What a crappy organEYEzation we have with the Islanders. Wanting to help the community.... asinine.
Shooter - October 20, 2009 09:35 PM (GMT)
What's wrong with this? Why the sarcastic thread Led? Kudos to the Islanders.
Webb20 - October 20, 2009 09:47 PM (GMT)
This is what pro athletes should do. Be role models and mentors. Kids sure respect and will listen to JT before they listen to their parents.
And recruiting Islander fans of the future is good too.
Jackace - October 20, 2009 10:04 PM (GMT)
It fits in with his seasonal breakdown of the team since inception. Since Trottier didn't read to kids in the 80s it is further proof that this team is doomed for failure.
Its amazing that us babies have the tutelage of a Zep. We are all better-off with his wisdom.

Because the Isles can't do anything right according to him. If the Isles cured global warming he's complain that his drink is too cold.
Community outreach is always a good thing. I understand some of Zeps complaint about the org on the ice and management, but a reading program :dontknow:
LEDZEP - October 20, 2009 10:57 PM (GMT)
Personally I think it is sweet that they can read AND play hockey,
Especially for the younger kids and the babies :torrey:
3POTI - October 20, 2009 11:22 PM (GMT)
Zep, are you just implying that the Islanders can read to kids, but they can't read a hockey system?

Careful! Do you really want a Zep explanation this question? The universe may implode. But us babies would never know it until Zep let us know via hieroglyphics.

I think what he/she/it/Led's going for is the fact that we're such a young team, that our players may not be old enough to read. It's also looking at the angle that many of us have been, at times, impressed with the play of our younger guys, because they have made small strides. It thinks that we should not give players praise until they score 50 goals in a season. It is mocking the idea of positive reinforcement.

FIRST OFF I WONT TOLERATE ANYONE CALLING LED A HE/SHE/IT PERIOD.
YOU DONT WANT TO AGREE WITH HIM FINE BUT LIKE YOU HE IS HIS OWN MAN
MY SPIN ON IT IS ITS FUNNY WEIGHT AND JT HELPING KIDS READ
HELL THEY COULD PROBABLY DO THE SAME IN THE LOCKER ROOM SINCE THEY'RE ALL SO YOUNG....
Craving_the_Cup_Since_1992 - October 21, 2009 12:55 AM (GMT)
Where are the implications that Wang is only having the Islanders read to kids in some kind of land-grab or baby-grab? He's making them drink the kool aid!
I still don't get it.
7th Woman - October 21, 2009 01:27 AM (GMT)
Well, I can tell you the 350 kids at the West Islip school that Bergie, Park and Schremp visited all had a great time and were excited to have them there.
How many other times do young kids get to see professional athletes that close in THEIR own school? Not often.
No one wants to hear about the NHL's charity initiatives? fine. Don't discuss them, but don't make fun of them. This league and this team do alot.
LEDZEP - October 21, 2009 01:56 AM (GMT)
The Led feels that the original title may have led (get it)
to the confusion of the hidden meaning within the original post.
"Isn't it sweet that they can read AND play hockey?" :letssee:
The Led will now come up with the infamous revision of
the new an improved 2nd title called, :o
"Islanders Tavares, Weight read to young students"
By MARK HERRMANN

Note To Self:
Talking in the 3rd party should not be done to often
as well as taking the original title of this thread very seriously.
It always boils down to, what to leave in and what to leave out :stoned:

I just didn't know what he/she/it is. I think to assume it's a man is a little sexist, as nothing has been stated otherwise. Still don't know.

Unfortunately winning aint one of them.

I don't see anything about the title to imply that LED is doing anything but giving us a story. There is no underlying message with LED. If it's one thing you know is his opinions, you never have to decipher them.
Watch it LED, next your post 'Carolina vs Islanders' will be misconstrued as some sort of toxic rant against the team.

Better to teach the kids how to read than play Overspeed.
THAT would mean Child Services gets involved.

you are sick. Love it.
On a serious note. I have no problem with the team doing this.
They need to cultivate new fans but with the way things are going now, it's more about trying to keep the ones they have.

i remember when i was a wee lil polish lad and Kasparaitis came to my school. i think it was to talk about drugs, or something. i don't remember. what i DO remember, though, was a bunch of us playing a 5 minute game of hockey with him in our gym. kind of awesome.

If Gordon is the one cultivating fans (or even worse, Gimp Dey!), we'll have a bunch of kids so upset, they won't ever want to see a hockey game again.
"Timmy? Just don't blame the phonics!"

Not quite sure what this entire thread is about, so if I'm off base, I'll apologize in advance.
I think it is a wonderful thing that this organization gives back to the community. The promo ads that run during games with Freddy Meyer and Tamby at the hospital "making the day" of kids with cancer? Makes me thank my lucky stars my kids are healthy. Same goes for the "Witters Hitters" spot. Good for him, he does NOT have to give back, but he CHOOSES to.
For a pro athlete to take the time and make a difference says a lot about the PERSON to me.
I live in Jersey and the Devils do very little, if anything, to give back. Been at a couple of functions and they appear bored and can't wait for it to be over. In their defense, I don't go often so it may have only been the ones I went to. The Islanders in that amusement park? They were having a blast and looked like they were spending time with our fans.
Bottom line- I'm proud to be a part of this organization. For hockey obviously, but also for the caliber of person this team represents.

Some need to take a long vacation on an island so they can be miserable by themselves. And not Long Island! :yea:
