Hi Anne,
I am looking for a bred mare or two to start my little breeding program. I want to produce show quality horses, and not "junk." I hope to be at the Feb meeting in Jackson. Do you have any advice for someone just getting started?
Stacye
Hi Stacye,
When it comes to selecting breeding stock I think you have to judge the individual horse more than the bloodline it comes from.
Some folks feel if a horse has a famous horse in its background it will produce only quality and this is not always the case. Rarely will a horse produce better than its self.
So the best thing you can do is learn the basics of a structurally sound horse and incorporate that information into your own preferences as far as type and size and go from there. Visiting as many farms and shows as you can to learn what is out there is always a good plan. The pictures of horses you see in the magazines and on the website can be deceiving as they are quite often touched up and retouched.

Thanks. I never considered that pictures could be touched up! I see all of these beautiful show horses, and wonder what little guys are gonna look like when they are out from under their winter woolies. My daughter, Kayla, looks through MHW and picks out the ones with the pretty ribbons as the ones she wants!
I don't know if we'll even have time to show very much, but I would like to raise horses that could be an asset to someone's show string. In time, of course. It is SO hard to be patient.
