Fans in knife fight after Flyers bus trip

It wasn't Broad Street, but hockey bullies were out in force on Saturday night in a strange, blood-soaked brawl.

In the bizarre incident, two Flyers fans who took a bus trip to see their team play in New Jersey were critically stabbed by other Flyers fans who were awaiting the bus' return at a bowling alley in Northeast Philadelphia, police said.

On the way back from the game in Newark, in which the Flyers defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-2, one of the men on the bus called his brother, an off-duty police officer from the 18th District, and told him that there might be trouble when the bus got back in the city, according to Northeast Detectives.

It is unclear why some of the occupants of the fan bus expected trouble upon their return, but according to police, when the off-duty cop showed up at the bus' final destination, at the Arena Bowling Alley on Roosevelt Boulevard near Rhawn Street, he saw a group of 10 to 15 men waiting for it to arrive.

When the bus pulled up shortly after midnight, three to four of the men who were waiting attempted to board the bus, police said.

The off-duty officer got out of his vehicle and, as he did so, the men trying to get on the bus instead ran towards him and began kicking and punching the officer, Northeast Detectives said.

After verbally identifying himself as a police officer, the off-duty cop grabbed a hold of one of the men and held him against his car while the others continued to beat the officer, police said.

Meanwhile, the cop's brother and the other fans got off the bus and engaged in a verbal dispute with the opposing group, according to police.

During the course of the argument, the cop's 28-year-old brother was stabbed once in the chest and once in the back by a man in a Flyers' jersey, Northeast Detectives said.

Another occupant of the bus, a 26-year-old man, was stabbed once in the back by a different assailant who also wore a Flyers jersey, this one with ripped sleeves, police said.

Both men were rushed to Aria Health's Torresdale campus, where they remained in critical condition yesterday.

Aside from a cut over his left eye, the off-duty officer escaped with minor injuries, police said.

The only arrest made so far in the case is the man that the off-duty cop was able to hold down while he was being beaten, Northeast Detectives said.

Police have not released the names of the victims, the off-duty officer involved or the arrested individual.

A fan who was on the bus and posted his experiences on the local sports blog, The 700 Level, said he didn't know why there was a "big brawl" between the two factions of Flyers fans, but assumed it may have had something to do with all-day drinking. He recounted what he saw:

"Anyway, some guy comes walking by with his buddy screaming, 'Call an ambulance!'" he wrote. "He had been stabbed and his intestines were literally hanging out! There was blood everywhere."

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call Northeast Detectives at 215-686-3153.

I always love to see the obligator Isle/Rag fan fight at games, but this is way overboard. It's no wonder the Pronger got such a big welcome in Philly--he uses his skate, not a knife.

Flyers fans are the absolute worst. At least with Rag fans you can laugh at them.

Webb20 - October 5, 2009 07:57 PM (GMT)
And their women are the ugliest in the league(the complete opposite of Habs lady fans).

When we got back to the The Arena bowling alley in the Northeast, there were cop cars everywhere and a big brawl taking place. These were all Flyers fans fighting. I don't know why. I guess drinking all day had something to do with it? Anyway, some guy comes walking by with his buddy screaming, "Call an ambulance!" He had been stabbed and his intestines were literally hanging out! There was blood everywhere. We were just a little freaked out and didn't want to be stabbed so we left.

Video has been taking down but it was interesting.

I went to an Isles/Flyers game about 2-3 years ago. Had great, great seats (about 6 rows off the ice near the faceoff circle. Didn't have the balls to wear the Isles jersey so I wore my Team Canada with #22. Didn't have too much trouble until I called then Flyer Ben Eager an F'n Hairy P&*%y. Guy next to me gave me a look like I should start writing out my will. Got out of there alive...barely..

Isn't it pathetic that that's where our country originated?

Went to a Boston game and their fans were very pleasant. Not a negative word was said to me or my girl who also had an Isles jersey on. Kudos to them and I bought a puck to remember the night.

I wish I could say that same about some of our fans. Jackasses, lots of them.

Yep. Burning flags, etc. No good. I guess chalk it up to being the most disgruntled, insulted and abused fan base in hockey by a country mile. Still no excuse though.

Are we really the most disgruntled? If Flyer fans stabbed other Flyer fans after they won.... Montreal fans rioted after winning the Stanley Cup....

Are we surprised? There's no sense of sportsmanship in Philly.

Thinking about this, look at the way Pronger holds Kunitz (who is held by the ref) then tries to turn him around to pummel his face. Is that enforcer hockey or just pure goon? I'm surprised Pronger didn't start throwing punches while Kunitz had his back to him. Look at Richards who clearly threw himself into the goalie. Not to romanticize the past too much, but who punishes Richards for potentially injuring Fleury? In some sense, hockey has no sense of right or wrong. The whim of ref "justice" (which usually includes the refs holding a guy who is getting beat up) and "discipline."

I'm not a Flyer or Pens fan, though.

4CUPZ - October 9, 2009 04:59 PM (GMT)
I THOUGHT PRONGER WAS GOING TO SNAP THAT GUYS BACK

I flipped on the center ice feed last night and saw that.
the guy doing color called Hartnell "mophead".

old time hockey at it's finest, or worst.

Shooter - October 9, 2009 05:41 PM (GMT)
The two years the Flyers won the Cup in the 1970s were among the most embarrassing for the sport. They were thugs and the officials were too scared to police the sport properly.

4CUPZ - October 9, 2009 07:46 PM (GMT)
Due to a lack of evidence, Philadelphia Flyers winger Scott Hartnell will not face any supplementary discipline for an alleged biting incident in Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Glad it wasn't an Islander game. "Regardless of evidence for or against the Islander player will serve no shorter than a 60 game suspension because he obviously has a history of this sort of behavior."
