Please know that horses do not come with a Full disclosure policy, so that cheaper horse may have issues unaware to the naked eye.
In my experience, lower priced horses tend to be GREEN Broke (not recommended for BEGGINERS, even if they want to train one themselves), if broke to ride may have health or behavior problems. Therefore cost of health management or prevention may keep your checkbook thin. Not all horses have problems and not all people lie, but you wouldn't buy a house without a scrutinizing eye.
I highly recommend paying an extra $35 dollars for a pre-purchase exam to a local vet prior to buying any horse. The vet will do a physical exam based on your discipline interest (trail riding, jumping, barrel racing). Or you can have a horse trainer that would be willing to look at/ride the horse prior to buying, especially if the new rider has little horse experience.
I don't mean to preach, just don't want the Christmas gift to become more than what was "dreamed", for both the girl and parents. Good luck looking and hope she finds what she wants.
:goodluck

Angel,
Well Said!!!! It is very hard to tell people this with out hurting folks feelings. I think you did a fine job. Yes the cheaper the horse the more problems that arise later on down the road!!! I have had so many poeple come to my place to look at ponies (they all know the price of my ponies and most think I am high). They get here and then tell me that they are looking for a pony half the price!!! My ponies are priced the way they are because they are tries and tested. If you look at most of my pony adds my little boy is ridding them. They have also been put through the test of kids at petting zoos that scream, cry and kick. I always tell people you can spend that $$$ now on a nice kid BROKE pony/horse or spend half now and the rest in the hospital, adn then your child will have a large fear of horses!! Ok im off of my soap box now!! :soap :soap :noWink
OH by the way how is RA??? Have you moved him yet??? Does he like his new home if you have? i have a few pics when he was here to send you.

Since this is veering somewhat off course here in the classifieds, I'm going to split the thread and place the remainder in the "Let's Talk" forum. :)

When searching for the horse keep in mind that vets "ethically" can not tell you what the horse would be good for. That is a conflict in interest their job is to diagnose any underlying problems. 35.00 for a pre-purchase is an exam in my opinion. eyes, heart, general travelling of the animal. if looking for a 500 animal that honestly is what you are going to get.
Be cautious when an ad says the horse has slight navicular problems and was tested by a hoof tester? Navicular horses have been mis-diagnosed for so many years because of the inadequate use of xrays we had. they were not clear and all were fuzzy in the navicular area. Only way to be really sure a horse is navicular digital xrays. looking at a thousand dollar exam.
I would highly recommend the help of a trainer to look for the horse. there are 500 dollar good horses out there because of the overpopulation of our horse industry and the little no how of properly feeding and caring for them. Most horse owners look at today and not what tomorrow will hold. The I want this horse feeling comes out,.
If your friend needs help decifering the writing in the ads I would be glad to assist took a few livestock marketing classes and would love to be of assistance.
Just email me grittmanj001@hawaii.rr.com with any horses that she/he maybe looking for.
They are out there. What size, type is she wanting also, does the young girl want to show, trail ride or just have a horse to love and hack around on.
Again I would love to be of assistance in the reading the addys for them if they needs help the hidden lingo is hard to see sometimes when the price looks right. :)
