Pertaining to the fact that Kessel is still unsigned by Boston and the nhl rumor mill has had the Leafs ready to give an offersheet to the RFA.
| QUOTE |
An animated Brian Burke discussed the rumours with reporters Tuesday at the team's training facilities in Toronto.
"I do not contemplate an offer sheet to Phil Kessel at this time," Burke told reporters.
Burke was notably furious with then Oilers' general manager Kevin Lowe for signing Dustin Penner to an offer sheet in the Summer of 2007 when Burke was GM of the Anaheim Ducks. Burke wanted to make it clear that he believes the situations are completely different.
"My objection was that I got blindsided by it at a time I thought was inappropriate," Burke stated. "This entire process has involved dialogue with (Bruins GM) Peter Chiarelli. I told him about reacquiring the pick, telling him the night before I got the pick that I intended to get the pick back. There has been no blindside or back door like Kevin Lowe did."
Burke also made it clear that he does not in fact object to the notion of the offer sheet which some have suggested.
"They are part of the CBA (collective bargaining agreement)," Burke stated. "And the team utilizes that tool to get better. It's not an issue to me and it wasn't an issue to me. So on that basis I don't believe that they are parallel circumstances at all." |
Burke has just required the Leafs 2010 2nd round pick, so now the Leafs have their 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks for this coming draft, which they would have to give up if they sign Kessel to a deal of $3,923,437 - $5,231,249. Kessel is said to be asking Boston for a 4-5 mill per deal, which would cost the Leafs those 3 picks.
Here are my questions to Brian Burke...
1- If you aren't getting ready to offer a sheet, why re-acquired the Leafs 2010 second-round draft pick from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Toronto's third-round pick in 2011 and a 2011 second-round pick that was previously acquired by Toronto from Calgary. Why give up a 2nd and third round pick to get back your second when you have no idea where in the round those picks will come. It looks to me like you are getting ready to do an offer sheet.
2- How can you claim the Penner offer sheet by Kevin Lowe "blindsided" you? It had been the talk of the nhl media for two months. Two players were talked about that spring as possible offer sheet candidates as RFAs...Penner and Vanek. Yet Buffalo wasn't caught sleeping. Are you really trying to claim Lowe "blindsided you" because he didn't call you? And now Burke is claiming he isn't blindsiding Boston because he called their GM to let them know they were reacquiring their second round pick?
Burke is so full of bunk. His claims that it "is different" than what happened with him and Lowe is so much crap. He was flipping out about offer sheets, not being blind sided a few years back. Now that he's prepared to do it, "its different". Just fess up to what it is Burke. You said you got blinded several years back. So you apparently weren't paying attention to your job when you lost Penner.

Remember when Burke grandstanded about bring Tavares to Toronto? Burke is the king douche of hockey. For all of Snow's faults, if we had Burke as our GM, I'd have no respect for myself as a fan. Burke is projecting when it comes to Lowe. I blame Lowe for jeopardizing the lost season with his ridiculous offer sheets for unproven talent, but he was doing the dirty just as Burke does.

Now that Dany Heatley, mercifully, has been moved, the focus in the hockey world shifts to Phil Kessel.
And he may not be a Boston Bruin for much longer.
Two sources told ESPN.com Saturday afternoon that Kessel may find a new home soon enough, perhaps in a matter of days, and that the Toronto Maple Leafs are very much the lead dog in the pursuit of the 21-year-old winger.
The Nashville Predators are also believed to be among other clubs interested in Kessel, but clearly Toronto was in the lead Saturday.
One source told ESPN.com the Leafs have offered two first-round picks and a second-round pick as part of the deal.
Another source said if a deal can't be reached soon between Toronto and Boston that the Leafs were seriously considering an offer sheet. The Bruins, of course, could match.
Kessel, a restricted free agent, has been unable to reach terms this summer with the Bruins, and it's been clear the 36-goal scorer would be moved for the right deal by the cap-limited Bruins.
Leafs GM Brian Burke hasn't hid his desire to acquire Kessel, the kind of young offensive force the Leafs are starving for in the midst of their re-tooling.
Burke has improved his goaltending and assembled one of the Eastern Conference's deepest blue-line corps, but there's a scarcity of offense up front.
Burke first tried to acquire Kessel at the NHL draft in Montreal in June but the deal, involving Toronto defenseman Tomas Kaberle, fell through.
Because the Bruins signed free-agent puck-moving defenseman Derek Morris in the offseason they no longer covet Kaberle.
Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com.

Canucks pursuing tampering charge against LeafsLooks like Brian Burke's proclamations about what the Leafs will get over the summer are getting him in hot water. It's funny how Burke stopped at nothing to give off the appearance that the Leafs were in anyway involved with one of the top three at the draft.

Should have seen the look on his face during that 2-1 loss to Ottawa last night.
Komisarek has struggled mightily with the Leafs thus far.
Still early.
Can you imagine. You get the players you want (except tavares of course).
But you start the season off stinking AND with tampering charges looming???

I loved watching his face when the top three were picked AND Braydon Schenn went to someone else. Hahahaha, F U Burke!
League imposes a fine on the Leafs for Burke's comments about acquiring the Sedin twins (another failed promise?!).
Eat it, Burke!
