Potvin in shoot out competition

Pretty cool stuff

Thanks for that.
Brings back great memories.

Mike Palmateer was some goalie. Just shows you how slower the game was back then thanks to the equipment and skates.

Guess I'm no frills or just not a huge fan of the modern spectacle Bettmen and the NHL has become, but I just love that old school, down to the basics mentality. I still love the "sport" of hockey. I still love going to the coliseum to see the Islanders, but the "spectacle", everything you have to deal with just to actually see the hockey game has got to go. The hockey being played is the entertainment!

No wonder there were 10 50+ goal scorers a year. Those pads were small, stand up styles of goaltending yielded alot of open net.

That was during all-star weekend. Beck was traded to Rags but wore the Rockies jersey.

I was comically thinking to myself, "shoot the puck Barry" when he came down on first shot.
What a clown that guy was.
Remember Flatley's clean hit that skunked Bubba's shoulder?
No more mid-hiccup "shoot the puck BARRY" yelps from a drunken Bill "big whistle" Chadwick.

The good ole days. When the boards were WHITE with NO ads. The "game experience" was JUST the beauty of the game itself with no ice dancers, ice girls, GOAL SONG twiddlings or high pitched arena hostess tart circling the stands making incoherent announcements on a jumbotron. You went for the hockey. Period.

You put that just right, stevedepot.

Remember the days when you didn't need to be told: Hey NY Islander fans, here comes your NY Islanders!!!!. It's like thanks for the heads up announcer

Great find---thanks! Terrific to see Potvin circa 1980. One wonders if he didn't shoot in close on Palmateer because it wasn't a game situation. After all, Potvin practiced a lot with a goalie who punched players who took slapshots in practice.

Funny to see Palmateer playing against a guy, Picard, in a Caps uniform. Palmateer wound up being traded to DC and quit on the Caps big time. He got Gary Green fired.

PS I recall Showdowns were recorded during the offseason and shown throughout the HNIC season. Often you'd see players with different haircuts, scars, team jerseys, etc. since the footage was a little dated. I liked the two-on-two games best. Most of the Skills Competition events that debuted in Pittsburgh in 1990 were taken directly from Showdown.
