Title: Rate the Islanders - Chris Simon

Webb20 - May 17, 2007 12:42 PM (GMT)
Ok people. Lets start the controversy. Chris Simon was brought in for leadership, toughness and some offensive capabilities. We know he was a personal choice of Ted Nolan as they go back a long way together.

Chris provided us some outstanding fisticuff moments. He also contributed some timely goals.

However he will be remembered in 2006-2007 as receiving the stiffest suspension in NHL history of 25 games for retalliation of a cheap hit by the Ranger's Hollweg with a stick to Hollweg's face. Many many articles were written about it, it was THE news in the NHL for a week and cast a shadow on the Islanders that almost cost us a playoff berth with how this team went into a downward spiral afterwards.

Or could that downward spiral also be attributed to Simon not in the lineup for the stretch drive, or a combination of both. Also remember WHO handed down the suspension.

Remember Asham had a hand injury and Simon was out, so our toughness factor went down dramatically with the Islanders in no position to protect our forwards.

So before you rate Simon take his whole year into consideration and not just 'the incident'.

B is what I gave him.

In my gut, I feel he deserves an A and not just as an alternate captain either.

I know what he's done offensively in the past but I also know that he is capable of
playing in this league. He's a type of player that can work well on any line.

His teamates love him and there's a sense of security and freedom with him on the bench
and brings confidence. His playmaking prowess and goal scoring habits are still capable of putting up respectible numbers but most of all, his leadership is what we took for granted all year before the incident and sorely missed after.

Bring him back.

Webb20 - May 17, 2007 01:50 PM (GMT)
Steve I agree with what you said and gave him a B rating also.

I especially like....
His teamates love him and there's a sense of security and freedom with him on the bench and brings confidence
That says quite a bit when it comes to how well a team can play.

IslanderQueen - May 17, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)
i gave him an A+

other than that one thing he brought alot to our team...

and what he brings

is what i love about hockey

SPARADISO8116 - May 17, 2007 03:28 PM (GMT)
I gave him a "B" because I would like to see him drop the gloves a little more. We also need to be careful because the league may still look to further make and example out of him, so he will be closely watched. Every hit will be scrutinized (sp)

LEDZEP - May 17, 2007 04:48 PM (GMT)
A+

Captain Smyth - May 17, 2007 10:42 PM (GMT)
I gave him a B, I would like for him to come back, if he didn't get suspended he could of helped us get in.

CapeBretonIslander - May 17, 2007 10:48 PM (GMT)
As for his role(leader and enforcer with nice hands) on the team I give him an A, as a player in the NHL he is a C (talent and skill)

He is a keeper

Very fair and accurate assessment.

Given the right situation, I think is the Yin to the Kozlov Yang.

He is a keeper!

RockitHC - June 8, 2007 09:24 PM (GMT)
I gave him an A but I fear he might have lost part of his toughness after that incident. Not sure if he will be the same player.

oldislesfan - June 9, 2007 01:43 AM (GMT)

B+, ditto on everything Steve said. I don't think he's going to change anything about how he plays except to keep his stick down in the future.

Keep him and give him a raise.

B)

I gave him a C+. His timely goals were attractive, but that damn stick shot on Holliweg just lost all respect I had for him. I like an Islander team that can get physical and brusing, but that was just wrong by all hockey standpoints. Shows little respect for the game. Granted, the overreaction of Campbell was even more aggravating than anything else. Can we rate Colin Campbell next? I'd give him a big, fat skate up the . . .

3POTI - July 10, 2007 04:11 AM (GMT)
I gave him a c+, that untimely stick swinging incident, hurt us...the team needed leadership out there on the ice, and protection. I want him back though...he needs to finish the job on hollypig..

Snowman39 - July 10, 2007 05:59 AM (GMT)
I gave him a B.

Had the Hollweg tragedy (sarcasm) never happened I would have probably given him a C. I didn't give him a full letter grade higher because he clubbed a Ranger and known cheap shot artist to the ice with his stick. I gave it to him because it was very obvious that he was badly missed after his suspension. Kind of like how you don't know what you've got til its gone. Lots of teams tried to take liberties against us after that. Simon coming back is a good thing.

Played solid the whole year..............the incident though put a black mark on a solid year.......That's simply not acceptable. But he paid the penalty.

Simon will still help us.

Agreed, I scored him an F because his actions cost him the time the Isles needed him most (playoffs).

But overall, he's a very helpful player, and I hope he's actually around for the playoffs this year.

JohnSim - August 12, 2007 03:23 PM (GMT)
I'd give him an incomplete if it were a choice. For what he should bring to the team, he was an A - until he did the tomahawk chop.

IslanderQueen - August 12, 2007 04:03 PM (GMT)
 tomahawk chop

simon has to step up now with asham gone...

3POTI - August 13, 2007 12:23 AM (GMT)
I gave him a B. It would've been an A+, if not for the "incident"...But considering his career, and for what he did for us...B it is...GLAD TO HAVE HIM BACK.

Chris Simon....COME GET RYAN HOLLWEG'S HEAD.

Ryan Hollweg is an assclown.

Simon now uses the blade of his skate

Instead of the old fashioned swinging the stick as a machete

What is wrong with simon? Can't he control himself? His line played well and what he did was just plain stupid. The last thing this team needs. I liked simon but i have to say it now.

SIMON MUST GO.

I have to agree. Not only was that a bonehead antic because he could have really severed the guys ankle or leg had he not hit his skate, but he put his team behind the perverbial eightball again in an important game...although the Isles seemed to play better killing the major than during the rest of the game.

He may bring leadership and be a good guy, but he has some screwed up wiring somewhere along the lines. The league is really going to hit him hard due to the intent to injure and that this is the second time in less than a year.

Mezz.... agree with you about Simon except for one thing. I'm not going to cry if Ruutuu's ankle breaks. This is one of the premire cheap shot artists in the NHL. At least Simon was doing it to another not talent hack like with Holweg. However, I'd prefer if Simon was going to do this that he do it to Crosby for the BS PP he earned with his crosscheck.

The Isles need to send a message to Crosby and Pitt in the next game. Just F him up all up and down the ice. This guy has speared DP and then crosschecked Witt with virtually no retaliation from us.

You'll notice that every Penguin and the team trainer practically jumped Witt. It is time Crosby learn the lesson that if you are going to give cheap shots, you are going to get them back NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE.

And yes, I'm done with Simon. I was glad we brought him back, but he betrayed the trust Teddy showed him. Leaders don't kick.

You're right about Ruutuu...he's no angel out on the ice. What really bothered me was the If Ruutuu moved his leg, Simon really could have severed the back of his leg. Just a scary thought...

And I agree that Crosby needs his rear kicked around the ice. He gets away with everything. Atleast you don't have live around here and here how wonderful he is all the time like I do. I like to watch him play, but I'm tired of him being treated like a primadonna.

Where's Killer Carson when you need him?
