Title: Shows I'm Going to See

balaclava27 - June 4, 2008 06:43 PM (GMT)
Well, i'm going to be tight on money for the next couple of years because i just bought tickets to seed both Wicked and Fiddler on the Roof
Wicked is coming in november and Fiddler is coming in february (idk how i'm going to survive the wait) but rumor has it that Topol (guy who played Teyve in the movie) is going to show up and make a speech or something. Funny, i thought he was dead.

Any shows you guys are going to see?

I don't have anything planned at the moment. I am sure somethings will creep up on me. Will, of course, keep you updated.

In the last three weeks I have seen: Les Miserables, Spamalot, Wicked and The Wedding Singer

In the next six months or so I will be seeing: In The Heights, Rent, Wicked, Mary Poppins, West Side Story, Evita and a couple of other things that I should be remembering but have already slipped my mind!

that awesome! I wish theatre here wasn't always so expensive!
although our fringe is starting next week and that should be great i actually am stage managing one of the shows this year (volunteer, though :(, so i'm going to have to dig up some money to see other shows)

I accidentally went to Our House yesterday too - whoops!

Nice! Yeah, i'm at a dull spot right now for theatre right now...seeing it, at least.

I'm all showed out having seen in London last weekend - Sound of Music, Chicago, Spamalot, Hairspray, Avenue Q, Wicked & Margeurite...S of M & Marguerite only new ones though.

And recently on tour - Our House, and The Wedding Singer. And Edinburgh this week.....well plenty....so yeah no nights out for a while I'm thinking..although none of the tickets were full price but still really good, and Our House was free! Still, worth every penny! :D

If you’re looking for a really good show to go and see that’s new I might have a suggestion.

It’s a jukebox musical (eeek I hear you say!) But it’s one that's really worth a look. I was recently in the UK Premier of it while I was training in Glasgow. Some of the American listeners might know it because it was on Broadway for a while and had a really successful US National Tour but no-one over here really knows about it.

It's called "All Shook Up" and as you might have guessed it features the music of Elvis. The story is actually really good and works well with the music. It has just the right amount of comedy and actually has some really touching moments in it as well. It's not a story of Elvis' life and he doesn’t appear anywhere in the show, but there is the odd reference to him and the main character; Chad is basically Elvis in essence.

The plot revolves around a small out of the way town in 1950's America where fun of any kind has been outlawed by the town's Mayor. Music is un-heard of, no-one sings, dances, and no-one is allowed to display any signs of affection for anyone else.

A rebel named Chad rolls into town and introduces the citizens to Rock and Roll for the first time. By touching the broken jukebox and it begins to play Rock And Roll. The citizen’s suppressed feelings explode in a frenzy of dances and singing and everyone begins to fall in love for the first time. But not everything goes to plan as everyone starts to chase the objects of their desires only to find they are in love with someone else...who’s in love with someone else...who’s in love with someone else....you can see where I'm going with this ha-ha.

Anyway, what basically follows is a comedy farce, but it really does have some touching moments in it. The book was written by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, Your Perfect, Now Change) and the musical arrangements were mostly done by Stephen Oremous (Wicked, Godspell) I have to say that the arrangement of "Cant Help Falling In Love" is perhaps one of the best songs I’ve heard from a musical in a long time.

But yeah, since we did it up in Glasgow there seems to be quite a lot of amateur productions popping up around the country and it really is a must see....it does however, have the chance to be a bit rubbish, depends on the cast I suppose! haha

The production I was in was filmed so I'll try to get some clips on youtube when the DVD comes out, could be a few weeks yet though. I have the soundtrack if anyone’s interested in having a listen; I’ll happily send it to you if you give me a PM :)
Here’s a link to the shows website on Wikipedia for a more in depth plot line and details on the cast of the Broadway Production; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Shook_Up_(musical)

Anyone else got some suggestions for shows to see? Ive not been to see anything for far too long!

I've still not seen Spamalot or Avenue Q, what am I playing at? Zorro I just have to see. I want to see some decent flamenco, and I like the idea that they don't take themselves too seriously!

I'm probably doing JRB's Five Years Later next year some time. Does anyone know if that's on anywhere in the UK, professional or amateur?

bennyboy - August 17, 2008 10:03 AM (GMT)
I heard that The Last 5 Years is at The Fringe in Edinburgh. Could be wrong though and I'm a terrible Scot and dont know when The Fringe runs until...shame on me. Haha If you find anything about any JRB work in the UK post on here as its pretty rare and Id love to see one of his shows on stage havin listened to the soundtracks far too much! haha

I knew it was called The Last Five Years. Honest! It says so in big letters on the score sitting on the piano just over there. Is Five Years Later a film?

And is Spelling Bee on anywhere? I really want to see that.

our fringe out here (in minnesota) just ended and I didn't see a lot of the shows i wanted to see... highlight of this year was 'An Inconvieniant Squirrel,' which was hilarious. The show i helped out with, which was just a one night showing, had a good performance.

I saw Marguerite and wicked last Saterday. I loved Marguerite; I'm so glad I saw it. We only decided to see it because we could gets kids week tickets for it! I had seen wicked before, but I saw nearly an entirely diffrent cast, which was nice.

I'm planning on seeing Avenue Q and tours of footloose, Cabaret and Blood Brothers in the next few months. I think I'm destined to be broke :D

I am always broke, its not that bad...lol
