I have fallen in love with Light in the Piazza, and i was wondering if anyone knew any more operatic musicals, besides the already famous ones, (Sweeney Todd, West Side Story). I want to listen to something new, but can't find anything (and no Sondheim, because i love Sondheim and already have his "musical operas") Thanks! Oh and I might also add I love La Boheme and I think what baz lurman did was great! I wish people would do more of that on Broadway!

You may want to have a look at Sigmund Romberg's stuff from the beginning of the 20th century as well as Kurt Weill. Also Gilbert & Sullivan (The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, etc). Modern "operettas" and smiliar are harder to find (although some people argue that Les Mis and Miss Saigon are such) but check out Jane Eyre the musical as well as Titanic by Maury Yeston. By the way, West Side Story doesn't count as operatic. ;) It counts as a classic book musical, the term "classic" referring to musicals written between about 1940 and 1965.

Problem is the lines nowadays are blurred so heavily...

However, look into Jerry Springer: The Opera. It's a groundbreaking piece, won many awards here in the UK and is wonderfully offensive. There's also something called !Hero: A rock opera... Ragtime is pretty operatic... porgy and bess, of course... on the town... Beggar's Opera, of course...

Jackie O - The Opera (it's about Michael Jackson!)
Virgin - A Rock Opera (from 1972)
Truth of Truths (A Contemporary Rock Opera) from 1971 (based on religious stories)

Also, out of interest, there's going to be an opera of Brokeback Mountain in 2013.

I had heard this and have to say I am absolutely dreading the idea!

Would you consider Tommy a rock opera? That might also be your cup of tea...

Thank you so much! I will definitely check them out.

I'll remember that! I feel like an idiot, I should know that, I've seen it. I guess I just meant more operatic in singing style than in actual operatic structure.

I already have ragtime, great musical, It's really sad it's still not running. It is a phenomenal show.

I do know that which I think is stupid. I can't see an opera of this, why not a musical? I don't think it's going to work, but what do I know! It could be the next La Boheme or Don Giovanni. I just think a musical format would be better. But i haven't even seen the film, so I can't talk about it too much. (But can't you see the Headline Brokeback mountain the opera featuring the hit song "I wish I knew how to quit you")
