Anyone watch the Avs opener the other night? I was very impressed with Duchene. He looked like Crosby out there, but even more dynamic.

I said to myself, let me just see another game before I go making a thread on him. Right now I'm watching him again, and he looks even better, like a 5 year vet.

I'm not making the Tavares/Duchene comparisons here, I'm just giving you all a warning when Matt winds up with lots of points this season, because it is going to happen. I know the bitching will come if Tavares can't reach 40 points and Duchene gets 70

I was about to post almost exactly the same thing.

He's fantastic! Kind of reminded me of Pavel Bure's first game in the NHL and had 3 breakaways. Both players didn't score a goal, but you knew they were going to be great.

However, there will be no Tavares, Duchene, or even Hedman debates from me. I'm actually pulling for all 3 players to be stars as I think they're all good guys.

speaking of Hedman...how did he do his first game? does anyone know?

if anyone noticed, Tavares had a goal and assist in his first game, centering the No. 1 line.

Nobody did, because the guy that was booed at the draft party and the guy that nobody wanted skated well in his first NHL game, so it naturally means he's a superstar. People are unreal.

He played like 85 minutes that first game. Seriously, he's averaged over 25 minutes in his first 2 games. His first game he had an assist, but was a -2.

Before the draft one of the big plusses for Duchene was that he was the best skater in the draft. So the fact that he's lightning quick should be of surprise to no one.

To make comparisons at this point is nonsense and assinine.

But eventually, several years down the road, comparisons will and should be made. And only then will we really be able to tell if we got the better player.

for what it's worth, IMO, Duchene looked hesitant, almost tambellini like
in the first period his first game outside of one great one on one move just inside his own blueline.

picked it up the last 2 periods but overall, the Avs surprisingly thrived off the Sakic jersey
retirement ceremony and made San Jose look like a team that was one step behind.

Just one game, haven't seen him since. We have #91.
I think it's safe to say we're all fine with that, no?

I think we're all over-reacting a bit here--the few that are hopping on the Duchene bandwagon already and those that think all Isles fans are never happy. Those that may now prefer Duchene are in the minority, no doubt about it. And as far as Isles fans being happy? Well, we got a long way to go for happiness I'll say! I don't see any NYICers jumping ship, but we have plenty of quite legitimate gripes with the organization. The Tavares pick for most of us, isn't one of 'em.

Can't even imagine the outrage had we taken Duchene and the stats were the same for both those guys. As I said for months, this fanbase would have never survived that draft pick had they gone in that direction.
