was defeated with his ability to raise more Units were ever i landed. I was able to slow a lot of his army down in Tree Line and his Black Knights were slowly wittled down thanks to missile fire.

It was a good game but after shooting down his general with Aneali in Turn 3 his army didnt stand much of a chance.

Yet again my opponent comment'd on the flying ability saying it can give angels distinct advantages

(Massacre- 20pts)

Game 6- Wood elves
PONCY ELVES! I would make sure they would bleed (still got a bit of Dwarf in me i think)

The game started well for me with taking down his treeman in turn 1 with the Aneali pouring shots into him.

The powers tore apart whatever unit they came in contact with as he was fairly unlucky in this game due to not much of his shooting doing any damage.

A fairly balanced game. For an elf. I emerging the victor thanks to tree lighting ability.

(Minor Victory 13pts)

All in all i came a respectable 12th, whcih in hindsight was not a bad result.

A lot of my opponents came up with the same comments. Flying. What do you guys think?

Love that you got to play in a tournament with it. I really hope that the empire player came in a lower place then you, because of the massive cheese that he was fielding. I agree that the flying is very good. I think that we should say that you are allowed to fly over terrain freely but not over enemy units. This makes it less cheesy as you can't just fly over and hit them in the rear with no penalties.

Woodpecker - July 13, 2005 04:34 PM (GMT)
Woohoo! Cool, awsome, and very exciting.
Flying. I don't know. How many people actually entered the tournament?

Eviscerator - July 13, 2005 05:20 PM (GMT)
the VC player got his general killed by a few bows in the 3rd turn?????? how on earth did that happen??? well done, and not being able to fly over enemy units seems popular and balanced.

Prince Senlaith - July 13, 2005 06:31 PM (GMT)
I support the not-flying over enemies rule. It seems to be balanced and reasonably fluffy, as the angels only have 10" flight they are not good enough fliers, nor are they able to get high enough, to safely avoid their enemies. They can't lift up very high. Also, if you're flying straight at an enemy, I think the desire for combat and tactical sense would lead you to crash into them anyway. Perhaps you could make a poll for it in the rules section?

As well as that, it's great you got to take part in a tournament, especially a proper, fairly serious one. I personally am surprised the store manager let you use it, especially with proxy models. It looks like you did pretty well, with two massacres and only 1 loss. If you came 12th it sounds like there were a fair few people in this tournament as well. Again, congratulations, both on testing the angels and doing so well.

Grand Seraphim - July 13, 2005 08:02 PM (GMT)
There were loads of people at the tournament I think anywhere between 80-120. Possibly more. It was held in the town hall (big place)So i did do quite well i think.

This wasent organised by GW and was unofficial tournament by other people.

Then again you have to consider i dont know how many people were playing fantasy (40K and LOTR tournies were going on as well)

Grand Seraphim - July 20, 2005 06:28 PM (GMT)
Any more intrest here?

Angel of Algebra - July 21, 2005 10:21 PM (GMT)
I am quite surprised that you were actually allowed to use the army, and even more surprised that the Empire army was cheesiest when Skaven were present. Good job though, and I do support not allowing the angels to fly over enemy units.

p.s. and what exactly is wrong with Blood Dragons?

AoAlgebra

Grand Seraphim - July 22, 2005 06:24 AM (GMT)
I think we have all decided to stop the flying over enemy units

Nothing nothing, accept they are the cheeseist vampires and EVERYONE i know plays them. :D
