Title: If we win tonight, will you start believing
Description: WE CAN MAKE THE PLAYOFFS?

Snowday - November 2, 2009 03:23 PM (GMT)
Because the East is not that great, I'm starting to believe this team can push for a playoff spot IF Garth is willing to add a piece or two by The deadline. Hopefully a defender and winger. :letssee:

I've never seen anyone overreact more to threads than you. Isn't that what this place is for? If you don't want to see new threads everyday, go to Islandermania. :moon:

I'm never a fan of a poll with the word IF in it. That said I'll still need more convincing before I can vote yes. Hopefully we continue to play good hockey and make strides.

You have 2 yes answers in a yes/no question.

This should be a weekly poll, and based on each weeks results we can graph the progress of the rebuild.

Islander4cups - November 2, 2009 05:23 PM (GMT)
No. I will not and here is why.

We haven't even reached Thanksgiving. Other than Doug Weight with the H1N1, have we lost any manpower to injury yet? Based on this team's recent track record, and the fact that it is a long season, we are going to lose someone and probably several someones.

2- We have to go on this nice run just to get into the playoff picture. And it is Nov 3. Will we be able to sustain this sort of play for the next 4 months? I doubt it with out defense.

3- The only "deadline" deal we make better involve getting something for very little. Frankly, I'd love to get one of the soon to be castoffs from Chicago, but they are in a bind so I wouldn't give any of our top prospects. I might give Trevino and Ness for Barker, but they won't be able to keep him anyway. If we are "rebuilding" then we don't throw away a ton of prospects on guys who are rentals for just a "playoff push". We go after someone who can be a contributor for 6 years.

There are the ones who always thought we were a playoff team. Ones who NOW think we can be a playoff team. And the ones who still think we have no chance.

I'm just trying to separate them all in the poll.

I always thought it was simple.

WIN Games = Playoffs

WIN Playoff Games = :cup:

Simple.

Jackace - November 2, 2009 07:25 PM (GMT)
With the makeup of this roster, there is no way this team is a playoff team...yet. Maybe next year with some help from Snow. I just want quantitative improvement in play and the standings. I stand by my prediction we will be a bottom 5-8 team with a lottery pick. Draft more talent and sign some UFAs next year.

Actually, sybo is correct. You cannot just make a new thread every time a new thought pops into your head. This thread is fine, but you've made a few others that were extremely pointless and a waste of everyone else's time. I don't start all too many threads so I like it when other people do, but has to be done within reason.

Talk to me in January about this playoff crap.

Unreal how we're even discussing it right now.

Will we face Pitt or the rags in the 2nd round :letssee:

That's my biggest concern at this point :goofy2:

3POTI - November 3, 2009 04:07 AM (GMT)
absolutely not....come on now...this team still sucks. yeah yippee they are winning games. a great confidence booster. But they are finally doing things what the coach wants....skating and working. Like someone else said, there is a flu bug going around..eventually its going to hit us. The people that think we seriously going to contend for the playoffs, are really delusional. Your just getting your hopes, only to piss and moan when you start losing again. Mark my words not only will we not get into the playoffs, but we'll be out of it Christmas.

Hall or Fowler here we come.

Feeling awfully cheery today, aren't we, 3POTI? :yea:

I don't think we'll make the playoffs, but I won't rule it out. I'll give it about a 8% chance we make the playoffs.

But I also don't think we'll be in the bottom three in the NHL by the end of the season. My gut tells me to expect a finish between 20th and 26th in the league.

This isn't that serious of a thread. It's just about seeing if people are starting to believe we can actually be a decent team. If Colorado can be the best team in the NHL right now on the back of good goaltending, I don't see why we (a similar type of team) can't at least contend for a an eighth seeded playoff spot in a much weaker conference.

Man in the Box - November 3, 2009 04:45 AM (GMT)
hey lets give a guy a hard time about making a thread!!!

i was thinking the same thing today.. if we win today will i take this team more serious and devote more time watching games .?? the answer is yes... awful teams dont win 4 games in a row.. we have 5 ot losses.. with a few bounces or some alert players in the final 5 minutes of the game we coulda had 3 more wins at least... maybe the sun is rising for this team.. they have great goal tending so u never do know... im gunna hop on the bandwagon while we are winning!! lets go isles!!

timotime - November 3, 2009 04:47 AM (GMT)
No.

But I do believe that I'll enjoy watching the team play this year.

Maybe if we acquired some help on defense, I'd think sneaking into the playoffs was a legit possibility.

Craving_the_Cup_Since_1992 - November 3, 2009 05:19 AM (GMT)
Don't get situated in the cart before you even buy the horse. If the season ended tomorrow, I'd believe we were a playoff team, but unfortunately there are 5+ months left--not to mention an Olympic break.

Tinman31 - November 3, 2009 05:50 AM (GMT)
Does it always have to be extremes?

On a side note (My boy Snowman39 first pointed this out) it is un-real how many changes JT has MISSED for goals. NOW, to me that is a HUGE positive and complement. Inches here or there and this guys really would have 9 plus goals.

Finding the right spot, the "un-canny" ability to get those chances without big size or speed is what people said about him and it is dead right.

In a few years there is ZERO question he scores 35-45 goals. In his sleep. Especially by then think of what type of player KO will be. I won't go crazy on Moulson but JT, KO and a strong winger, WOW.

He is also a perfect guy for PP, for rebounds, goals off that little spot where he has hit the post several times. Probably go 50% on 5 on 3's too.

Look at Steven Stamkos.

If we win against Buffalo, I am going to Newark on friday night ...
anyone wants to join?

clebo99 - November 3, 2009 09:15 AM (GMT)
I'm here in London working and there must be some mistake with the local internet here because it's showing both the Islanders and Phoenix in the playoffs right now............

I'd also like to mention that our winning streak started with my "Glass Half Full" Thread. Maybe the kids just needed a little love and optimism.

I'm glad to see the team doing well but we have something like 9 out of the next 10 games on the road. If we go .500 after that stretch, then maybe I'll start thinking about playoffs.

But we are seeing progress.......

I really just worded the poll badly. I wanted to know if people are starting to believe, that's it. Obviously believing means playoffs, but playoffs are too far down the road. So try to just get what I'm saying.

Everyone knew what you meant even those of us who tease you.

Before the year started, I said this team on paper was a 13th to 15th team.
Best case scenario was finishing 10th in conference.

I still feel that way except when I've watched them the last 4 games.

But then when you factor in our guys being healthy, a couple of the teams weakened and playing through flu viruses and not hitting etc...
you realize over an 82 game season alot can happen.

So the obvious question now becomes, why can't it happen in a positive light for us???
As in 8th seed? Been there before. Seen it all. I still expect them to finish out of the playoffs
despite the recent min surge.

:dontknow:

Webb20 - November 3, 2009 04:08 PM (GMT)
You just don't know. What if this is just the beginning of this team's success. What if the balance we're enjoying IS this team? We make the playoffs. Stranger things have happened in sports.
