Title: Arron Asham
Description: Do we want him on the roster next year

Webb20 - April 23, 2007 03:14 PM (GMT)
Help the Islanders Management shape next years roster from a fans support point of view. Obviously the Islanders are going to build a roster based on what's available, what budget we have to work with and how much someone will cost, but at least they can find out ahead of time if the player is WANTED by the fans.

First up Arron Asham.

stevedepot - April 23, 2007 03:18 PM (GMT)
HELL yeah...keeper!

shark1000 - April 23, 2007 03:29 PM (GMT)
He's obviously a free agent and can go anywhere, but I don't think he would command a lot of money so I would 100% keep him at the $1 to $1.5 mil price tag.

I think there's a reasonable chance he'll be back.

puckhead - April 23, 2007 03:32 PM (GMT)
I only say he's a keeper if he comes at a REASONABLE cost. Love his toughness but I'd love to see him use his shot more because he can definitely shoot the puck.

absolutely...
hell...
even scored when we needed him too!

totallypucked - April 23, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)
I think Arron and Chris Simon should basically be turned into one player, since fighting has dropped so significantly. If Arron is kept on as that one tough guy who can also score more than once a season, then great. The one thing I don't like about Asham is that sometimes it seems like he plays as if he thinks he's a first liner, I like him more when he's hitting everything in sight and playing tough, which he didn't all the time this season. I know he had the broken hand apparently, but he's more effective when he plays with an edge.

It seems like teams, specifically the Devils and Rangers, are turning to more middleweight goons that also run around and hit everything, with Cam Janssen and Ryan Hollweg, over the traditional heavyweights that are on the ice simply to make appointments to fight and then sit on the bench for the rest of the game. I would like to see the Islanders emloy someone more on that mold, as they had with Steve Webb and Kevin Colley.

We have the total package in Trent Hunter and we also have Asham.
janssen and hollpig sit alot because they cannot be trusted defensively.

I voted no. I like asham and what he brought this year, but in the end he was too streaky, we couldnt find a spot for him, and didnt fight enough. Bergenheim is comming up next season, who plays as hard as asham with the same physical edge and is a better scorer, plus any UFA's that we happen to sign (Fingers crossed for Drury/Briere). I liked asham but i dont see a spot for him on our roster next season.

TBS, wherever he goes i will wish him luck (with one exception of course) and have no hard feelings twoards asham. He gave it his all every game and i believe is simply the odd man out here.

(Fingers crossed for Drury/Briere)

I'm sure Buffalo will retain ONE of them.

Drury lives (or grew up I forget) near Bridgeport so maybe location helps us.

The bottom line is, if we can't retain Asham, or Blake, or Smyth, we still need to go out and spend money and get competent replacements. Drury would certainly be one of those players who can help us. I'm not saying don't make an attempt to sign these guys, but life has to go on if they go elsewhere.

Adrian Aucoin was great for us, but we weren't willing to match Chicago's offer and we were right in doing so. Now he's wasting away in Chicago.

We all get attached to certain players, but this is professional sports and free agency is apart of life in pro sports.

Do I want Blake back? Ofcourse, and we should do our best to make that happen, but if he gets 4 mil for 5 years from another team, I'm sorry, we must move on.

This is going to be a wild offseason. We have a number of free agents. We have possible trade options (Satan). We have a possible buyout (Yashin). We have NO 1st or 2nd round draft pick (refer back to possible trade options). We have an enforcer who has some scoring potential (Asham).

Let's see what happens.

dtonelli27 - April 23, 2007 04:59 PM (GMT)
I voted no, i love the guy and what he brings when he decides to. He is considered a tough guy,but his hand or wrist has been injured for the last 2 seasons. I feel like he never took on his role of being the tough guy and standing up for his team mates like a person in his role should. When he was on the 4th line i believe he did his job of giving energy, but when you moved him up to fill in some spots through out the season, in my opinion it went to his head and he became a 1 dimensional player, which in his mind was a goal scorer. He did come in clutch a couple of times and as i said i love this guy i just feel that his injury has held him back and we can find another player at a similar price to take his place. Trent Hunter is the player we have for the spot that Asham feels he should play, i think we need that person who is constantly hitting and standing up for their team mates.

Just my 2 cents

bvon44 - April 23, 2007 07:19 PM (GMT)
If he signs for less than 1 million then heck yeah, keep him on the roster. Anything more than that for a 4th liner is too much (see Shawn Bates)

4CUPZ - April 23, 2007 07:36 PM (GMT)
OH HE'LL BE BACK

HE'S ONE OF TEDDYS BOYS

HE DOES WHAT IS ASKED OF HIM

BE IT AN ENFORCER ROLL

4TH LINER

1ST LINE FILL IN

POWERPLAY FILL IN

YOU TELL HIM HE DOES IT

AND HE'S BECOME ONE OF THE FACES

OF THE ISLANDERS FOR INTERVIEWS AND SUCH

Keep him. Don't know if he has earned a long-term deal yet, but he has a WICKED slap shot, toughness and some skills.

Captain Smyth - April 23, 2007 10:34 PM (GMT)
I love Arron and hopefully he can stay here for awhile, I say give him a 2-3 year deal.

