Those Newsday subscribers... what did you think of the 12 page pull out section in today's paper?

Sort of neat, eh?

Webb20 - October 5, 2008 02:08 PM (GMT)
Yea, didnt get to read much of it yet. I'll read some later when I'm lazing on the couch.

I did see how it began by Johnette Howard saying we're crazy in need of psychiatric help.

LEDZEP - October 5, 2008 03:21 PM (GMT)
Isles are still undefeated during the 2008 2009 season :punk: :punk: :punk: :punk:

Got my sister sending it to me.

SPARADISO8116 - October 5, 2008 04:20 PM (GMT)
I ranted on Ms. Howard's article on my blog. Who the hell is she to slap an entire fan base across the face? Leave the writing to Mr. Logan please.

That is embarrassing.

Why would Newsday even approve something like that? It provides no insight at all. Just someones ranting on a subject they know little or nothing about.

That's the article, this is what I emailed her:

You know writing an article about Islander fans and not the Islanders is about as news worthy as you writing an article about your lack of journalistic talent. If you had any you would of written about the team, maybe even mentioned some kind of stats or some insight in to your insults. Instead you babbled your way through another lousy article, let me ask you is there actually an editor that reads your material? I know what you can do for your next article, you obviously should be taking ideas from random emails, you should write a story about a “supposed” news reporter. You can call the main character JohnnyGirl. It can go on to describe a talentless person who has no writing talent. You can then go on to let us readers know how such a person schleps through a career, don’t forget to NOT leave out the parts about JohnnyGirl’s alcohol and/or drug problems, hopefully the character has some vices to pass the time.

Cheers, to your continued lack of success!

edit: feel free to email her too!

After reading what passes as a sports article for Newsday online, I can only come to the conclusion that you have no clue what you are writing about.  Let me point out a few items to you...

1- the British did NOT settle Long Island...not even Sag Harbor or Montauk.  The Dutch did.  That would explain the Orange and Blue for Nassau County.  The blue represents the ocean and the Orange is the color of the Protestants such as William of Orange from the Netherlands.  I can see why you wouldn't know that.  It is only taught in every LI school prior to 5th grade.  Know some history before you try to write about it.

2- Remember the playoffs?  You mean the playoffs the Islanders were just in during the 2007 playoffs?  Or the 2002, 03, 04 playoffs?  You know, the ones the Isles played in.  To equate the Islanders with the Cubs, who haven't won a World Series in a century, or the Pirates, who have not been to the World Series since 1979 and have not seen the playoffs since the early ninties is completely off base.  But then again, why should I expect you, someone who thinks a mullet is a good fashion statement in the 21st century, to have an idea of the world around them?

3- Insulting an entire fan base for issues they have no control over.  Is that really what passes for journalism today, or is that what your new owner Ranger-owner Dolan wants printed?  I do recall a near decade when the Rangers failed to see postseason play despite the highest payroll in the league.  Where was your article insulting them?

Funny that you would insult the Islanders fans, not the organization but the fans, when we have seen Jets fans sexually harrass women at homegames, Oakland Raiders fans stab visiting fans and Wall Street execs do a great immitation of Rangers fans by having their soon to be bailed out companies buy tickets for them.  Where is your pithy take on them?

I will give you credit for this much.  Each time I've read an article by you, I've wondered why Newsday let such a talentless hack publish articles in their rag.  Well, this article just confirmed my initial impression of your talent, or lack thereof.

If you want to criticize the organization, feel free.  No org in the NY area is immune to accurate critiques.  However, to just insult a fanbase?  What's the matter, did Dolan finally turn his attention away from Isiah and realize it is time to now destroy the teams he doesn't own?  I remember when reporters weren't mouthpieces for an organization, but you seem to be comfortable in the Dolan family bed.  Just make sure Larry Brooks doesn't hog the covers.

I read the article this morning in disgust. I wrote her an email right afterwards. HAHA, I'm happy Islander4Cups and I pointed out the same historical flaw.

