I am not surprised..Once the Cablevision/Newsday merger came I had a feeling that would happen..It was only a matter of time.

tsharaf - October 22, 2009 09:09 PM (GMT)
They just made themselves more irrelevant than they already are.

If I want to read about the Islanders, I just will have to skip Newsday altogether. The best places for Islander news are this site and IPB. No need for Newsday as afar as I can tell. Thats $.10 for every smiley.

IslandersWin86 - October 22, 2009 09:15 PM (GMT)
$20 a month? HA! They've got bigger balls than I. I could see $5...maybe.

Most sports subs per month are six to seven bucks a month. Newsday will find it won't find a market for this price.

God, I hate newsrag. Too bad suffolk life was never able to expand and challenge their supremacy.

Webb20 - October 23, 2009 01:05 PM (GMT)
Yep, too bad. I'd welcome another a Long Island daily paper.

stevedepot - October 23, 2009 01:33 PM (GMT)
Aren't we "paying" enough each time we choose to read some of that drivel in the first place?

Makes no sense, even in these times. It's like like they HAVE a product worthy of a fee.

I'd take ISLES FILES off as a link to this site.
F her, F NEWSDAY and F Dolan. If every Islander fan banded together with this, maybe the team would give EXCLUSIVE first hand leaks to more worthy writers who cover our team.

The subscription service started today. I'd be interested to find out how many people drop them (like me) now that they are charging $5 a week.

The new "enhanced" site sucks.

Yesterday I received this email:

Dear Newsday Subscriber,

Starting Wednesday, your Newsday subscription will be even more valuable. Beginning October 28, we will provide newsday.com as an exclusive benefit for Newsday home delivery and Optimum Online customers at no additional charge.

Approximately 75 percent of Long Island households are already Newsday home delivery and/or Optimum Online customers and will enjoy unlimited access to newsday.com, as will all of Cablevision's Optimum Online customers throughout the New York area, which total 2.5 million households. This exciting change with newsday.com is only possible because of our being a part of the Cablevision family, and is an important reflection of our continuing efforts to provide exclusive benefits, more value and better services for our customers.

Over the past few months, you may have noticed that newsday.com began a transformation to become a more dynamic, multimedia resource. We will continue to add features designed to provide you a more useful, personalized experience that makes newsday.com an even greater resource for you to get the information you want and need at anytime.

If you haven’t yet seen the new, better-than-ever newsday.com, we hope you will visit soon.

Sincerely,

Terry Jimenez

Here’s how it will work:

We are beginning the online registration process today, which will allow you to take immediate advantage of many new features at newsday.com.

On October 28, when the transition is complete, if you are an Optimum Online customer, you will have seamless and automatic access to newsday.com when using your Optimum Online connection.  However, to access the site when you are away from home, Optimum Online customers will need to complete the simple, one-time registration.

For Newsday home delivery subscribers, who are not also Optimum Online subscribers, you will be prompted to complete the same registration, enabling you to access newsday.com.

If you are not yet a Newsday home delivery or Optimum Online customer, you can sign up for either service, or you can enjoy unlimited access to newsday.com for $5.00 per week, which amounts to an approximately $20.00 a month value.

Everyone will have access to limited content on newsday.com, including the homepage, classified listings, weather, movies, stocks, obituaries, school closings and community programs.

Check out some of newsday.com’s new features:

-  “News Near You,” a zip code driven news feature that helps you get information specific to your hometown

-    “My News,” a customizable Web page you create to scan up-to-the-minute news on the topics, teams and themes you care about most

-  Content-specific newsletters and alerts delivered from newsday.com via email or SMS/text to your mobile device, giving you the information you want in the format you choose

-  Detailed search options on exploreLI.com for finding just the right event, restaurant or venue based on price, genre, ambiance and more

- A state-of-the-art high definition player for viewing a broad assortment of sports, entertainment, local news and other videos

Please do not reply to this email as we are not able to respond to messages sent to this address.  If you have any questions about accessing the site, we’ve set up a special help line for you to call: 877-LI LIVE IT (877-545-4834) or email us at help@newsday.com.

Mr. Jiminez,

With all due respect.
I’ve been a NEWDAY subscriber since my wife and I built our home in Suffolk some 16 years ago.
The new, “ENHANCED” site is slow, underwhelming and poorly designed.

As someone in Advertising and Design for over 21 years, I question the background color for the site.
Was there no research done or does anyone not realize that dark colors tend to be depressing
while VIBRANT colors are more inviting?

The biggest insult is the fact that you’re now charging for this debacle?
Forgive me for not succumbing to the jubilation your marketing department expected
When they decided to release this new FEE based site that us subscribers can enjoy for free.
It’s just not worth it, even FREE. Yes it’s THAT bad.

I will keep my printed subscription for now but this site is one that will not be bookmarked
as I find it to be insulting to every consumers intelligence.

Good for you, SD!

I couldn't agree with you more. The old site with Logan was much better. His blogs used to be lengthy pieces of information. Now, to get that level of information, you have to go to IPB. Way to drive folks from your site, Newsday! :bag:

TRUST me. It's awful. Newsday has reinvented fecal matter and digitized it

My twitter says she confirmed he does.

"A team source confirmed to me that Doug Weight did have Swine Flu"

"Weight was kept isolated from the team in case of the possibility, and apparently the Islanders receirved confirmation yesterday he had it"

"He has been subsequently treated though and is not contagious. He'll play tonight after missing the past three games." ;) Strang

Botta confirmed on his Twitter also.

Doug Weight is back on the ice this morning after missing three straight games with the flu. I talked to him briefly before the morning skate and he said he's feeling better. So thankfully, there's no Swine Flu scare on the Island  ;)

Weight is playing the right wing with Jeff Tambellini and Josh Bailey.

They're kidding, right? If you go to Newsday.com and want to read an atricle about the Islanders they ask you to log in. It is free to newsday and Optimum online subscribers. Anybody else has to pay.

Unless I'm missing something???

That's how it works.

It'll ask you to log in if you're not on an Optimum Online connection...unless it figured out some kind of way to just know you're a customer.

sybo - October 30, 2009 08:41 PM (GMT)
works fine today...for free...no log-in required.
