Title: Is turn based dead?
necrofury - February 25, 2007 08:44 PM (GMT)
So, today I was reading EGM and read the article they did on the Dragon Quest series.
I was shocked to learn that in DQ IX the series will drop turnbased battles. So now FF and DQ (the two highest selling RPG franchises EVAR!!!!!11!!!!) have dropped TB :OMG: .
So do youguys think turnbased is dead?

Nah. I'm sure that other series who will keep the turn based formula. I really can't see a series like Shin Megami Tensei being anything other than turn-based.

Devil Summoner isn't. It's free-action, like Star Ocean.

I think turn based games won't be as common anymore, but I don't think its going away completly like welding games have.(see Monster Garage :P)

I was talking about the main SMT series. Devil Summoner is a spin off in the same vein like the Persona series and the two Digital Devil Saga games. They just put Shin Megami Tensei in the title of the game for brand recognition here in the west.

I know, I know. But it still hints at the possibility of change.

I think alot of the niche series will keep turnbased, but the more mainstream series will croos over to real time.
Thats all I gotta say about that

That probably what will happen, cult series can't afford to take risks with major changes because of their small fanbases and all.
