Title: How Did Garth Snow rebounded from July 1st?
Webb20 - July 9, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)
We all went through a lot last week. July 1st was one of the worst days in the our history, or at least it felt that way to this Islander fan. But Garth and Co. have worked very hard since trying to build a solid team that we can be proud of.
How do you feel Garth and management rebounded from July 1st when we lost most of our top scorers?
puckhead - July 9, 2007 02:54 PM (GMT)
Good pickups.......but now the D now has to be solidified. While Comrie and Guerin will help, they weren't the top guys available.
Still, solid solid choices though.
IslanderQueen - July 9, 2007 02:55 PM (GMT)
Oh garth did GREAT!!!
now just a couple more of my favorites...
please :worthy:
puckhead - July 9, 2007 03:01 PM (GMT)
I think you have to ask yourself "Are Smyth and Blake combined better than Guerin and Comrie"? And I say while its close you have to give the edge to Smyth and Blake.
And that's why I feel we're not quite better than last year--------yet.
smittyrules31 - July 9, 2007 03:03 PM (GMT)
But Smyth was with us for how many games? Not really fair to say what type of team we were with Smyth last year cuz played so few games here. I like the pickups..if we land a d-oriented d-man, I will be very pleased.

Smyth is the real deal.........I don't care that he only played 17 or 18 games for us. We know he can play.
IslanderQueen - July 9, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
how many goals during that time?

i think he should have scored more for the hype he got...
but oh well
water under the bridge...
shark1000 - July 9, 2007 04:41 PM (GMT)
A D-man is coming. Don't know whether it's via a trade or signing, but rest assured, we are not done yet.
I was hearing McCabe is a definite possibility if we don't sign Sourey. Toronto is ALREADY at 49 million and must make a trade to get under the cap and fill out the rest of their roster. McCabe will only come to us as he has a no-trade and since he's building a new house on LI, he would approve the deal. Compensation is the issue.
LEDZEP - July 9, 2007 05:20 PM (GMT)
Great...Guerin, Comrie and Fedotenko were great pickups,
we have a better team than last year.. :punk: :punk: :punk:

I was mildly impressed.
I still don't see him as many others here see him.
He was a skilled, solid, hard working player. "Very good" would be my description.
But not necessarily a player to build an entire team around.
Hardlee Playinoff - July 9, 2007 08:57 PM (GMT)
There's still plenty of work to do to make this team a better team than last year.
We have to replace the level of production that we've lost with Blake. Two weeks in and he will be sorely missed.
A relentless fire must be lit underneath Miro Satan's a$$. Last year, the team carried him.
If we need to trade, trade the underacheiving, moody, streaky Miro.
Keep Asham and Hunter. Otherwise, we lose our grit.
acards - July 9, 2007 09:01 PM (GMT)
My vote was for Ok....This is a good start but we're still not better than last year.
My break down. Guerin,Fedotenko - Smyth,Blake . IMO smyth, blake better forwards
Comrie - Yashin IMO I am loving comrie over yashin
Sim- Ehh, third line forward.
We need to get a d man which garth is working on from what i read. A nice QB for our power play. And to replace what we lost in tom poti
DannyBinGeorgia - July 9, 2007 10:19 PM (GMT)
I agree with Hardlee Playinoff on two major points:
1) Smyth = overhyped. I don't know that he would have righted our ship. I came to this conclusion after he left, when I realized that I bought into EVERYONE's (fans and media) hype about how he's the leader of all leaders and he's gonna fix everything. I truly don't see him as that anymore so while he's a loss, he's not as much of a loss as I initially thought.
2) Satan's streaky A$$ must be kept in check all season because he is the very definition of the word "maddening" if I ever saw it. I also think he's pretty damn lazy.
Overall, Garth's moves were okay. I think we're .500 compared to last season's team. I'm sorry to say I dont' see us being that much (if any) better. I believe the most important and best move so far has been dumping Yashin.
Craving_the_Cup_Since_1992 - July 9, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
Good. We're much better than at July 1, but we're still a couple of keys short of a piano. Tank has to prove himself this year. Comrie also has to prove himself on the first line. Guerin is a great addition. Sim is a who-the-hell-knows. Sim might prove to be a good pickup, but then he may prove to be a waste. Sign some d-men and we may be looking at better than last year.

What type of point total you expect from him? Last year he did ok(17-12) but i wouldn't be surprised if he did score 8 goals either? After 7 years he had his best year in a contract year.
Cain what do you think? He would not have made my fantasy squad so i only know a little about him.

I'm looking for 15-15 from him - he'll be our Sean Avery, Steve Webb, Kevin Colley, etc.
He's not a skill guy - he is heart.
It's great (for me) to see guys come up from the minors here in Utah to play for the big club. Jon Sim, Richard Park, Matthew Spiller, John Erskine, and so many others.. (Theo Fluery, Chris Osgood) make it fun.

