I was looking for a seasonal poem for a website, and I remembered the title 'October in the Railroad Earth', a poem by Jack Kerouac. It was first published in early issues of Evergreen Review. As an aside, I used to own several issues of the Review, including the famous 'Pataphysics' issue, until I donated them to the Scottish Poetry Library recently.
Anyway, I didn't have the Kerouac issues, and I couldn't find the poem in my books, but I've got it on CD, Kerouac reading with Steve Allen at the piano - one take stuff. So I've been listening again to the CD tonight, enjoying it. It has an air of innocence about it. Couldn't use it for the website, but I'm glad I had the thought.
