Title: Wanted
Description: Service Pole
WldHrtRnch - August 7, 2007 10:38 PM (GMT)
I need a service pole for my barn. I need the pole, meter base, breaker box and weather head. Runs around $500.00 I think. Anyone know of a good deal on one?

I always put together my own from what I bought at Home Depot.
Just curious, why a pole since it's a barn (stable structure as opposed to a trailer)?

Oh, and a 100amp should do you fine, unless you're going to run central a/c into it.
The Market Bulletin sometimes has used ones listed.

I :dunno everybody said I needed one, Southern Pine, builers. . .

I'm surprised southern pine told you that for a barn.
Apparently, they were confused. Seriously.
I mean, you can use a pole, but then you have the extra expense of a pole, conduit, and wire. Copper is very expensive anymore.
I'd suggest going back by there, explaining it's a barn, and tell them to give you a spec sheet for it.
Just my opinion, sunshine.

They know it's a barn. I've already told them that. The neighbors, both husband and wife work for Southern Pine and know what I'm doing. I've got to have something for the meter to go on don't I?? And a weather head?? Every barn I've seen had a pole. Yeah, expensive copper and stuff, $500.00 worth of expensive.
Joey - August 8, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
No.
When I went up a while back to pay a bill, I told them about my barn.
They handed me a spec sheet (same as a house).
I told them I already had a service pole etc, and they said either way I wanted to do it.
And yes, you'd still need a meter base, conduit (metal), wetherhead, etc.
But not as much to buy. The last pole I bought from the co op was 90 bucks, I think. Not to mention the extra wire to go down the pole, under the ground, then back into the barn.
Plus running the wire down through the conduit, a 90 degree bend, a straight section, then another 90 degree, then up to the inside box is a mare. Always was for me anyway, and I've done several for myself and family members.
Ask folks on here how many have service poles for their barns as opposed to wall-mounted meter bases. Or, look at your neighbors barn.
Unless they've changed it since I was in there.
Joey - August 8, 2007 10:34 PM (GMT)
I reckonj they could have told me wrong, but I've never seen a barn with a service pole. Have you?
WldHrtRnch - August 8, 2007 10:49 PM (GMT)
Yep, barn I boarded at. But I'm not opposed to asking. Sure would save me some money. And I need to save some money. What neighbors barn are ya talking about?
Joey - August 8, 2007 11:49 PM (GMT)
I dunno. I thought you had neighbors with horses?

Yeah, neighbors across the road, and down the road, and all over the place up here. I'll ask Stormy about theirs. I just thought you meant you'd been in my neighbors barn. I haven't paid attention when I was there. I'll ask & look.

Not unless she was cute and sweet, babe. :B
WldHrtRnch - August 9, 2007 11:16 AM (GMT)
Stormy said they have a service pole for their barn.
Joey - August 9, 2007 11:17 AM (GMT)
That's just odd and soesn't make any sense to me.
WldHrtRnch - August 9, 2007 07:06 PM (GMT)
Actually I think it is your choice, I do remember the girl at Southern Pine telling me that now, or asking if I would have a pole or not. That was a couple of months, actually several (5 or 6) months ago, so I'd forgotten.
Joey - August 9, 2007 08:53 PM (GMT)
I knew I wasn't completely nuts....
WldHrtRnch - August 14, 2007 08:26 PM (GMT)
well now I've been told that the meter base, wire, breaker box and weather head is most of the expense of the service pole. Pole is only about $100. Is this true??
I really need to get this done and get my electricity on. Help. Anyone know of anyone with a lead???
Joey - August 14, 2007 08:31 PM (GMT)
Lead?
That's true. Pole is about a 100, give or take. Has to be a 20' pole sunk 4' in the ground, with meter base eye level.
Thing with using a pole is the extra wire you need. Wire is expensive, not to mention conduit. Mounted on the wall, you won't need all that extra.
A dollar saved is a dollar that can be spent on horse stuff :D
WldHrtRnch - August 14, 2007 08:51 PM (GMT)
We dug the four foot hole right next to the barn, to save on wire. no extra there really. I think I do want a pole.
