Title: Shawn Bates
Description: Do we want him on the roster next year?
Webb20 - May 1, 2007 02:08 PM (GMT)
Ok, today's subject is Shawn Bates. Do we try and trade him? Is he a good enough penalty killer to keep or does his injury proneness (is that a word?) make it worth trying to trade him? Do we have others that can do his duties or since he's under contract we use him when he's healthy?
You decide.
puckhead - May 1, 2007 02:12 PM (GMT)
Trade Bates for absolutely anything. Park and Hilbert do much better jobs of what Bates can do.
But trading he and his salary will be very difficult this summer.
stevedepot - May 1, 2007 03:25 PM (GMT)
Don't trade him, if he comes back healthy, he can be a big asset for us.
I think the frustration of playing hurt and hampering his abilities is what
contributed to his so-so season.
When healthy, he's a versatile player and Nolan type guy.
Don't make the Pirate walk the plank...keep him.

Steve I agree to a point. The injury bug weighs heavily on this in my opinion. If we again have him for 1/2 a year, then it's a hole when he's not playing for long periods and we either have to put unproven talent from the AHL in that spot, (which may or may not be a plus, but certainly a gamble) or we have to use up more cap space signing or trading for someone.
I know there are never guarantees about someone's durability, but given his track record will his position be filled by only one player?

Great. I just snorted coffee through my nose
I'm really on the fence as far as Bates. Part of me says move him and the other knows he can be an asset if healthy.

Shawn Bates, Do we want him on the roster next year?
=======================================
1. He must be on team next year.
2. Even with DP sucking or chocking in the playoffs
(whatever excuse you want to call it)
I'LL give DP a mulligan cause he probably still had a concussion playing
If THE MASTER was in the lineup we may have won more then 1 game....again.
THE MASTER

I agree to a point. Let him try to make the team. I believe in competition. If he is in shape, then let Nolan decide. But I wouldn't hesitate in releasing him or trying to trade him if it would make the team better.

I think that they should persaude him to stay in the office...... i like bates and i think he should be an islander just maybe not on the ice

He should fade into history. When they call you gritty, that means you are not getting by on talent. Name an offensive player from last year's squad with worse hands than Bates.

I searched for a more recent thread, didn't find so I'm putting here -- if this is a ModMerge, I apologize in advance.
Webby - nice one - "proneness" is definitely a word (joined at the hip with proclivity, I think).
More to the point -- does anyone have any sense of Bates's fitness level and idea when he's really going to crack the lineup?
I agree with a poster in the other thread about Bootland on waivers -- I would not mess with Bergenheim's role / sparkplugging Satan / etc....

I'd say he could fetch Garth Snow's morning latee, but knowing bates he'll pull something.

I e-mailed Logan the other day asking about Bates, he emailed back saying Shawn left the team to deal with family issues. That was yesterday that Logan got back to me and he said Shawn was at the morning skate, and that it will be hard for him to crack the line-up with Ben Walter playing well.

Having Shawn Bates return to the line up would add
That good vibe sensation every team needs.
He has the longest tenure of any current Islander and his team mates love him.
Plus he can suck on a mouth guard better then any player in the NHL. :argh:

DON'T.........CHANGE........ANYTHING!
There's a chemistry that's really working now.
Let's see how far it can take us.
If the time comes when we need a Bates, we can add a Bates.
NOT NOW!

Jon Sim has more points than Andy HIlbert :bag:

He wasn't valuable BEFORE the injury. Do you think he learned how to keep skating to avoid hooking penalties while he was on IR???
Bates is as valuable as ABC gum.
