We all know Shawn Bates only played a part of the year due to what seems like annual injury problems.

Rate Shawn on his performance this year.

Injuries would normally not weigh on the rating but with Shawn Bates, injuries and the number of games missed and must be played by another has become an ongoing situation for him and the NY Islanders, so it may weigh in how you rate him.

I have groin sick of his yearly injury & scoreless streaks....

I voted D+. Should be an incomplete. Not his fault completely.

I reluctantly gave him a D and that's not fair because he played through pain.
I agree with the fact that he should be an incomplete but despite his salary for the next 2 years,
I believe if he comes back healthy, he can be a plus for us.

Gave him an F for several reasons....

Not taking into account his injury issues, when he is healthy he is an F.

You have to consider the cap money he is taking up. There is no way Bates deserves 1.2 million a year for each of the 3 years on his contract. I feel this must be taken into account because he is eating up Cap space. Everyone loves to complain about what Yashin does to the cap, but the Bates signing is probably the second worst deal. Here is why...

1- Bates was once considered a potential top PK guy. However, Bates takes way too many penalties (and they are typically dumb stick penalties because he is reaching out instead of moving his feet on defense). How often will we see this from him? Here are his games played an PIM the last few years...

07- 48 games/ 34 PIM
06- 66 games/ 60 PIM
04- 69 games/ 46 PIM
03- 74 games/ 52 PIM

How can you be a top PKer if you are in the box every other game? Bates penalties come at the worst times, are often unneccessary and though I don't have specific stats on it, I'd be interested to see how many came on the PK, because it seems like he put us 2 men down alot.

He was demoted to 4th line by Nolan for a reason and it wasn't injury. It is time that the Islanders not only buy out Yashin, but buy out Bates as well. No one is going to trade for him...not with that contract.

The Islanders need to cut their losses and get rid of Milbury's final F.U. as GM. Signing Bates to that contract was an incredible mistake. He has regressed in each of his years on LI. After a promising first year where he had 52 points in 02, his points have decreased, his PIM have grown and his play has been inconsistent at best.

I look forward to the day we move Bates along almost as much as I do Yashin. Bates has done nothing since the PS goal v. Toronto and the game 6 fight. I'd love to see that effort and drive from him again. He was a hungry kid desperate to prove himself in 02. Now he is a 32 year old who has no edge to his game.

Bates does not deserve a (F) at all!

Give the guy a fighting chance, see if he can come back from his injury. Im sure he will come back and play hard for us. Last year he led the team with a shooting percentage of 15.8. Led the team with a faceoff percentage of 51.3., he finished fifth on the team in goals scored with 15.
He was a +13 this year and is a real good energy player especially on the penalty kill! Bates moved into sole possession of sixth place in franchice history w/ 13 short-handed goals. Remember the penalty shot, well it was the third playoff Penalty Shot in Islander history and the first to be successful!

bates did score 15 but how many of them were meaningful. i understand what you are tying to say but there were a couple of games where we were getting blown out and he scored. either way he does not deserve an F. I'd go with a C.

Just for the record I didn't give him an A, I gave him a C. He tried to play through an injury had some pretty decent games (the one against Atlanta where he had a a goal and 2 assists) and he had some not so decent games.

I think Batesy is awesome too! He will always get a free pass in my book just for that Penalty Shot against Toronto in game 6 of the 2002 playoffs.

I say let the guy earn his way back onto the team at camp. He at least deserves that much.

Plus, he's got a great sense of humor (witnessed first hand at a Booster Club meeting) and is supposedly great in the locker room.

The penalty shot only buys you so much time......should he get a lifetime pass for that historical moment? Absolutely not. Granted he's been hurt......but 2002 is a while ago.

I just feel Bates' spot should simply go to an upcoming kid like Tamby or Bergenheim.
