Title: Alexei Yashin
Description: Do we want him on the roster next year
Webb20 - April 26, 2007 01:52 PM (GMT)
Ok, now you rated him in the other thread, but this is where you tell Garth Snow and Charles Wang if you want him playing for the New York Islanders any longer.
Has Yashin's welcome been worn out? Can he contribute as a role player and not Captain?
Speak your mind, respectfully I want to remind all.

can a buyout happen "in season" ? Part of me is just a LITTLE curious to see if this guy can put up ONE good year in an Isles jersey. I mean, at least give us that for all that dough. I almost woulda liked to have seen what woulda happened with him had he not hurt the knee. Then again, I could live with an imediate buyout as well. Tough call...
Webb20 - April 26, 2007 02:01 PM (GMT)
Our best play as a team this year was when he was held out by Nolan for a month to make sure his knee was "100%".
It showed me we are a better team without him. Then we find out that Ryan Smyth played with a similar injury and played his heart out. It was like day and night and a real eye opener to what Yashin brings or doesnt bring.
I voted him off the Island.

No, a buyout can't happen in season and we've been there before waiting to see if this guy can produce for a full season.
I'm tired of waiting. See ya later.

then that pretty much settles it... buh bye !!
It's a damn shame...we couldn't get one notable season outta this guy for all that friggen money. However, I'll fault MM & Wang more for the $$$$$ issue.
dtonelli27 - April 26, 2007 06:11 PM (GMT)
he puts up solid points when he is skating which i feel Nolan can get out of him, i think we can see a repeat of of early last season next year and i think we may even get more out of him if we take the pressure off and take the C away.
Remember Kenny Jonsson always produced better when he wasnt wearing the C and that is why he gave it away
tonelli27 - April 26, 2007 06:24 PM (GMT)
This team played much better when he was hurt. For him to be on the team with or without the "C" is a waste of money and time. It is time for Yashin to move on or better yet retire.

I have been waiting for Yashin to be Yashin ever since he was brought to Long Island. So far it hasn't happened. I think I and every other suffering Islanders fan has waited long enough. Buy him out, save some loot, sign Smyth and Blake. They show more heart lacing up their skates than Yashin does in half a season. Build the team around two leaders who not only have potential and skill but have BEEN leaders.
IslanderQueen - April 27, 2007 01:41 AM (GMT)
oh he's a leader
but he lead our team to the wrong bench
he took them to the sit down & collect the money bench
Webb20 - April 27, 2007 12:32 PM (GMT)
I just hope Wang listens to the fans, his GM and his coach.
SPARADISO8116 - April 28, 2007 03:55 AM (GMT)
I think before I answer this one we need to know exactly what the cap hit will be and for how long. I heard something like 2.2 million a year for 8 years??? Could that be right?
Sal

I'll personally buy his one way ticket off the Island. He's a nice guy and says all the right things, but the Isles can use that cap space for others players. He is not worth his 6-7 mill/season.
See ya...

http://www.onfrozenblog.com/2007/08/14/new...and-in-the-way/saw this on hockeybuzz, an interview with kozlov, questions and ans. on yashin, if anyone is interested.
But maybe Alexei Yashin is right that he came back to Lokomotiv?
I am absolutely sure that Yashin’s career will take off in the Superleague. I remember the way he was treated by the Islanders. I was present at all those scuffles myself. I saw how they treated him when he was playing through the pain with injured knees.
Did Yashin become a hostage of his mega-contract?
If he was making not seven, but three million dollars a year, no one would expect miracles from him. Moreover, Alexei still provided miracles, when his health permitted him! And everyone was happy with him. But as soon as Yashin got injured, he came under pressure: “Go out there and play.” But how is it possible if you can’t stand on your own two feet?
Why did the coach bench him in the playoffs?
Because he expected a lot of him, but didn’t give him a lot of minutes. Nevertheless, all blame was placed on Yashin, who was considered the star of the Islanders… it is sad to see what is happening to the Islanders. I don’t understand why they strengthened the team last year if all quality players were given away this offseason. Nothing has been gained! Ryan Smyth came over via trade from Edmonton, but he was allowed to leave for Colorado this summer. They couldn’t keep Blake, bought out Yashin’s contract, Poti and Hill left… But we were in the playoffs; there was bright future ahead of us.
So what happened? The players are running away from the Islanders?
A lot of players wanted to stay. Blake, for example, didn’t even think about changing teams. But how can it be done when a good contract is not offered? I was promised a small raise over the last contract [Kozlov was making $865,000 while he scored 25+26=51 points in 81 games]. But it did not correspond to my stats at all. In the end I left for Washington, the club offered me great terms [2 years, $5M]. I like that the team is young and hungry for success. I don’t want to make predictions, but I think that Washington will have a great season.

Ugh.
Didn't enjoy reading that.
nolanforprez - August 18, 2007 12:38 AM (GMT)
All this coming from a guy who has been an underachiever since he began his career. The only reason he got that contract was because of Teddy Nolan and the confidence he showed him last year, And let's not forget Kozlov and Yashin are good friends, so take everything he says with a grain of salt. Hey Viktor have fun in Washington, I don't like to make predictions but the Isles are better off without you. Nice knowing you.
Let's go Islanders!!!!!!!!!
Webb20 - August 18, 2007 02:55 PM (GMT)
And you're reading only from a players perspective. You dont hear the clubs reasons or the fans reasons of why they turned on Alexei.
This.....
Why did the coach bench him in the playoffs?
Because he expected a lot of him
we all expected alot from him. Minutes? If Coach thought he was getting quality minutes from him he would've had more.
Enough about Yashin and Blake. Those chapters have closed without a very good legacy. Somewhere between the dark ages '95-2000 and '88-'92 is where I'd put it.

you can't blame the man for talking. there is truth in what he's said there.
we've said it all ourselves.
and I didn't want to see him go either.
they did have a good team last season. it had potentional.
now... we're starting from square one.
it doesn't make sense to me either.

7th, I dont think last years or any of Yashin's teams here had any chance of doing any better than how they did. If we want to get out of the first round we needed a new leadership and new direction. Your patience will be well worth it.
Just think, the first time since before MM, it's the players that got the boot, not the coach. I know it's the right course. Has to be better than the rudderless ship we've seen thoughout Milbury's tenure, and what?, 6, 7 coaches ( :dontknow: too tired to count them up) .
nolanforprez - August 18, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
Webb I couldn't agree with you more. Last years team did about as well as they could with the personel. Also let's not forget the guys that were the nucleus of that push are still around. Witt, Sillinger,Hunter,Dp and Dubie. Yes we lost some players but by no means are we starting from square one. 7th i respect your opinion and that of the people on this board, but this team is better than last years. Now that's not to say they are an automatic playoff team there is still alot work to be done and many non playoff teams have improved. But the makings of a solid team are there, and with alot of cap space still available, the team is in a good position to add now, or next year when the ufa crop is loaded. Kozlov is entilted to his position, but last year nobody was knocking down the door to get him. The isles gave him a chance and he did well, but he's not worth the money the caps gave him. He takes to many nights off, and Nolan wants effort every night. The team we have now will give us fans something to cheer about because they will give there all. That's all we can ask for.

Bring Yashin back, as an enforcer. Now there is a goon who can score!
