I realize that I am behind responding to this email but I am a recent devotee of your podcast so I am trying to catch up
Over this past weekend i listened with interest to your discussion (or should I say trashing?) of Blood Brothers in 2007
I saw the Broadway production in 1993 - maybe as an American i would view it differently - but I rather enjoyed the production - and I have been attending musical theatre since 1963 so I'm not a newcomer
From an American perspective, i found i had to work to follow the show because it took a trained ear (at least over here) to follow a lot of the dialogue - I've never thought of the show as badly written - certainly different from what the average theatregoer over here is used to - and I will have to agree that I did get a bit tired of the Marilyn Monroe metaphor (but of course now Legally Blonde uses a Jackie/Marilyn reference but to a much smaller degree) - I'm not sure I agreed with the comments but it did make me rethink how I felt about the show - and I sure hope i don't have an unknown twin out there that i might meet some day - that would be the end of me, I guess
One correction - you mentioned that Petulia Clark headed the Broadway production - actually she was a replacement. The actress who originally played the part in 93 was Barbara Walsh - who left the role of Trina in Falsettos to take the role in Blood Brothers - more recently she played Joanne in John Doyle's revival of Stephen Sondheim's Comany
Petulia did come in to perk up the box office - as did Helen Reddy - Petulia did the US tour with the two Cassidy brothers (not twins, actually half brothers) - and I didn't know there was a recording with that cast
I love the podcast - I listen almost every day and hope to catch up soon
