Title: Ladies and Gentlemen....
Description: The New York Arrows

Dr. Generosity - April 13, 2008 03:15 AM (GMT)
Not strictly an Islanders topic, but any look back at our championship days should include some mention of the Islanders' cotenants in the late 70s and early 80s, the New York Arrows of the Major Indoor Soccer League.

I didn't know much about soccer then, and know even less now, but I remember the Arrows did a hell of a job keeping the rafters of the Coliseum crowded with championship banners back then. I recall they won a championship just before the Isles did.

Here's a pic I found that shows the Arrows in their last season, with evidence of our 4 Cup banners in the background.

God I loved that scoreboard.

And here's Steve Zungul, the Mike Bossy of turf and "lord of all indoors," they called him.

Nice to have those clean, white collars, just in care you have to attend a dinner party right after the game, right?

Lastly, here are a couple links featuring other Arrows players and seasons.

I still have a couple of Arrows items stashed in my basement, pleasant relics of a bygone era.

I used to go to the Arrows' games. My father had worked for the Cosmos and was heavily involved in metro area soccer...anyone remember the NY Apollo (played at Hofstra) or the NY Eagles (played in Mt Vernon)?

Also, to all the soccer fans here at NYIC, get your USA vs. Argentina tix at Giants Stadium. You can also select the USA fan section. Messi, Raquelme...damn!

And there is a not so secret rumor out there that the Red Bulls will be hosting an international friendly against Barcelona in June. Actually, not a rumor at all - confirmed to me by someone I know who works at NYRB.

Steve Zungal yes, and his Trottier was Branko Segota.

Those two averaged close to 5-7 points per game.
Seemed like each game Zungal would get a hat trick and the team would score close to or at
least 10 goals.

Great game.

We may be a bunch of old farts....well, actually, YOU ALL may be!....but I'd be willing to bet no amount of geritol, viagra or other supplement would be able to match the intensity of emotion that this group of aged, creeky-kneed geezers would show if the Isles went deep into the playoffs! Just my hunch ;)

I remember the price of a ticket in the 300 level in the Coliseum was $6 in 1972.

Wow.....Now I REALLY feel old.