Here's my email:

Johnette,

Where do you get off? After reading your debacle about the Islanders fan-base (Published October 5, 2008), I can only think of one word: "Classless." No, I can think of one more: "skewed." First (and this one really makes me laugh), your historical accuracy of Long Island heritage is terribly off. Last I remembered in 7th grade, it was the Dutch who settled on Long Island, not the British. If you would like more information on the history of Long Island, Wikipidia is only a click away!

Moving onto the point of the... "article".

Your representation of New York Islanders fans is obviously demeaning and incredibly insulting not just to the National Hockey League, but to New York sports in general. In what is now Dolan's medium propaganda, the Islanders are looked as a black sheep of the tri-state area. You describe Islander fans as mentality unstable, out of touch, and sad. Here's a neat fact: there are currently more blogs related and devoted to the New York Islanders than the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils, COMBINED! To look at it from your misconception, yes...you're surrounded by loonies. Get used to it; we're not leaving anytime soon. Welcome to Islanders Country.

"To players and agents, the Islanders have become an NHL stop of the last resort."

That's a cute statement. Is your journalistic integrity a "last resort" from writing a decent hockey article or is your Dolan pay-stub clouding any unbiased judgment (if any) you have left?

As an Islanders fan since a single digit age, you have NO CLUE what "dedication", "loyalty", "passion" really means. This team is the only professional sports team we have to represent our home, our Long Island. Yes, we have suffered through the madness of a general manager, the embarrassment of a con-artist owner, the fishstick scar, and much much more. Are the fans responsible for any of this? I think we both know the answer to that. My point is you fail to point out the positive strides the Islanders are FINALLY making and you lack any confidence on WHY Islanders fans remain committed after so much abuse. We're still here, why else would you be reading this email? I'm sure you'll be reading plenty more.

Best of luck to you and your arrogance.

Maybe they will add a Johnette Howard dunktank next to the "Sign up for Newsday" table on Opening Night. fwiw, here's my 2cents left on newsday.com

What a quality piece of writing by Ms. Howard....

Are Islanders fans upset reading pablum like this that passes as professional journalism?

Sure.

Would we be more upset if this wasn't all so unoriginal?

You betcha.

Does anyone think this one-sided fake Q&A is a clever construct?

Anyone?

I am usually not one to comment on newspaper articles,we all know the team is on hard times and we usually get kicked around by the press but what the heck was that all about?
plus her facts are all off. of course we rememebr the playoffs, we made them the season before last!
now it is easy to take shots at garth, wang, gordon,t he rick , whoever but why attack the fans? doesnt she know who her audience is? is she that stupid? HELLO you write hockey for Newsday!!!!

you know what though, after a second read i do not mind the articles because this woman cleary can not write to save her life and clearly she know nothing about the Hockey.

they may not be great, i may criticize them..... a lot! but they are still the only hockey team i will ever love

Johnette Howard is an accomplished sports writer and author, but she is no Chris Botta, B.D. Galloff or any fan that follows our team.
So when we see these textbook potshots that have been regurgitated over and over we shouldn't be surprised.

She was one of the reasons I canceled sports illustrated subscription years ago.
Her editorial tunnel vision may be fine for moderate hockey fans,
but for Islander fans or hockey fans who follow hockey before football, baseball and anything else, she's out of her league with these clichés.

I think what stings most was that it was the first article on the first page. I cannot say that I'm surprised as she wrote something very similar a year ago and the year before that as well.
Only last year she payed us a compliment saying we were remotely relevant because we were a few games over 500 at the time while other NY teams were struggling.
But she still threw in the same token potshots at the org.

We get it, old news. Be creative and come up with new zingers and wisecracks. A big thumbs down to Johnette Howard. But I refuse to email her. Won't make her follow hockey more.
All that can accomplish is her writing more articles along these lines because she will evoke a passionate response.