Islanderfan4life84 - April 23, 2007 10:58 PM (GMT)
I wish Asham would use that nasty shot of his more often. Hopefully we can lock him up.

drivefor5 - April 23, 2007 11:49 PM (GMT)
Sign him

Asham has to shoot more.

Thats basically it..

And as for fighting goes, there is rarely a fight in the NHL these days. I say that fighting would be even less say 4-5 years from now. And plus, Asham had a broken hand, so technically, he couldnt fight.

The Third Man - April 24, 2007 12:26 AM (GMT)
For about 1 million, he's a good deal. The odd fight and the odd goal on this truly odd team. A match made in heaven.

Webb20 - April 24, 2007 11:08 AM (GMT)
I bet he takes the same in salary and signs for 1 year. Like CUPZ said no need for more, 1 at a time.

No 4th liner should be signed for more than 1 year. It's your most transient line and where changes happen the most. Same for 3rd liners, it changes so much and so fast sometimes you dont want to be stuck with some one-eyed guy for 3 years.

4CUPZ - April 24, 2007 12:08 PM (GMT)
THE WAY THINGS HAVE CHANGED IN THE NHL

THE ONLY ONES WHO SHOULD GET MULTI-YEAR CONTRACTS

ARE THE "THE PRODUCERS"

EVERYONE ELSE CAN BE REPLACED

BY SOMEONE MORE THAN WILLING

AND WILLING TO DO IT CHEAPER ALSO

GIVE ME 2 LINES OF PRODUCERS

AND 2 HUNGRY LINES OF 1 YEAR WONDERS

THAT WOULD KEEP THE COMPETITIVE JUICES FLOWING

The Islanders' wing spreads joy to cancer-stricken kids at Sunrise Day Camp

At first glance, Sunrise Day Camp seems like your typical day camp on Long Island. However, it's not the infrastructure of the camp that sets it apart from the other day camps, it's the kids that inhabit its borders.

Sunrise Day Camp is the only day camp on the East Coast designed for kids with cancer. And over the weekend, Arron Asham joined Sparky and the Ice Girls to visit the beautiful campus on the Nassau-Suffolk border.

Asham shared a smile with the dozens of 3-16 year-olds who flooded the 300-acre Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds. The Islanders' right wing toured the camp before signing autographs for the kids, who huddled around him in droves.

"It's great to be out in the community and spend time with these kids," said Asham. "It's inspiring to see them going about their daily lives with so much joy. I was telling some of them as they came up to me that with hard work, you can overcome anything."

Also on hand were the Ice Girls and Sparky, who were, naturally, hits. When the kids weren't participating in the Islanders slapshot booth or winning prizes they could be seen surrounding Sparky and snapping pictures with the Ice Girls.

Taking a look around the camp, the kids were scattered about, enjoying themselves on the rock climbing wall, in the arts center or taking a leisurely ride in the trolley that circled the campus.

"This is such a special place," said Arnie Preminger, the Sunrise Day Camp Executive Director. "Here kids with cancer can go about their lives knowing that everyone here is behind them. Today has been extra special because the Islanders were here, and it's been terrific."

While the camp has many of the usual accessories that a regular day camp possesses, it also has a special medical facility, allowing it to house kids that are going through difficult times, such as radiation treatment.

"This camp gives these kids an opportunity to not feel ostracized and play with other kids who are going through the same problems," said Camp Director Michelle Vernon. "This is a wonderful organization to support, and we're glad the Islanders are part of it."

I would think he'd be an easy signing and would've happened already.

Aaron, just in case you dont sign, thanks :hello:

asham45 - July 29, 2007 06:07 AM (GMT)
me i think asham is a very important part of the islanders, arron and chris were playing a good 4th line until chris got hit from behind.then coach nolan played him out of position,i can garantee simon ,park and asham if they are a line this year, they will the the most feared, and most pts scored for.as per 4th liners.

Tinman31 - July 29, 2007 06:35 AM (GMT)
He is not even near a top priority.

The fact is many people think he will be gone, I am one of them. When you start looking at forwards and guys that lead to playoff teams etc, he looks to be odd man out.

Hydroponix18 - July 29, 2007 07:06 AM (GMT)
Garth time to move on, he had his chance.... why bring him back? and to knock off who, tamby? GTF outta here

asham45 - July 29, 2007 08:54 AM (GMT)
man you idoits must love figure skating and 1.2 mill on oft injured bates. be real.asham has more value being a 4th liner, then tamby playing forth,if he can play in this league, forth liner aint his postion.

asham45 - July 29, 2007 08:59 AM (GMT)
as coach says if you can't play your position, stay in the minors. if and when asham signs and he does the beat down on any1 from buffalo, you figure skaters will see his value. :argh:

First off, if someone does not agree with you, they must be an idiot?

Asham was a solid player for NYI the past few years. The problem is that he is not talented enough for a role on the top 2 lines, not a good enough defensive forward to play on a checking line, and not consistent enough with his physical game (not to mention overpaid) for a 4th liner. You take a shot at Bates who is overpaid as a 4th liner at 1.2, yet Asham is seeking a contract in that neighborhood also. While Arron is a good middleweight with some skill, he is not worth that type of money.