I'm not sure about the moves. Smells a little bit like panic but if Guerin can continue to impress, if Comrie can surprise me and if Fedotenko can score without playing with Vincent Lecavallier, then I'm positive about the moves.
Let's hope that Witt and Martinek is up to play a lot of shifts. And that they can do it without getting hurt. They, and Rico are probably our most important players when next season starts.

Webb20 - July 10, 2007 06:01 PM (GMT)
Originially I thought it was a panic move after not signing Smyth. The more I thought about it the more I realized this is a business, not my personal NHL07 XBox game where I chose who's on my team. Smyth is in the business too and looking out for himself. There are 30 teams vying for a few FAs. Drury and Gomez pissed me off too, not that we didnt sign them but they went to the rags. And then I thought that Snow and Co. didnt stand around with their thumbs in the air, didnt just throw money at the next available guy either. They continued forward.
I certainly didnt see Guerin or Comrie on the radar on the 1st. Will they lead us to the promised land? Probably not, but I also dont think this is the team we will see come Thanksgiving either. Snow wants to prove to the NHL he's worthy of the title, and I trust Nolan will work whatever roster to it's fullest.

A big question you'll be hearing now until the start of the season is "Did the Islanders improve from last year's team?" Now of course that can only be answered when the puck drops, and Garth Snow will be saying "Yes, we're better," and every journalist will highlight the fact that the team lost Ryan Smyth, Jason Blake, Viktor Kozlov and Tom Poti. Heck, they'll even say Richard Zednik to make it sound even worse. They'll point out that the Islanders lost a total of 149 goals or whatever the hell the number is.
However, I have more confidence in this team than in years prior to this. Why? Because Alexei Yashin is gone. J/K. Well that's true, but only part of the reason. We now have a team that is built for the new NHL. Garth has put together a team full of wicked fast players that will actually be able to keep up with the Buffalo Sabres and the Ottawa Senators and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Plus, this team is also going to have lots of grit, and there are maybe only one or two guys whose ability to give an honest effort every night is questionable. The floaters are gone, and this team has an identity. I think Garth and Ted have done an excellent job in the team they are building, and the identity they are building for the future. For a while I thought the whole "Ted Nolan style of hockey" was just marketing mumbo jumbo, but thankfully we're starting to see it. The team has not brought in has-beens or signed single players just to bring in some big names this summer and get all the kudos. They've got a plan. Garth has done a good job with what he's brought together.

I'm loaded.
I don't care, right now.
Let's go :isles:
I'll cheer my guts out when they drop the puck.
I'll turn off the TV when they fall behind (they always come back when I don't watch) - I'll go to bed elated, I'll go to bed depressed.
I'll go to bed an Islander.
And wake up the next day hoping for more.
I'll buy the damn sports package on Direct TV to see pre-season games and watch pre-game before Center Ice kicks in.
I'll scour the message boards and rumor sites for Islander news.
I'll continue to hope.
For one thing.

I hear ya cain. I can undertsand 4cupz. Early on i saw greatness from the islanders and since it has been a tease. Just when you think we are about to be the powerhouse again something happens. To me it was like i drove the Mercedes now i drive the honda. But i found out the honda is not so bad and guess what "It's me".
And i also will continue to hope as well. I'll stick with them and go to my 10 games a year and hate the rags as a normal winter comes and goes yet again.
Now i'll finish my beer and watch the all-start game.
Tough being a Islander-Mets-Jets-Knicks fan sometimes but I love NY.
Let's Go Islanders

Setting aside Yashin and the defense for a moment ...
The three forwards who went elsewhere (Smyth, Koslov, Blake) have a cap hit of $12.75 million.
The four forwards picked up (Guerin, Comrie, Sim, and Fedotenko) have a cap hit of $11.775 million.
The four new guys scored sixteen goals less than the three departures (85 to 101). I'd argue that the three departures had big years (in two cases career highs in goal scoring), and that can't be said for two of the new guys, who underperformed (Comrie and Fedotenko). I'd wager that the new four outscore the departing three in 2007-08. Indeed, only because of Sakic can I see Smyth's numbers going up.
If you can pick up someone to score Yashin-like numbers (or have present personnel develop), then it's time to shore up the defense. How Snow performs there is critical: that will be the make-or-break way to assess how he responded to these challenges.

having no hockey knowledge of other players/teams
i only say it as i see it
it felt like we took what was left-
it felt like we didnt know what we were doing
it made me wonder why no one wanted to sign with us
we couldnt keep the "savor smyth" such drastic changes to the lineup -(the line up we JUST got and we all got excited about) we gave up our top scorer and got an equally "old" guy
bottom line- yashin scored-
the islanders i got all hyped up for arent the islanders now- and we have no idea how this team will work- NO idea...
we know how injuries take out the team
we know how trades take out the team
no i dont know these new players and hear they are great--well one of them used to be like yrs ago...then the questions of why one year??? we gotta go thru more later??
i'm tired of the words
"needs to gel"
"need to click"
we were clicking...(or were we) felt like we were on our way??
now were back to square one
and i dont know if i wanna give a rats ass as much as i did....
yah yah
i know

just my opinion and what i think of the whole situation ok??? so be nice.. :D
