Title: Bastille and The 'Yotes

clebo99 - August 25, 2009 02:52 PM (GMT)
Now Bastille has put in a bid to move the team with or without NHL consent. This is just going to get worse and worse. I wonder if "the perfect storm" is coming that Bastille wins, moves the team but no NHL team goes to Hamilton and plays. The NHLPA gets involved and before we know it, the season could be in jeopardy with court injunctions and such.

Balsillie won't take the team if he's stuck with resolving the Glendale lease. In other words, he could win the bankruptcy auction but would then have to settle the lease, which would really make the whole business rather costly.

BTW, the Coyotes have better attendance than the Islanders ... both in absolute numbers and in terms of percentage of seats sold.

The Ice Edge offer (which would have called for the Coyotes to play five games in ... Saskatoon!) is gone. Balsillie's tinkering with his offer in an effort to address Glendale's objections to losing the tenant to its arena.

Duel in the Desert ... tune in on Thursday. Balsillie versus Bettman.

I saw something on ESPN before about some major stockholder in the Preds getting 8 years in jail. Anyone know anything?

Why is that a surprise? It's the only place residents could get near a sheet of ice and stay cool.

Today Judge Baum held an emergency hearing to hear arguments on a proposal by Jerry Moyes to send this whole mess to arbitration. The hearing was noteworthy because of the efforts of Balsillie to do whatever it took to gain some traction, with the NHL standing firm against his bid.

As usual, the judge, who has a propensity for this sort of thing by now, refused to issue a ruling.

Moyes apparently has conceded that the team plays in Arizona this coming season.

Too bad.

Janet Gretzky had 5-1 odds they'd play in Hamilton.

Well, I can suggest that Janet's a big loser anyway ... I don't see how Wayne continues as coach.

And Wayne Gretzky still has not reported to camp.

At least we can say things are more dire elsewhere than on LI.

You forget ... Don Maloney IS the GM for the Coyotes.

Last year they put a lot of stock in Kyle Turris and Viktor Tikhonov. Both guys were sent down this year.

Wow, I'm so glad the Islanders are the laughing stock of league, right? I think Balsillie's going to win. He said yesterday that he'd promise to keep the Yotes in Glendale for at least the next season. Bettman, you're experiment failed!

Ah, so the reason the Coyotes exist is for you to say, "At least we're not Mississippi!"

Interesting.

Isles72 - September 27, 2009 03:00 PM (GMT)
I feel kinda bad for the judge .

I'm sure he felt as though some type of compromise could be made between both parties (nhl/coyotes)so he could wash his hands of it all by now.

JUDGE REJECTS BOTH BIDS

After months of back-and-forth disputes over who would ultimately obtain control of the Phoenix Coyotes franchise, Judge Redfield T. Baum turned down both bids by the National Hockey League and Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie on Wednesday.

"In hockey parlance, the court is passing the puck to the NHL, who can decide to take another shot at the sale net or it can pass off the puck," Judge Baum wrote on Wednesday.

Judge Baum threw out the bid by Balsillie, saying it could not work because he could not properly satisfy the NHL's rights regarding relocation. "In the final analysis, the court cannot find or conclude that the interests of the NHL can be adequately protected if the Coyotes are moved to Hamilton without first having a final decision regarding the claimed rights of the NHL and the claims of the debtors and (Balsillie)," he ruled.

He then ruled that the NHL's bid would not work because it allows the league to specifically select the creditors will be paid. The NHL said it would pay all their creditors in full - with the exception of former head coach Wayne Gretzky and majority owner Jerry Moyes.

While no resolution had determined, in June, Judge Baum stated that the NHL had a right to demand payment for a team moving into the territory of Southern Ontario.

Baum had threatened this ruling, and it really strikes at Balsillie. Now the league can seek an owner without worrying about Mr. Blackberry.

Craving_the_Cup_Since_1992 - September 30, 2009 11:28 PM (GMT)
Interesting ruling. If the NHL cannot find an owner, do they look worse for letting the Coyotes fold?

I think if I were the players union I would be watching this very closely to see how this financial issue effects the cap.
