So I went to last Saturday's matinee performance of The Wedding Singer in Glasgow. We had full cast on except Jane McMurtrie was on as Angie instead of Carys Gray.

I went to the show knowing absolutely screw all about the production or cast recording except that it had been on Broadway and there's a film Nothing like doing your homework then I really enjoyed it. I did come out wondering whether Simon Lipkin would make a much better Robbie than Jonathan Wilkes but maybe that's just me. Nick Hayes shone as George and Jodie Jacobs was absolutely brilliant as Holly. Camille Devine was damn scary as Linda, I actually had to wonder at one point what the hell she was on Jodie Jacobs and Simon Lipkin shone in Right in Front of Your Eyes and made a really cute pairing.

I think the most important thing is that if you go to this show expecting it to be exactly like the film then you are in for a bit of a disappointment, it's really not the film. The book does run along the same theme but for obvious reasons some sections are just left out. I thought the staging was great, if a little sparse in places, and the original songs were excellent. I particularly loved Robbie's Song for Linda, A Note From Linda, Come Out of the Dumpster, Saturday Night in the City, I Told You and from the film Grow Old With You just because it's sweet and funny.

Choreography wise one of the sections that completely caught my eye was the use of chairs/tables on castors during Pop! It was a really simple thing to do but completely worked and made the scene much more than it would have been had everything remained static.

Natalie Casey was a good Julia but occasionally I found her really hard to watch. She pulls some seriously interesting facial expressions when she's singing and whoever was on the sound board didn't quite turn up her mic quick enough in a couple of bits. She was brilliant in her wedding dress in the I Told You scene though, she looked absolutely gutted.

Jonathan Wilkes was Jonathan Wilkes. He's a great singer and has fabulous stage presence but at one point Robbie did sound suspiciously like he was from Yorkshire I wouldn't argue with the casting though he did play the role well but as I said I quite fancy seeing Simon Lipkin in the part.

I'm sure I've missed stuff out erm...oooh Jane McMurtrie slipped off the one of the trucks as it came on for the scene with Angie and Julie just before I Told You but she pulled it off and the drunk in Single had a ridiculously broad Glaswegian accent which something tells me he doesn't always have but it went down extremely well with the local audience

Erm...I think that's it! Much more long winded than I intended sorry and I'm sure I've missed stuff out. Definitely worth seeing though if you haven't already.
