Here in the UK, we have a TV show called Room 101. They say imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery, so we've taken that format and used it for this week's episode of MusicalTalk. The aim of the show (based on the concept from George Orwell's Room 101 from 1984) is that you get to put your most hated items into it, so they may never be seen again by anyone. Join Tim and Thos as they try to pursuade Nick to banish their nightmares for ever into Room 101!
I agree that musicals got depressingly dark in the 90's and in the 80's. Some of the shows were actually really funny though and then really dark. For instance John LaChiusa's Wild Party is a tremendously funny show that ends with a dark twist. Chicago (which premiered in the 70's but did not get fame and recognition until the 90's) still runs today. Assassins was funny, to some degree, but if you see who won the tony award it always goes to a depressing show. And many of the shows who were funny and depressing (eg Assassins, Wild Party) closed down after only a short run.
Thank you - all three of you - for a very good episode - seriously interesting discussions, and relevant like never before - so thank you for that - and for the very funny outtakes!!
