I dunno if this has already been discussed, but I noticed there's a zoning hearing coming up soon for the lighthouse plans. As much as I want the plan to go through and for the Islanders to stay and for everyone to be happy, blah blah blah, I have to say for one, I REALLY hate the fact that Wang had to shoot for the stars with the mega-story buildings. To me, this is step one in making Long Island look like queens, which I have feared for a long time.

My question is, does anyone think that Wangster will be willing to scale it down if things don't go his way or is the choice going to be: 1) Keep the Islanders and make LI look like Queens or 2) lose the Islanders?

What do you all think?

Danny, all Lighthouse threads are confined to the Lighthouse forum. Check that out if you want to discuss all topics LH.

As a Queens native, I am turning the otherway on the "making LI look like Queens" statement.

Would I be wrong to assume, DannyBinAtlanta, that you no longer reside in Long Island? A resident of Atlanta perhaps? Why is that? Gave up on a futureless Long Island? I can't say I blame you.

I have worked on Long Island from 2002 - 2007 covering a territory from Freeport to Bohemia and let me give my take on what is happening to Long Island.

The crime rate in western Nassau is thru the roof and only getting worse. In fact, just drive west of the NVMC after a game one night and watch the decline of neighborhoods until you reach Jamaica Estates (Queens) when things begin to look up again. There's no decent paying jobs, save for a few utility companies and a hand full of mom and pops that may keep you employed until they grow annoyed with you. Stability? Where? I see no stability.

Long Islands slanted economy, offers nothing to the middle class.

Sadly, LI's middle class are drowning in debt. The Wealthy LI'ers are just fine. But ask your average Joe in Suffolk where his kids are going to work and he'll more than likely point west. And the cost for a train ticket in that direction increases as often as the insane tax hikes. But the Hamptons are nice!

So Little Joey cuts grass in the summer and shovels snow in the winter. And little Katie burns away middle class mommy and daddy's savings to go away to college and return to become a hair dresser at Lisa's Salon or a waitress at Ruby Tuesday's.

The politics around this lighthouse project and the propaganda.... who really - I mean REALLY cares?

If there were never a NY Islanders Hockey Team, would you care how the NVMC and surrounding wastelands were developed?

Wang wants his own little Wangs World. The Business owners in the surrounding towns fear the loss of paying customers to the Wang's Malls and Wangs Shops. The TOH believes this and gets their palms greased by that group and this.....

Look, all I want is to watch my favorite at hockey team. I'd like for that to continue to be at the NVMC. If not there, I am just fine with Brookly or Queens.
The Lighthouse is not going to save Long Island's future. Nor will it turn it into a dreaded "Queens". . Its just going to give the NYI a new play to call home, Wang an a$$load of real estate income and the average Joe of LI just another place to blow his cash. Another Blazing neon sign on Hempstead Trnpk.

Oh yeah, and a lot of little Joey's and Katie's can trade in their lawn mowers and Ruby Tuesday's aprons for a career in Wang's world. But hey - that's some nice taxed income for the county right?

Easy tiger, I didn't say "Queens is a giant crapheap" "I hate Queens" "I hate people from Queens." Or anything similar.

Nothing wrong with Queens, one of the five boroughs of New York City. Long Island is not a borough, therefore I simply do not want it to look like one, that is all. I'm not sure how you inferred all the other stuff. :dontknow:

I happen to agree with you on the cost of living, opportunities, etc on LI. Hopefully that will start to change during this economic downturn, we'll see.

As for me, yes I'm in Atlanta. My girlfriend lives here and I secured a job after I separated from the military in march. But I am trying to return to LI where the majority of my family still resides. I have my hat in the ring for numerous civil service agencies and as soon as one comes through I'll be back on LI or NYC. I only mention this so that you don't think I ran away from LI just to look back and comment on it from afar. I still consider myself a Long Islander and am always concerned for its future in all aspects.

Once the lighthouse developers know what the Town Of Hempstead will allow them to build, then the decision will be made as to what to do.

Stay and Just Build It, even if it means scaling it back.
Throwing their hands up and Finding a buyer for the team.
Throwing their middle finger up and just moving to another city in the tri-state
Or thowing up a BIG FU New York and finding an out of state suitor.

Charles Wang's patience is about to run out. He was asked to come up with something that would benefit Nassau County. He came up with a huge dream. Let's see how much of the dream Kate Murray and the Town of Hempstead wants to make reality....
if any.

So why again can't we go the route of everyone else (Jets/Giants, Mets, Yankees, Cowboys...missing anyone?) and just build another one in the parking lot?

The TOH wants to ensure that Wang (65) will not sell off the project half assed and keep the Isles here by trying to get Wang to agree to rebuild the Coli first.

He's 65, the entire project will take at least 10 years...think Charles will be around for all of that?
Think about it.

I can seriously see him selling this off after 2-4 years or whenever the forecast for revenue from project might be at it's highest. For now, he's the owner. Unfortunately.

Good point Steve I hadn't considered that very plain fact. Interesting. I guess this is where "benefit of the doubt" should come in?

Truth be told, all I want (IF ANYTHING) is some refurbishments to the arena to satisfy the majority. Other than that, I could easily do without a box store mini-city in Nassau.

It seems like they pump up all these meetings, and regardless of who shows up and what it's about, nothing changes. Wake me up when we have an answer.

I got news for you bud, Long Island and especially Nassau County is already starting to look like Queens. This project can only help the area. Go down Hempstead Turnpike passed Hofsta and tell me we don't need this project to happen.

Well hopefully the papers will have some wrapup I can read tomorrow about the meeting. I'm just curious at this point. I can't get amped up by either side anymore.

Dark, I know Hempstead's hurtin. I was down there briefly over the summer to take an exam. Change is needed, but what kind is of course the question. I'd rather this project not "overdo it" if avoidable. I know I know here it comes...! :bag:

that would make for a pretty short-lived retirement after you run through your entire savings the 1st week :yea:

Knowing it's entertainment and money management, and of course knowing the odds of every bet you make is key. ;)
