Title: Chris Simon
Description: Do we to re-sign him for next year?

Webb20 - May 17, 2007 12:45 PM (GMT)
We all know the history of the last stages of the season and suspension Chris Simon received.

But did he contribute enough, did he fill a role that we needed filled, was he the leader we expected him to be, and most importantly can we use him in our lineup next year?

puckhead - May 17, 2007 01:12 PM (GMT)
Though he was solid, I'd rather use the million dollars plus in salary he made to address other needs.

stevedepot - May 17, 2007 01:23 PM (GMT)
Chris Simon's leadership, experience and his presence (whether he fights or not) is a vital part of any NHL team. The fact that his team wanted him around after what transpired last year speaks volumes.

We've had many exhausting debates on this board about the incident and I will continue to be a condescending pr!*k towards anyone who says otherwise. No I won't, I've learned to hold it back, done writing stuff on this matter.
Some of you just don't know any better. :P
1 million? well worth it, a bargain.

Bring the Chief back.

puckhead - May 17, 2007 01:28 PM (GMT)
Let's not forget the suspension time he still must serve. How much time is left of that?

Webb20 - May 17, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)
Still has to be about 10-15 games. He served remainder of the season plus 5 playoff games.

IslanderQueen - May 17, 2007 01:52 PM (GMT)
 he is the icing on the cake

 bring him back

isleschick39 - May 17, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)
Definitely bring him back! Nolan brought him on all road trips for a reason...

SPARADISO8116 - May 17, 2007 03:24 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't mind seeing him back in an Islanders sweater for one more year. But because of his looming suspension he has to take a salary hit.

25 minus

15 - served during regular season

5 - playoffs

= 5

sybo - May 17, 2007 04:02 PM (GMT)
Leadership & presence are one thing, BUT he did a whole lot of seemingly nothing numbers-wise for a huge chunk of the season. I'll have to get back to you guys on this one.

LEDZEP - May 17, 2007 04:43 PM (GMT)
I want the "HATCHET MAN" back :pirate:

one lapse of judgement doesn't take away from what he brought the team on the ice and in the locker room. he got his punishment, now let's move on and become better from it

4CUPZ - May 17, 2007 05:49 PM (GMT)
WITH ONLY 5 GAMES LEFT

HE'LL BE A PLAYER

IF IT WAS LONGER

THEN I'D SEE HIM RETIRE

AND BECOME AN ASSISTANT COACH

i just hope none of our first 5 games will be against the rangers...

DannyBinGeorgia - May 17, 2007 06:05 PM (GMT)
I voted yes out of indifference.
I won't wail or gnash my teeth whether Simon's back or not next year. While he definitely was coming on strong toward the end of the season and he had a couple of bouts on the ice that pumped up the lads, I have NOT forgotten how worthless he was for a good part of the season. If he's an enforcer, I want to see something getting enforced. I don't buy into the intimidation factor because other teams frequently took liberties with guys like Blake and even Yashin (when Yashin was applying that rare russian mineral known as effort) with Simon on the ice. Anyway, we'll see what happens.

So long as we win I don't care if Jagr's on our team... Wait. Too far.

OpieAnthony - May 17, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
Is he allowed to participate in training camp if they do sign him?

Funny, I remember it the other way aorund.
Chris Simon was someone I suggested could play on a top line for us to open ice for other guys ( ie: Yashin). Yashin and Balke showed some chemistry and Simon was a good reason why they got the extra room, not just Blake and Yashin's streaks.
Problem is and many forget, Simon doesn't get alot of special teams play and our Isles took alot of penalties. tough to get going when you're averaging near 7-8 minors per game.

ahhh, phoooey.

yes simon should be back next yr,when he started playing with asham and park ,he finally started playing his game and getting pts . plus it will give on of the guys like frans to get more minutes early in next season.

Butpeople - May 19, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
There may be a split in the Islander hierarchy on this issue. Nolan backs him 100%. Got the feel from Botta himself that the Isles may not be interested in him for next season. His words were "But Teds a loyal guy so we will see".

I'm gonna just take a shot at this and say don't be surprised if Simon is back with the Isles but as a replacement for Flynn behind the bench. BUT, there is always a but, he has to feel that his playing days are over. So I think there is a chance he is back with the Isles next year, just not sure if it's as a player.

As far as Hill, I saw Hill in Champions after that bad Ottawa loss in late March. The guy could barely walk to the bathroom. That was with the performance enhancers wich he most likely took to help recover quicker from games. Without them,. I don't see him being able to last an 82 game season. I think Hill is done as a player. Unfortunate way for him to go out.

Hardlee Playinoff - May 19, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
He stays. I don't care what he did or what he makes. It's a Nolan thing. He's family.

EmptyNet - May 21, 2007 01:50 AM (GMT)
I like having him on the team. Just knowing when he's out there, everyone knows we have someone to finish what anyone else would like to start. That's a real intangible.

Just knowing he's out there, the other teams players who are on the ice with Chris

Will have fear in them knowing that at any moment......They may be beheaded :fright:

The Ted Nolan Foundation is excited to be back in Sault Ste. Marie once again to offer a three-day hockey skills development camp for Aboriginal youth. This year, Ted will be joined by Chris Simon who will again share his many years of professional hockey experience with young players. Ted and his team of instructors and volunteers, have designed a program that will work with Aboriginal youth to further develop their hockey skills and knowledge.

Ted Nolan is the president of The Ted Nolan Foundation and head coach of the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders. Many years ago he set up his foundation to help benefit Aboriginal youth and still today, he believes this work is important to the lives of young people.

I think this is clearly because Ted and Chris are friends and also Native Canadian.

Webb20 - May 6, 2008 12:27 PM (GMT)
I think that's great for the kids and for Chris.

Westfall18 - May 6, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
Don't get me wrong it's a good thing to have Chris Simon teaching youngsters...Hopefully, he can finally put these two strange years on Long Island behind him.

While it's strange, dont feel for him. He's still getting paid to play hockey, and lots of it, it's his choice to continue to play in Russia as I'm sure he could've landed an coaching job somewhere in the ranks from the ECHL on up, so if he wanted to stay here and not uproot his family most likely he could've.

He's playing hockey and it's what makes him happy.
