Title: Use of SOF
Dark Angel - November 18, 2006 02:08 AM (GMT)
i think we should give the SOF a Ws5 with some armor or ward of sorts come on there a specialy bred race that is in tune with the fire wind of magic. aswell as they should get some combat skill the only other Ws4 is powers and they are just not as smart or elegant as us.

The problem with armour is that... well, it would melt? Unless they had special fire resistant armour (which throws in the question of flaming attacks, dragons breath etc) then armour would not make much sense.
As well as this, WS5 would make them as skilled as some races hero's, is that what we are looking for in SOF?

True, but think about everything else that is WS5. Chaos warriors, a core unit, even have it.

Actually, the fluff for Sons of Fire has no connection at all with the Wind of Aqshy. They are simply the shards of Seraphaal that fell into the chasms of lava that the coming of Chaos had rended in the earth.

Let's list everything in the Angelic list and it's Weapon Skill.
Cherubim: WS7
Throne: WS5
Princedom: WS6
Dominion: WS6
Virtue: WS5
Angels: WS5
Archangels: WS5
Vengeances: WS5
Powers: WS4
Cherubai: WS5
Anelai: WS5
Choir: WS5
Sons of Fire: WS4
Two things are below WS5, Sons of Fire, and Powers.
| QUOTE (The Celestial Tome of Sephiroth. P 51. L8) |
| From his mighty muscle and sinew came the Powers, to provide strength and creatures of burden to the Angelic Host. |
This explains the lower WS of the Powers, as creatures created for their strength would not be very skilled with a blade.
Sons of Fire wield flames and control the fire itself as a weapon, to me this requires a lot of skill. Since they are simply Angels, but on fire, it makes sense they should have similar stats to the Angels.
In short, I am in favour of WS5 for Sons of Fire.

While I could list everything from every army with WS5, I won't. :P Note that Chaos Warriors are only Core with a Mortal General, and if your general is a Daemon with any god's mark other than Khorne, or a Beast, then WS5 is restricted to your Special choices.

They are still core if you have a mortal. Also, eternal guard, 12 point, sometimes core models, have 5.
Swordmasters also have 6, which makes them even with elven heroes.
In other words, I say yes for WS5 of SoF.

Okay, I have listed every WS5 entry from every book I have (I do not have access to Skaven or Lizardmen, the older versions of the Orc and Empire books were used). Those marked with an * are WS6, but as units they should be included anyway for this comparison.
So what do we have? Dwarfs, Wood Elves, Mortal Chaos and Daemonic Chaos (Khorne or Undivided only) have access to WS5 Core troops. Wood and High Elves have access to WS6 units, in the Special slot. All armies, except Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts, Ogre Kingdoms and Empire have access to WS5 somehow in their unit slots.
Combine this with my comparisons between Angelic units and their WS, and I would say there is very little problem in giving Sons of Fire, as a Rare unit, WS5. However, I would argue this does not warrant a price hike, as Sons of Fire are already the most expensive infantry in the game, and only 2 cavalry units I can think of are more expensive. Plus, the fragility of the unit more than compensates for their potential power. This comes from the guy who had his Sons of Fire massacred rather early in his playtest...

*clonk* AoA hits a beautiful bouncer for 6.... look @ it go....
I think thsi point is finished. AoA has said everything that needs to be said on WS5. I'm not gonna repeat him, but i am agreeing with him.

A few things. Good to see some hearty, well thought out conversation take place here.
Sorry for not being online, one word, eviction. Need i say more? And yes, that Pizza was more important than paying the rent.
Okay, im erecting a poll so we can have a final vote on this before it heads into the compendium.
