Title: Computer Question
Description: Saving my site

stacyeblack - April 30, 2006 08:20 AM (GMT)
Just suppose I needed to replace my computer.

I built my website using Yahoo Sitebuilder, and have it stored on my computer. Should I store my site information on a disc or could I just install Yahoo Sitebuilder on a new computer and import all my information from my site? I got some CD-R discs, but I don't know how to use them. Never have had to, before.

I also have lots of other stuff stored on this computer that is website related...pictures, banners for links to other sites, my logos and banners, and such. Can all that be stored on a disc too?

Me neither. I burn cd's once in a while for music... but dont recall storing data on them.
Ruth is the pc person. :)

Hey Ruuuuth,

It's too rainy for you to be outside doing anything today... where are you?

Hope you are having a good day, whatever you are up to!

Hey Stacye, I'm finally back -- for a little while anyway. I don't know anything about Yahoo Site Builder, but I suggest saving your site to a CD. Things can get corrupted online. Servers fail from time to time, so it's always nice to have a backup in case your online version is lost. You could set aside a special CD just for your website. Each time you make major changes, save that version in a separate folder (use the date as a folder name so you'll always know which version is the most recent). It's nice to have the older files as a reference too. AND in the event that something happens to your website, theoretically, all you should have to do is upload your website.

Does this make any sense/help?

OH, and yes, you can store your photos, etc., on your CDs. If you want to keep a copy on your computer, make sure you select COPY instead of drag/drop.

Not sure if my previous post makes sense, but I hope so. Anyhow, just incase you need instructions--if you're using Windows XP, here are the step-by-step instructions:

Thanks for the link, Ruth. I'll give it a try and let you know how it works.

If you are using windows xp its really easy just put in a blank CD in the computer and it will basicly will basicly take you thru everything. Its not bad at all but I would definately back it all up on Cd. The only sure thing about computers is that the things you cant afford to loose are the first to go

Could I also save the contents of my favorits on cd?

I am going to try to save my website this afternoon at home. Didn't have time to fool with it yesterday.

Thanks for your help, y'all.

AMEN!! I can't even begin to tell you how true that is...

Turns out Sitebuilder won't import anything except from the server, so if I should have to replace my computer all I'll have to do is install Sitebuilder and import. I guess that leaves me at the mercy of Yahoo's dependability, but I've never had any trouble with them before (knock wood) so hopefully all will continue to be well.
